This is a selection of outstanding examples of Buxtehude’s vocal and instrumental music. Settings of Latin biblical texts and ariosa-style works based on German hymns, alternate with instrumental sonatas. The recording has been given a special “North German” colouring through the use of a wide range of historical wind instruments such as the Baroque trombone and dulcian.

Simone Stella (harpsichord)

Dietrich Buxtehude (c.1637–1707) spent his career working as an organist in churches, but was also a prolific composer of secular instrumental music and wrote far more for harpsichord than most composers of his era.

Buxtehude’s position in Lübeck and fame as an organist brought him into contact with many of the greatest musicians of his day, and his style demonstrates the variety of musical influences that he was exposed to, particularly from German and Italian repertoire, which he combined to create a unique personal style.

This set of 4 CDs collects together Buxtehude’s complete music for harpsichord, including suites in the popular French style, several works that can be played effectively on both organ and harpsichord (including preludes, fugues, canzonas and choral elaborations), and variations on arias, which showcase the composer’s creativity and ability to compose music in a variety of styles.

Among the works featured are two new authentic harpsichord suites, discovered in 2004 and 2005, and the monumental La Capricciosa, one of the largest and most innovative solo keyboard works of the 17th century. Performed by Simone Stella, who has previously played Buxtehude’s complete organ music in a series of concerts, this collection is a comprehensive overview of the harpsichord music of a composer seen by many as J.S. Bach’s true predecessor.

“here we have an Italian eager to touch base with his inner Teuton, as Stella sets well-ordered lucidity above unfettered flamboyance. Indeed, he sometimes misses the edgy danger Koopman brings to Buxtehude's boldest strokes, but he's an unfailingly intelligent and revealing guide to a body of work that cries out to be better known.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2012 ****

“you can hardly go wrong with Stella's performances which are very good. He uses the harpsichord well and explores its various stops, mostly in a convincing and stylistically appropriate manner.” MusicWeb International, 5th December 2013

Buxtehude: Complete Organ Music

Simone Stella (organ)

The music of Dietrich Buxtehude has gained increased recognition and popularity over the last few years, not in the least due to the invaluable work of pioneers like Ton Koopman (Complete Buxtehude Edition) and others. The great Johann Sebastian Bach valued his music highly, and considered him one of the most important composers before him (and from whom he learned the most!).

After his successful issue of Buxtehude’s Complete Harpsichord Works (Brilliant Classics 94312),“Thoroughly imaginative and engaging”(Fanfare), “Uberzeugend und überraschend” Klassik.com), Italian Simone Stella plays these works on historical organs in Italy.

Excellent liner notes by the artist himself.

Buxtehude’s organ music is not only a fascinating precursor of his great admirer J.S. Bach but a body of work full of energy and beauty in its own right, a pinnacle of the early-Baroque Protestant aesthetic. Strict and florid counterpoint, lying at the centre of Bach’s style, is less important here; rather we can hear vibrant and directly illustrative responses to the texts which lie behind the chorales and instrumental versions of canticles such as the Magnificat and Te Deum. The toccatas and fugues are generally shorter and punchier than the mature Bach’s examples, and overall solemnity is generally eschewed in favour of exuberant virtuosity.

These characteristics fit well the mastery of Simone Stella, whose 3CD set of Buxtehude’s harpsichord music (BC 94312) has already proved him a doughty advocate of the composer. As BBC Music Magazine remarked, “here we have an Italian eager to touch base with his inner Teuton, as Stella sets well-ordered lucidity above unfettered flamboyance. Indeed, he sometimes misses the edgy danger Koopman brings to Buxtehude's boldest strokes, but he's an unfailingly intelligent and revealing guide to a body of work that cries out to be better known.”

The same is gratifyingly true of the new set, recorded on a bright and authentically tuned modern Italian instrument which nonetheless can aspire to the colours of the Danish organs on which Buxtehude plied his trade. There are only two other modern recordings available of the complete organ music, and both are fullprice.

Christopher Herrick (organ of Helsingør Cathedral, Denmark)

Dietrich Buxtehude was famously visited by J S Bach who walked from Arnstadt to Lübeck to hear him play. Bach stayed far longer than his employers expected, so captivated was he by the older man’s playing. That Handel also visited Lübeck, in 1703, further underlines Buxtehude’s stature.

The indefatigable Christopher Herrick has embarked on a complete series of Buxtehude’s organ music. The repertoire falls into two basic categories: free works, and works based on pre-existing melodies. To the first category belong the preludes and fugues, toccatas and fugues, ostinato works, and single-movement pieces such as the Fugue in C, BuxWV174. To the second belong the works based on chorale and plainsong melodies. A tantalizing selection of these is recorded here on the great organ of Helsingør Cathedral, Denmark.

