Beethoven: Violin Concerto & Two Romances

Beethoven: Violin Concerto & Two Romances

Beethoven:

Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61

Romances Nos. 1 & 2 for violin and orchestra

Schubert:

Rondo for violin and strings in A major, D438

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto represents the supreme challenge for violinists. Far from being a virtuoso display piece, this is chamber music on a large scale, the last and greatest ‘classical’ violin concerto, giving the soloist no place to hide with a solo part that is often very exposed against sparse orchestral accompaniment. A lukewarm reception at the concerto’s premiere in 1806 led to it being forgotten until Joseph Joachim resurrected it in the 1850s and restored to its rightful position as one of the greatest and most popular concertos for the instrument. This is James Ehnes’ first recording of this concerto, and he is supported sensitively by the award winning RLPO and fellow violinist-turned-conductor, Andrew Manze. The combination of soloist, orchestra and conductor on this recording is a dream team.

Walton: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2

Walton: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2

Walton:

Symphony No. 1 in B flat minor

Symphony No. 2

Walton’s First Symphony burst onto the musical scene in 1935 and quickly became recognised as a masterpiece. The influence of Sibelius and Beethoven can clearly be heard, but it is Walton’s brilliant use of the orchestra and grasp of form that shines through: a remarkable achievement for a composer of 33 years. The Second symphony has never had an easy time, in both escaping the shadow of its older sibling, and in overcoming the hostility of the late 1950s and early '60s when avant-garde was de rigeur. Fortunately it is now clearly a masterpiece to rank alongside No.1. It is assured, mature and confident, subtle and refined, from a composer at the top of his game. High voltage performances from Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is Classic FM’s Orchestra in the South of England. It was formed in 1893 and throughout its illustrious history it has worked with some of the finest composers, conductors and musicians in the world including Elgar, Bartók, Sibelius, Holst, Stravinsky, Vaughan Williams and Sir Thomas Beecham.

Stravinsky: Rite of Spring

Stravinsky: Rite of Spring

Debussy:

Printemps, suite for piano 4 hands or orchestra, L. 61

Rachmaninov:

Spring, Op. 20

Stravinsky:

The Rite of Spring

Three works inspired by Spring – Stravinsky’s iconic and revolutionary 1913 ballet The Rite of Spring depicts Russian pagan tribes celebrating the emergence of Spring with frenzied dances and ritual sacrifice. The music has a rhythmic complexity and violence that caused a riot to break out at its premier in Paris. Rachmaninov’s Spring Cantata tells the story of a husband who has struggled through the harsh Russian winter knowing his wife has been having an affair with a younger man. He swears he will kill them, but on seeing the wonder of spring all around him, relents and forgives them both. Debussy’s early ‘Printemps’ of 1885 was said to have been inspired by Botticelli’s ‘Primavera’. Debussy was staying at the Villa Medici in Rome when he wrote this colourful and joyous work.

Ensemble Perspective, Geoffroy Heurard

Perspectives is anacappella ensemble comprising five singers who explore every kind of music, from the Renaissance to jazz and popular song. Their new album, ‘Songs of Experience’, is a journey through emotions and sentiments. ‘This programme enables contemporary ears to grasp the temporal threads that link Tallis to Tavener, a folksong to a song of today, the better to make their perspectives resonate’, says the group’s founder, Geoffroy Heurard. The ensemble invites us on a musical itinerary that begins in the Renaissance, enters Romantic territory with Schubert, then traverses the golden age of choral music in the Victorian age, and makes a detour by way of Ohana’s Spain before reaching Jacques Brel and a legendary David Bowie song of 1971, Life on Mars, which is a sensation in the exceptionally inspired interpretation of the five members of Perspectives. With Mathilde Bobot soprano, Marie Pouchelon alto, Sean Clayton tenor, Romain Bockler baritone, Geoffroy Heurard bass-baritone, musical director.

JS Bach: Du treuer Gott

JS Bach: Du treuer Gott

Leipzig Cantatas BWV 101 – 103 – 115

Bach, J S:

Cantata BWV101 'Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott'

Cantata BWV103 'Ihr werdet weinen und heulen'

Cantata BWV115 'Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit'

For the third time on the Phi label, Philippe Herreweghe gives us the opportunity to (re)discover three cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach – Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott, BWV 101, Ihr werdet weinen und heulen, BWV 103 and Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit, BWV 115. After two albums of cantatas written during the composer’s first year in Leipzig (LPH006 and LPH012), the Belgian conductor and his Collegium Vocale Gent, orchestra and choir, will be performing three cantatas he composed during his second year as Kantor at St Thomas’s. The choir and vocal soloists are once again challenged to produce performances of subtlety and refined virtuosity, and the instrumentarium is as rich and colourful as those heard previously in this series.

Orlando Gibbons: Fancies for the Viols

Orlando Gibbons: Fancies for the Viols

Francois Joubert-Caillet (viol)

L’Achéron

Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was one of the most complete musicians of the Elizabethan era. He made talented contributions to every genre of vocal and instrumental music. In the domain of the fantasia for viols, he wrote for numerous combinations of between two and six instruments and elaborated endlessly inventive formal structures, in which traces of Italianism are by no means absent. L’Achéron offers us a wide selection from this repertory, which it has recorded on viols based on early seventeenth-century English.

CPE Bach: 3 Sonatas for Viola da Gamba

CPE Bach: 3 Sonatas for Viola da Gamba

Bach, C P E:

Viola da gamba Sonata in D MAJOR Wq137 H559

Viola da gamba Sonata in C major, Wq.136, H.558

Keyboard Sonata in A minor, Wq. 50/3 (H138)

Johanna Rose (viola da gamba), Javier Núñez (harpsichord)

Composed during his time at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin, Bach's sonatas provided the court gamba player with ample opportunities to display both virtuosity and sensitivity. The viola da gamba was going out of fashion when the forward-looking CPE Bach composed these works, however they represent some of the finest and most expressive music in the instrument's repertoire.

Johanna Rose is a German viola da gamba player living in Seville, Spain. She is a member of the group Accademia del Piacere and has played with such esteemed ensembles as La Venexiana, La Grande Chapelle, La Orchesta Barroca de Sevilla, Música Prima, performing in major concert venues all over Europe, South America, EU and Japan.

Javier Núñez, a native of Seville, studied with Davitt Moroney and is professor of keyboard at the Conservatory in Majorca.

Bob Chilcott’s compositions are beloved with choral societies around the world, and this album represents the fruits of his recent collaborations with the US choir Choralis and their conductor Gretchen Kuhrmann. Featuring festive works for solo choir as well as choir and brass ensemble, at the centre of the programme is Wenceslas, inspired by the legend of the Bohemian King who braved the winter weather with his Page to save the life of a poor peasant, and incorporating the melody of the famous carol into each of its 8 movements. The disc includes the premiere recordings of Chilcott’s Gloria, which was premiered by the choir to great critical acclaim in 2015.
