“Thoughts range from the philosophical to the finer points of interpretative detail that make key viewing for pianists” BBC Music Magazine, October 2011 ***

“Best of all is the third lecture (DVD 2, one hour 18 mins), "Light and shade of interpretation", which at least uses the visual medium by projecting scores. The illustrations range from (uncredited) orchestral recordings of Wagner and Schubert to a few bars from Handel's Hercules sung by the endearingly eccentric lecturer” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011

“Thoughtful, confident and completely engrossing” Los Angeles Times

“One of the few films about classical music shown in cinemas that's worth seeing” Evening Standard

“A treasure trove for fans of the legendary Canadian pianist” Daily Telegraph ****

“Thoroughly pleasurable. A work of art in its own right” Washington Post

“Altogether, this portrait reverentially demythologises a man whose recordings and musical example remain provocative, inspiring and utterly unique. The bonus 'extras' recycle some film footage but add rewarding information.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2011 *****

““Genius Within” is a tour de force of archival research and dogged interviewing, and the portrait it presents is remarkably complete...It presents strong evidence that he was not just a gifted instrumentalist but also a hands-on cultural thinker” New York Times, 10th September 2010

“Impeccable documentary about the idiosyncratic pianist, constructed from a wealth of archive footage, radio recordings and new interviews with friends and colleagues.” The Independent on Sunday, 23rd January 2011

“Has Bach ever sounded so liquid? The black-and-white scenes of the young, affable Gould arriving in New York in the early 1950s are fascinating, and poignant” The Independent, 21st January 2011 ****

“a documentary packed with fact, verified folklore and faces of former friends and family, subpoenaed to bear witness in interview. The archive footage alone is irresistible” Financial Times, 21st January 2011

“What else is there to know about this pianist? Well, quite a lot, as this expertly paced, industriously sourced and artfully edited portrait reveals. It includes much footage that has never been seen before, relying on numerous talking heads and Gould himself to provide the narrative. It also delves into at least one area of his mysterious private life of which most of his global army of fans will have been unaware.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2011

Celtic Thunder’s “The Show”, was shot in the Helix Theater in Dublin, Ireland and was created and produced by Celtic Woman creator, Sharon Browne for broadcast on the PBS television network in the USA. Celtic Thunder - The Show immediately captured the imagination of television audiences. In The Show, five soloists, George Donaldson, Ryan Kelly, Paul Byrom, Keith Harkin and Damian McGinty perform an eclectic mix of numbers ranging from traditional Irish tunes such as “Come By the Hills” and “Mountains of Mourne” to international and contemporary hits such as “Brother in Arms” and “Desperado”, as well as original compositions for the show by Celtic Thunder’s legendary musical director and composer Phil Coulter. The ensemble songs reflect the power of the soloists, who range in age from 14 to 40 and share a common Celtic heritage. When “The Show” was released on Decca Music in the US the CD which featured 15 tracks from the original show, entered the Billboard World Music Charts at #1 and remained in the top 5 for over 44 weeks.

A student of Darius Milhaud and Luciano Berio, musician Steve Reich (born 1936) quickly developed a style all his own inspired by Baroque music, Bartók, Webern and Stravinsky, as well as jazz, traditional music (especially African), and Hebrew cantillation. As a trailblazing exponent of minimalist music, Reich rejected the characteristic complexity of mid-20th-century classical harmony and tonality in order to make large-scale works from minimal materials a single chord, a brief musical motif, a spoken exclamation – thereby reconciling sacred and popular music.

In this profile he looks back on the key stages of his 40-years lasting career, from the formation of his own group, Steve Reich and Musicians, to the American avant-garde he helped to create, from new video performances to his quasi-religious music. Despite his success and wide recognition Steve Reich has never renounced his independent spirit.

This film is about the artist and his music. From the analogue tapes of his first recorded pieces to current technology of sampling and video. We see him at work and clips from his performances and concerts in Le Havre, Tokyo, Rome, New York and Manchester.

Bonus: "Talks in Tokyo with Steve Reich" (18 min.) & "A brief History of Music by Steve Reich" (9 min.)

A Different Way: Tango with Rodolfo Mederos

A Different Way: Tango with Rodolfo Mederos

A film by Gabriel Szollosy & Bonus: Documentary Domingueando.

Rodolfo Mederos (bandoneon)

Recorded in Buenos Aires, May 2007

Rodolfo Mederos is a bandoneonist, a composer with an enormous oeuvre, one of the authorities on the tango – and an inspiration to new generations of musicians. The artist thrives on his city, floating above Buenos Aires like an angel, his playing captures the essence of a gigantic metropolis that never sleeps and only finds moments of rest in Rodolfo’s music. His tunes are an inseparable part of the city and reflect its modernism and intensity.

Mederos is a child of the modern age, yet constantly aware of his roots. Hundreds of tourists come to Buenos Aires to explore the tango – a genre that has long spread all over the world. Rodolfo is now 65 and at the prime of his career. His struggle for the tango – the lonely campaign of a man and his bandoneon – continues. The future remains uncertain; the only road open is straight ahead. The audience – today’s and tomorrow’s – is already waiting.
