Sarah Maria Sun (soprano), Jan Philip Schulze (piano)

The idea for a recital of ''Modern Lied'' came about over breakfast following the first concert Sun and Schulze performed together. Realizing that they enjoy the same things, Schulze said: ''Our next program should be harder. It should be the hardest program ever. We should put some of the greatest contemporary masterpieces of Lied in one program should be harder. It should be the hardest program ever. We should put some of the greatest contemporary masterpieces of Lied in one program. It should be just insanely beautiful and hard and most of all insanely good. No old stuff included.'' This recital is the result of that idea. The earliest work is Holliger's beautiful cycle on Morgenstern texts. It forms a bridge from traditional lieder to the modern. The Morgenstern Lieder have a completely different sense of harmony, very soft, somewhere between Debussy, Berg and Ravel.

“Sun and her pianist Jan Philip Schulze take all of these stylistic excursions in their accomplished stride, but it’s the extended centrepiece of the disc that demands the most of both of them. Helmut Lachenmann’s Got Lost...an exuberant showpiece, built around three sharply contrasted texts...Sun and Schulze never flinch.” The Guardian, 20th September 2017 ****

Piano à Deux

Husband and wife team Robert and Linda Stoodley are an adventurous duo with a very wide range of repertoire from the pops to major classical works which they present to appreciative audiences all around the world, spending much time as recitalists on cruise ships.

This new album features a programme of French music, including Debussy’s well known Petite Suite and the superb First Sonata for Piano Duet by George Onslow, contemporary of the young Mozart and on this showing an equal in compositional skill. Add to that Poulenc’s ‘Songs of Love and War’ arranged by Linda into a new suite of pieces, and we have a very entertaining and instructive album beautifully played.

Seven world premiere recordings of works by British composers with a range of styles but all in a modern but approachable and often very lyrical idiom from the deep and heartfelt Violin Concerto ‘Soft Stillness’ by Guto Puw to the stunningly simple yet beautiful new work from Michael Nyman. Many of these works were specifically written for, and premiered by, Madeleine Mitchell so this is a very special album for her personally as well as being a fine virtuoso concert. Most works on the album are for violin and piano with Nigel Clayton; Cerys Jones appears in the super violin duet ‘Atlantic Drift’ by Judith Weir, and Puw’s Concerto is a BBC recording with the BBCNOW and American conductor Edwin Outwater.

Madeleine Mitchell is an internationally acclaimed soloist with a fine discography and has been an inspiration to composers and painters, including Gerald Marks who created his artworks ‘The Madeleine Series’ between 1989 and 1991.

Intimate Voices, Christopher Stokes

For over twenty years, Britain’s foremost recorder player, John Turner, has composed a carol and sent the score as his Christmas Card. Until now just a personal gift to his friends, John was persuaded to record a selection, which has led to this beautiful album.

Presented by the chamber choir Intimate Voices and featuring sopranos Sasha Johnson Manning, Eleanor Gregory and Philippa Hyde in solo and duet pieces, with obbligato harp and oboe in some, this is a lovely mixed program of Nativity carols, composed very much in traditional style, in new settings of ancient texts.

John Turner is a fine composer but is chiefly known as a recorder player and champion of contemporary composers, with dozens of recordings to his credit, many from Divine Art and Métier.

Bach & Weiss: Music for Baroque Violin & Lute

Bach & Weiss: Music for Baroque Violin & Lute

Bach, J S:

Suite for Violin & Harpsichord Obligato in A major BWV1025

Johannes Pramsohler (violin), Jadran Duncumb (lute)

Partita for solo violin No. 2 in D minor, BWV1004

Johannes Pramsohler (violin)

Weiss, S:

Suite in A (SW 44)

Jadran Duncumb (lute)

The encounter of two geniuses is the background for this CD. In 1739 chamber lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss visited Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig where they competed in friendly improvisation contests. Even though Bach probably played the harpsichord on this occasion, Johannes Pramsohler and Jadran Duncumb attempt a reconstruction of the encounter; besides the magnificent Suite in A Major, BWV 1025 - a joint work of both composers - the programme includes solo works for lute and the famous Partita

in D Minor. Bach’s private secretary wrote at the time: “Something extra special is happening here.” Johannes Pramsohler performs on this recording to continue the Audax label’s ethos of interesting repertoire, beautifully performed.

Johannes Pramsohler was born in South Tyrol, studied in London and is now based in Paris. He has established himself internationally as an eminent expert of historically informed performance and enjoys an increasingly busy career as a soloist.

On this CD he plays his P.G. Rogeri from 1713, previously owned by Reinhard Goebel. Jadran Duncumb won the String Category of the “BBC Young Musician of the Year” as a guitar player and went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London under Gary Ryan. After lute lessons with Jakob Lindberg, he studied lute, baroque guitar and basso continuo at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Musik in Trossingen with Prof. Rolf Lislevand and graduated with distinction in 2015. In the same year he won the 1st prize at the “Maurizio Pratola” lute competition in L’Aquila, Italy.

Philippe Grisvard (harpsichord)

Even though Handel's œuvre for solo keyboard is somewhat irregular and less extensive than that of Bach or Domenico Scarlatti, it remains nevertheless immensely fascinating and surprising. In fact, by exploring the various genres (suite, capriccio, fugue, chaconne, ...) outside of the famous Walsh collections of Suites (1720 & 1733), we discover the composer's many distinct faces. For his first solo album Philippe Grisvard looks also at composers who played essential roles in the development of Handel's style, such as Zachow, Krieger, Mattheson and Babell and thus draws a vivid and colourful picture of Handel's life.

Philippe Grisvard was born in Nancy. After harpsichord lessons with Anne-Catherine Bücher he studied at the Schola Cantorum Basel with Jesper Christensen and Edoardo Torbianelli. Philippe now lives in Paris and plays regularly with Le Poème Harmonique, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, La Fenice, La Chapelle Rhénane, Le Cercle de L’Harmonie, Les Nouveaux Caractères, Opéra Fuoco and Emmanuelle Haïm's Le Concert d'Astrée. Philippe is one of the core members of the Ensemble Diderot and is a sought after basso continuo expert who plays with many of today's leading baroque musicians. This album marks his long awaited solo debut.
