“Watching Boulez hone his interpretations is fascinating and the interspersed interviews, recorded at Berg's apartment in Vienna, are an effective complement. The VPO's approach to Boulez's own Notations is fascinating and the sheer beauty of their playing in what cannot be very familiar music to them is impressive.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2003 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | John Eliot Gardiner In Rehearsal
This present film of the rehearsal of Bach’s Canata BWV 63 is intercut with comments from the singers and an interview with John Eliot Gardiner which reveals not only the depth of his knowledge of Bach’s music but also his profound love of the composer’s work. He talks incisively about Bach’s music as a whole, the place of the cantatas in the composer’s oeuvre, the particular structure and brilliance of “Christen, ätzet diesen Tag”, and explains something of his reasons for championing authentic rendition. "We see Zubin Mehta teaching an experienced world-class band a well-known piece from scratch. He is affable and charismatic, oozing enthusiasm but also technically exacting...It is fascinating to watch the rehearsal process, expecially when, as here, the warts are included."

| | | Christoph Von Dohnányi - In Rehearsal
Recording the In Rehearsal programme, the cameras were witnessing part of the process of development of a new relationship between an orchestra and its Music Director. Dohnányi is seen working with the Philharmonia on Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G for a concert in their 1998 Haydn/Bartók series at London’s Royal Festival Hall. It was to be Dohnányi’s first Haydn performance with the orchestra and so the limited time available for preparation was of vital importance. The musician’s appreciation of his musically precise and exacting approach is evident in the concentrated atmosphere of rehearsals and also in comments they make about working with the maestro. "Have you ever asked yourself how a conductor moulds an orchestra and imbues it with his own musical vision? Well, I've never seen a more succinct demonstration than in these two black-and-white rehearsal sequences filmed in 1966 and 1968. The charismatic, awesomely well-prepared Solti puts the Stuttgart players through their paces as he rehearses Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture and Berlioz's Hungarian March, followed by complete performances of both short works. This is 87 riveting minutes of what it takes to be a great conductor. It should be required watching for all young maestros."
