Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia

Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia

live recording from the Schwetzingen Festival, 1988

Cecilia Bartoli (Rosina), David Kuebler (Il Conte Almaviva), Gino Quilico (Figaro), Carlos Feller (Bartolo), Robert Lloyd (Don Basilio), Edith Kertesz-Gabry (Berta)

Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Choir of Cologne City Opera, Gabriele Ferro (conductor) & Michael Hampe (stage director)

Rossini was 24 years old when in 1816 he wrote his seventeenth and most famous opera The Barber of Seville in an astonishing three weeks. Michael Hampe’s humorous direction of his 1988 live performance at the Schwetzingen SWR Festival stands out with its fast tempo that makes for a highly exuberant production. Ezio Firgerio’s appealing stage and Mauro Pagano’s colourful costumes heighten the comic effect. The musical direction of conductor Gabriele Ferro strikes a beautiful balance between a vibrant orchestral performance and a superb ensemble of singers. The irresistible Cecilia Bartoli as Rosina leads a cast that also includes David Kuebler, Gino Quilico and Carlos Feller.

“This is an effective, straightforward traditional performance under Gabriele Ferro, with Cecilia Bartoli in excellent voice, making this an irresistible production which should be in every collection.” Classical London

This set presents all of Wagner’s mature operas from seven leading European opera houses recorded during the last decade, featuring many of the most acclaimed Wagner singers of our age, in productions which exult in the force of Ezra Pound’s dictum, ‘Great art is news that stays news’. The directors Harry Kupfer, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, David McVicar and others heed Wagner’s own persuasive plea, ‘Children, make it new’, in stagings employing sophisticated modern technology within grand designs which face up to the breadth of Wagner’s dramatic genius and the social and political implications of his work for us today.

Paris Opera Orchestra & Chorus, Philippe Jordan

Stage direction and lighting design: Giorgio Strehler

The legendary production by Giorgio Strehler filmed at the Paris Opera with a cast that unites the finest Mozartians of our time.

A revival of Strehler's 'Marriage of Figaro' is always an event. In 2010, 37 years after its creation, it rose again in triumph at the Opera Bastille with a new generation of performers: Ludovic Tézier (Count Almaviva), Barbara Frittoli (Countess), Ekaterina Siurina (Susanna), Luca Pisaroni (Figaro) and Karine Deshayes (Cherubino).

Conductor, Philippe Jordan directs the Orchestra and Chorus of the Paris Opera.

Also in this bonus edition, there is an interview with Humbert Camerlo who has worked extensively with Giorgio Strehler and achieved this staging for the revival, which continues from September 15 to October 25, 2012 at the Opera Bastille for 14 special performances.

“This Franco-Italian-Russian-Irish-English combo plays well together … this cast sings well too...Jordan's conducting sound large-scale and Romantic to our period ears...this new set plays as a comfortable, conventional theatrical experience with much art onstage from cast and scenery.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012

“Unlike many Figaro productions these days, the physicality is never vulgar, and there are constant small touches that add character...[Pisaroni] displays the ideal bass-baritone instrument for this role, and his person is just as alive to every nuance as his singing...[Siurina] is marvellous when angry...no one on DVD has brought greater tonal shine and firmer technique to Susanna's music...[Frittoli] offers an absolutely complete characterization.” International Record Review, October 2012

CARMEN

This famous staging of Carmen from Vienna State Opera in 1978 was by the great Franco Zeffirelli, who not only directed the production but also the television broadcast. It is also a rare chance to witness the musical genius of conductor Carlos Kleiber, who made very few video recordings. Together they created a thrilling and dramatic production, which Domingo says was “very special”, and “will live in my mind forever.” Plácido Domingo was in his prime at the time of this performance. He considers the role of Don José to be very close to his heart because his mother, like Don José, was from the Basque country, and this empathy shows in his stunning portrayal. He is joined by Elena Obraztsova as a strong, but wonderfully natural Carmen, Isobel Buchanan as Micaëla, and Yuri Mazurok as Escamillo.

SAMSON ET DALILA

Plácido Domingo and Shirley Verrett star in the title roles in this live recording of the 1981/82 Season premiere from the San Francisco Opera, with Wolfgang Brendel as the High Priest of Dagon. The colourful and evocative sets and costumes reflect Saint-Säens’ melodic and sensual score, here conducted by Julius Rudel. Samson is one of Domingo’s favourite roles, partly for the profound beauty of the music, but also because of the character’s battle between duty to his people and his love of Dalila.

