Bach, J S: The Art of Fugue, BWV1080

Bach, J S: The Art of Fugue, BWV1080

This intriguing work introduces the notes B A C H in the last movement. Sadly, this recording in 2007 brought the work of this legendary ensemble to a close. The recording was made in a light, modern building and Bach’s timeless music enters into a two-way dialogue with a fascinating light and shadow effect by day and night. Every movement has an optically individual image.

“you might think...that a performance of Bach's work would not make for the best viewing on video. Yet being able to see a performance can heighten the musical experience - as here, where the players' gestures often clarify the music's structure and texture...In turn, sheer contrapuntal wizardry begins to spill over from cerebral into emotional appreciation.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2011 *****

Schubert: Piano Trios Nos. 1 & 2

Schubert: Piano Trios Nos. 1 & 2

Signet Library, Edinburgh 21 November 1978 & 13 December 1987

Schubert:

Piano Trio No. 1 in B flat major, D898

Piano Trio No. 2 in E flat major, D929

Beaux Arts Trio: Menahem Pressler (piano), Isidore Cohen (violin) & Bernard Greenhouse (cello)

The filming of the B flat Trio was one of the Beaux Arts Trio’s last activities with Bernard Greenhouse who retired shortly afterwards. Both performances here are deeply expressive, with unexpected shadows in the sunny B flat Trio, revealing hidden depths to Schubert’s work.

The Trio has won many distinguished awards for its recordings, including the Prix Mondial du Disque, three Grand Prix du Disque, the Union de la Presse Musicale Belge Caecilia Award, the Gramophone Record of the Year, and the Stereo Review Record of the Year Award.

“I haven’t heard such playing since Cortot, Thibaud and Casals” – the distinguished French conductor, Charles Munch, on the original Trio following their first concert.

Both concerts are beautifully filmed in Edinburgh’s elegant Signet Library.

The 90 minute film is presented by Renée Fleming herself, as she takes the viewer on a journey through the principal sights and musical history of ‘The Venice of the North’.

All repertoire was performed by special permission in the opulent theatres of the Winter Palace, the Yusopov Palace and the magnificent palace of Peterhof.
