Mitsuko Uchida: Mozart in Japan

Mitsuko Uchida: Mozart in Japan

‘Mozart in Japan’ is Tony Palmer’s film of the triumphant return of the Japanese pianist Mitsuko Uchida to her homeland in 1986, following her ecstatically received European performances of all 27 Mozart Piano Concertos.

In 1986 Mitsuko Uchida burst upon the international scene with an astonishing series of concerts comprising all 27 Mozart Piano Concertos. Conducting the English Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard, her performances received universal praise. Music Week wrote that she had "brought a new understanding to Mozart"; The Guardian said that her "apparently unfussy approach to the most elusive of composers disguised a profound understanding."

Tony Palmer went with her on her triumphant return to her homeland. East met West on a truly memorable occasion to make a prize-winning film, now released on DVD for the first time.

Zarebski: Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 34

Zarebski: Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 34

Martha Argerich (piano), Bartłomiej Nizioł (violin I) Agata Szymczewska (violin II) Lyda Chen (viola) Alexander Neustroev (cello)

This is a DVD of the special chamber concert of the 7th International Music Festival ‘Chopin and his Europe’ , performed at the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall in August 2011.

The principle aim of the Chopin and his Europe festival is to seek Chopin’s influence and celebrate this in the musical culture of Poland and Europe, and to present these works.

The Quintet in G Minor by Juliusz Zarebeski, his Op. 34, is a work to be celebrated in this context. He was all but forgotten as a composer throughout the twentieth century, but rediscovered in the twenty-first and the delight in his work seems to be justified judging by this Quintet.

He was born in 1854, a gifted pianist, and went onto study at the Vienna Conservatoire, ending up in Rome to become a pupil of Liszt. (He was said to be one of Liszt’s favourite pupils!).

The Quintet was not premiered until a performance in 2011 in Lugano, and Marta Argerich and this team of musicians here recreate that performance, played last year in Warsaw.

“The star draw is the normally elusive Martha Argerich, bringing her volcanic pianism to bear on a work she had just added to her repertoire...This outstanding line-up of musicians - including Argerich's daughter Lyda Chen on viola - delivers an intensely committed performance of the Piano Quintet, full of freedom and flexibility. Superbly filmed but simply presented, there are no extras here: nothing more is needed given the impact of this music.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 *****

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra - a cultural icon of Israel and one of the greatest classical ensembles in the world - celebrated its 75th Birthday on December 26th, 2011 together with three outstanding soloists of the younger generation – Julian Rachlin, Evgeny Kissin and Vadim Repin. The concert took place in the spectacular Hangar 11 at the harbor in Tel Aviv. Zubin Mehta conducted a spectacular programme of Saint-Saëns, Bach, Chopin, Chausson and Beethoven.

The film ‘Coming Home’ by János Darvas portrays the orchestra and tells of its moving history, which is both a reflection of the history of Israel and the fate of the Jews in the 20th Century. With texts from memoirs, with material from radio interviews, home movies and photos from the orchestra’s archives, as well as from private collections, the film will not only tells the story of the orchestra, but draws parallels to the fates of many individuals. Historical footage brings the 75-year history of the orchestra to life in concerts with Arturo Toscanini, Arthur Rubinstein, Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Stern, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim and Itzhak Perlman. Interviews with orchestra members from the early years weave through talks with musicians that joined later, and with current orchestra members. Moreover, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Itzhak Perlman and Pinkas Zukerman have their say. We also get the opportunity to watch the Israel Philharmonic in rehearsals, concerts and tours.

Cage: BirdCage: 73'20.958' for a composer

Cage: BirdCage: 73'20.958" for a composer

Legendary Film by Hans G Helms, premiered at the Donaueschingen Festival in 1972

Carolyn Brown, Phillip Corner, Merce Cunningham, Teeny Duchamp, Don Gillespie, Doris Hays, Frederik Rzewski, Grete Sultan, Margaret Tan, David Tudor, Paul Zukofsky.

By releasing the DVD “BirdCage: 73'20.958" for a composer”, WERGO presents another highlight among the releases marking the composer's 100th birthday:

The legendary film collage, created in 1972 on commission of WDR and SWR on the occasion of the 60th birthday of John Cage and premiered at the Donaueschingen Music Festival, paints an extraordinary picture of Cage the Artist, of his musical and extra-musical thinking, his character and his remarkable oeuvre. The cinematographic composition, which is released here in the unabridged original version for the first time, was realisd by the composer and writer Hans G Helms in collaboration with Cage himself.

Helms assembled various film materials into a special kind of mosaic: Historical flashbacks, biographical milestones and music recordings are complemented by original commentaries of the composer's contemporaries, companions and friends, such as Carolyn Brown, Phillip Corner, Merce Cunningham, Teeny Duchamp, Don Gillespie, Doris Hays, Frederik Rzewski, Grete Sultan, Margaret Tan, David Tudor, and Paul Zukofsky. The twittering of birds – symbol of the aesthetically unintentional and basic material of Cage's tape composition “BirdCage” – runs like a thread through the film, forming its musical basis.

Valentina Lisitsa (piano)

The DVD recording of Valentina’s Lisitsa’s 19th of June 2012 Royal Albert Hall concert.

With more than 43 million views and over 52,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel, the young pianist is not only one of the fastest-rising stars of the international concert scene but probably the single most-watched classical musician, having rapidly overtaken long-established giants of the piano world in terms of global online viewing figures.

“Critics love to trash this kind of 'semi-pops' programme, yet Lisitsa often plays beautifully. While her opening salvo, Rachmaninovs G minor Prelude, is rather rushed and glib, the pianist quickly settles down to a direct and eloquent Fur Elise, followed by a breathtakingly brisk, imaginatively shaded La campanella.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012

“there's an admirable lightness of touch and appreciation of rhythmic flow to her "Für Elise", and her negotiation of Liszt's "Un Sospiro" is captivating.” The Independent, 7th July 2012 ****

“ This recital disc of short piano pops proves Lisitsa's technical skill rather than the potential depth or reach of her musicality. She opens, in reckless mood, with Rachmaninov's Prelude in G Minor, then settles into an elegant Für Elise” The Observer, 9th July 2012

A new release from the series of Metropolitan Munich programs.

Classified as EuroArts "Recorded Excellence", with high historical value and special pricing.

This selection of some of Bach’s most perennially popular keyboard music admirably demonstrates the many varied facets of the composer’s fertile imagination.

These performances exemplify perfectly the thoughtful and persuasive approach that András Schiff adopts when playing Bach.

Deep pathos is contrasted with witty humour, serenity is paired with fleetness of foot, and all these emotions prove that this brilliantly expressive musician is as ‘unique and unequalled’ today as he was when his first biographer, J.N. Forkel, wrote so eloquently about him more than two centuries ago.