“Plácido Domingo and Shirley Verrett…incomparable in the title roles” SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

THE TALES OF HOFFMANN

This stunning 1980 Royal Opera production is by film director John Schlesinger and conducted by Georges Prêtre. The spectacular designs by Maria Björnson and William Dudley vividly bring Hoffmann’s nightmare world to life. Plácido Domingo sings the role of Hoffmann, in one of his towering portrayals. The all-star cast also includes Luciana Serra as Olympia, Agnes Baltsa as Giulietta, Ileana Cotrubas as Antonia, Robert Lloyd as Lindorf, Geraint Evans as Coppélius, Nicola Ghiuselev as Dr Miracle, and Siegmund Nimsgern as Dappertutto. Domingo very much enjoyed singing this most ‘complete’ of roles with the huge range of characterisation required.

“Plácido Domingo, surely the most compelling Hoffmann of his generation. The most stylish vocally, too” BBC Music Magazine

The Royal Opera Chorus & The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Charles Mackerras (conductor) & Nicolas Joël (stage director)

Sir Charles Mackerras teases the romantic beauty from Gounod’s score, which has been much admired and performed since its first performance, at the Théâtre Lyrique, Paris, in 1867. In this 1994 recording, the youthful Roberto Alagna as Roméo, and Leontina Vaduva as the unattainable Juliette, lead an excellent cast in a touching portrayal of this story of impossible love, based on the play by William Shakespeare.

Recorded live at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London on 15th & 17th November 1994.

Cheryl Studer, in the title role, leads an excellent cast in Elijah Moshinsky's 1994 production of Verdi's extravagant and magnificent Egyptian opera. Aida was acclaimed at its first performance in 1871 and has grown in stature ever since to become one of the best-loved and most-performed grand operas of all time.

“This DVD of a distinguished account of Verdi's grand opera from 1994 has a great deal to recommend it, yet in the end I'm not sure that it manages to avoid cliché of the sense that the work has gone slightly stale, for all its fine moments.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 ****

“[Sir Edward Downes’] command of the score's structure, its curious blend of delicacy and bombast, of classical propriety and romantic excess, is complete and he drew superbly disciplined playing from the pit and lusty singing from the augmented chorus.” The Times

Kirov Opera, Valery Gergiev

Recorded in 1990

“Film director Andrei Tarkovsky, famous for science- fiction classics Solaris and Stalker and the historical epic Andrei Rublev, was a master of symbolic effect – the gigantic pendulum, the grotesquely faceless Idiot, living statuary, the angelic murdered child amid falling snow. But against such stylisation the action, vividly captured by video director Humphrey Burton, comes correspondingly alive, no stiff Bolshoi pageant; chorus and soloists act their hearts out.
Borodina is an ideal Marina, beautiful and burnished of tone but chillingly self-absorbed; perhaps rightly, she strikes more sparks with Leiferkus's vampiric, honey-toned Rangoni than with Steblianko's stolid but lyrical Pretender. Ognovenko's Varlaam is somewhat young and baritonal, but foreshadows stardom, as does Dyadkova's superbly touching, plangent Feodor. Boitsov's Shuisky, Morosov's noble Pimen and Solodovnikov's Idiot are less outstanding but still excellent. The only outsider is at the centre. Robert Lloyd's Boris first appears (reflecting contemporary portraits) moustached but beardless; the customary hedge appears in later acts, neatly marking the passing years. His finely shaded bassocantante has been criticised for being too light, but such doubts fade before his idiomatic-sounding Russian and magnificent characterisation, culminating in a truly harrowing death scene.
Gergiev's reading is less brilliant than his dual recording, often rather soft-centred; but he still brings out the sheer anguished beauty of the score.
The excellent stereo soundtrack has also been remastered into DTS surround-sound, and very airy and ambient this sounds, from the opening wave of applause sweeping across the auditorium.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“an outstanding film...admirably conducted by Valery Gergiev, joined by Robert Lloyd as Boris, one of his greatest performances, and a superb supporting cast.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition
