Carnival and Scenes of Childhood

Music by Schumann

The Places

The tour takes us first to the carnival celebrations in Basel, with its elaborate displays. There follows a visit to Vigeland Park in Oslo, with its characteristic figures, the work of Gustav Vigeland.

The Music

The music chosen for this tour is by Schumann. His Carnaval accompanies the carnival in Basel, flowers in the countryside are depicted in Blumenstück and the granite figures in Vigeland Park, in Oslo, are matched with Scenes of Childhood.

Les Solistes de Lyon, Bernard Tétu

Charles Ferdinand Ramuz wrote 'Souvenirs sur Igor Stravinsky' several years after collaborating with the composer on his ballet 'Les Noces' in Switzerland in 1916.

Today, on the shores of Lake Geneva, two women, an actress and a conductor, meet to rehearse the piece. Drawing on Ramuz’s reminiscences of that unique collaboration and on the work of two artists grappling with a masterpiece of modern music today, 'Weddings' (Noces) speaks of the strength of musical friendship.

“The camera lingers revealingly on close-ups of his neat hands, showing how flat the fingers are, and how relaxed their action, and underscoring the fact that through his finely-judged rubato he exercises total authority over tempo. The cadenza has lovely delicacy...But the principal memory one comes away with is his engagingly child-like presence.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ****