“Buxtehude's organ music dives into two categories. There are the freely composed works in the standard forms of his time, and the pieces based on pre-existing music. The first disc in Christopher Herrick's series is a neat mixture of both. Preludes, fugues, toccatas and a chaconne are mixed with chorale preludes, variations and the chorale fantasia on Nun Freut Euch, Lieben Christen Gemein. Herrick's performances, on the organ of Helsingør Cathedral in Denmark, sometimes try a bit too hard to be ear-catching, yet their rhythmic vitality bodes well for the discs to come.” The Guardian, 16th May 2008 ***

“The recorded sound is warm and reassuring offering an ideal balance twixt instrument and acoustic. Production, engineering and playing are all splendid/” Gramophone Magazine, July 2008

“Herrick's razor-sharp articulation is at one with Buxtehude's fastidiously chiselled counterpoint…” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ****

“Herrick embarks on another epic for Hyperion, and the first instalment whets the appetite. Buxtehude’s delicate contrapuntal intricacy is offset by occasional flamboyance … the organ of Helsingør Cathedral, on Buxtehude’s home ground of Denmark, offers an excellent colour” Classical Music

“Herrick displays great energy and a keen ear for registrational variety” American Record Guide

Christopher Herrick (organ of Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, Norway)

Christopher Herrick’s acclaimed series of Buxtehude’s complete organ works continues with a selection of his praeludia, toccatas, ostinato works, and canzonas, interspersed with chorale preludes and variations. For this disc he turns to the magnificent organ of Trondheim Cathedral in Norway, originally built by Joachim Wagner (1690–1749) and restored to its former baroque glory in 1994.

Highlights from this disc include the brilliant, flamboyant Praeludium in G minor, BuxWV149. Here, as so often in Buxtehude’s organ works, one can picture an organist seated at a console completely free of music and giving his imagination full rein. Also, the Chorale Fantasia on Te Deum, BuxWV218, the only plainsong-based work on this CD and one of Buxtehude’s longest and grandest works for organ.

“The ambitious Te Deum and the grand Praeludium in C major confirm Buxtehude's inspiring originality. No wonder the young Bach once walked 200 miles to hear him play.” The Observer, 17th January 2010

“…Herrick brings a convincing sense of fluidity and a quasi-extemporaneous flair to the music… The recorded sound is ideal with traffic rumble minimised. Another triumph!” Gramophone Magazine, February 2010

“As in Vol. 1, Herrick's flair for apposite registration illuminate at every turn, and the first three notes of the opening G minor Praeludium serve notice that his phrasing will be nothing if not fastidious. …he lets the music (and instrument) speak eloquently for themselves - charmingly fluty in the C major Canzona, unexpectedly perky at the start of the E minor Ciaccona and sonorously splendiferous for the final Praeludium in C.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2010 ****

Christopher Herrick (organ of St-Louis-en-l'Île, Paris)

The latest volume of Christopher Herrick’s acclaimed series of Buxtehude’s complete organ works comes from Paris and the admired organ of St-Louis-en-l’Île – formally opened in 2005, and based on the work of Zacharias Hildebrant (1688-1757). As with previous discs, it includes a selection of the composer’s praeludia, ostinato works, canzonettas and canzonas, interspersed with chorale preludes, chorale fantasias and variations.

Highlights include the magnificent Praeludium in D minor, BuxWV140, which is among the finest and most striking examples of the genre, and a particularly beautiful and contrasting set of chorale preludes.

“Always captivating and frequently entertaining as he tosses off ornaments and decorative figures with the panache of a circus act, he communicates an enthusiasm for the music which never stoops to poor taste or anything less than thorough musical integrity. Always an invigorating communicator, he is as compelling in his dazzlingly articulated virtuoso displays as he is in the delicate chorale preludes.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2011

“An extraordinarily diverse tonal palette is explored in the chorale-based works...Within the more substantial works...Herrick makes numerous registration changes. These provide welcome variety and strengthen the rhetorical argument of these works which are often highly sectional in nature...This recording, along with its two predecessors in the series, is a first-rate addition to the catalogue.” International Record Review, April 2011

“Herrick is at his most persuasive in the chorale-embroidering preludes...commanding in the large-scale Magnificat Fantasia, to-the-point in the extended fugue which concludes BuxWV 145, and he discovers his inner Koopman-esque wild man at the start of the F sharp minor Praeludium whose key elicits a blaze of bullish 'attitude' from the organ's not-quite-equal temperament.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2011 ****

Christopher Herrick (organ of Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge)

This latest addition to Christopher Herrick’s acclaimed Buxtehude catalogue is performed on the magnificent Organ of Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge.

Everything heard on this disc was composed over three-hundred years ago when printed music was a rarity and organists were required to be highly proficient in the art of improvisation. Certainly none of Buxtehude’s organ works was printed in his lifetime, and it was not until 1875 that they first became available. Herrick’s communication is exceptional in these stimulating performances and his inspired interpretations are so vivid that they appear improvisatory in their approach.

“An unforced manner is essential for this oqpaue and, at times, fragile music...Registrations are beautifully balanced throughout, and the pleno, while thrilling, isn't overbearing...There is fizz and sparkle in all the right places and just enough warmth in the bass...This is shapely playing, with a touch of humour, especially in the spirghtly jigs. A thoroughly enjoyable production, with the customary excellent documentation.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2011
