The Patriarch Choir

The Patriarch Choir

A documentary by Andrei Andreev

Moscow Patriarch Choir of Christ the Saviour Cathedral, Ilya Tolkachev

This documentary is dedicated to the Moscow Patriarch Choir of Christ the Saviour Cathedral and its director Ilya Tolkachev, rightly considered one of the best choirs of the Orthodox world. After over 130 years in existence, it continues the glorious traditions of church singing in Russia. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow is the seat of Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Church, which was destroyed by the Stalin regime and rebuilt in the 1990s. It is itself a symbol for the tradition and the reinvigoration of the Russian Church.

Speer: Musicalisch Turckischer Eulen-Spiegel

Speer: Musicalisch Turckischer Eulen-Spiegel

Markus Miesenberger (tenor)

Ars Antiqua Austria, Gunar Letzbor

In the year 1688, when the 52-year-old Georg Daniel Speer, son of a reputed peltmonger family of Breslau, had his Musicalisch-Türckischer Eulen-Spiegel published in Ulm, he was an organist and assistant teacher in South Germany and already had an eventful life behind him. At the age of 18, he sets off on his way through the Carpathian Mountains to Spisz (located in the north-east of present-day Slovakia). Throughout the following years, he works as a mercenary for various armies, once as an army drummer, then as a bugler in the war of Hungary against the Turks. Finally, he reaches Constantinople in the company of a “high-born lord”.

In his Musicalisch-Türckischer Eulen-Spiegel, Speer sets texts from his picaresque novel Ungarischer oder Dacianischer Simplicissimus in music. Spear lets his hero Lompyn travel musically through all the countries then affected by the Turkish invasion. To this effect, the versatile composer created dances and melodies in the style of each of these almost exotic peoples. From the large number of stories, Gunar Letzbor, the leader of Ars antiqua Austria, chose two CD filling programs: the already released CD with War Stories (PC10317) of our hero Lompyn and now his Love Affairs. These are erotic accounts from the past that provide a certain antithesis to the war stories. In Love Affairs, we witness a few spicy scenes illustrating how little the world of love has changed its face over the centuries. The erotic allusions titillate today as they did then.

Musica Fiorita, Daniela Dolci

Well on time for St Cecilia’s Day on 22 November, Pan classics presents a new recording of the impressive ode composed by Handel. The fine Basel-based orchestra Musica Fiorita, conducted by Daniela Dolci, performs this well-known work with their trademark historically informed knowledge and elegance, perfectly translating Handel’s intentions in terms of underlining the text with very intentional use of musical affects. The Ode for St Cecilia’s Day is joined on this CD by the Concerto grosso op. 6 no. 4, a further ocassion to appreciate the ensemble’s fine playing.

Vanhal: Sonata Nos 1 & 3 for Clarinet

Vanhal: Sonata Nos 1 & 3 for Clarinet

Quintet in E flat major for piano and winds, Op.16

Sonata No. 1 in B flat for Clarinet and Piano

Sonata No. 3 in B-flat Major for Clarinet and Piano

Geert Baeckelandt (clarinet), Didier Castell-Jacomin (piano)

Highlighting Beethoven's Op 16 Piano and Wind Quintet by two of the three sonatas for Piano and Clarinet, extracted from the work of Johann Baptist Waňhal, a Czech composer from Bohemia who has lived in Vienna since 1762, allows to linger on the contrasts of the musical life of this end of the eighteenth century by questioning more particularly the transmission of Mozartian musical heritage, made of the talent of the latter, enriched by the contribution and influence of musicians from Bohemia, who "trusted" the Viennese musical education and, in fact, helped shape the gift of the Austrian composer (Myslivecek) as Tobias Pfeiffer, another Bohemian pedagogue, the one of the precocious Ludwig.

"Here we have a very good interpretation on a modern piano (Vanhal's sonatas), and then, face to Vanhal, we discover the Beethoven Quintet for piano and wind composed at the same period. The interpretation remains there at a very high level ! ". Marc Vignal - Classica magazine France. (April 2017).

Ensemble Les Temps Modernes

In the history of art, not only in the field of music, there are very particular, almost inexplicable, cases of artists whose origins are mysterious and express themselves with absolute originality. They do not belong to any current and will later be recognized as "prophets from afar". In painting, El Greco is certainly an emblematic example. Where does this painting come from, which uses color and light in a way that is so different from the style in vogue in the Renaissance and which will be found two centuries later ? In music, let us think of Gesualdo da Venosa: where does its extreme chromaticism come from beyond all convention?

And the Scarlatti Sonatas or the last works of Skrjabin ? Obviously, far from me the idea of comparing Luca Antignani to the artists cited before. But there is something in his music and his journey, something totally personal and difficult to classify, something that one can adore or hate but which does not leave indifferent, like all strong and original things, something that makes particularly interesting the comparative listening of his pieces, immediately identifiable and totally characteristic, whose evolution can be followed from one composition to another.

A Little Christmas Music: If you’ve ever sung in a church choir or muffled up and sallied forth on a starry night in the bleak midwinter to go singing round the houses with a few friends, or if your idea of Christmas is a candle-lit hall decked with boughs of holly and distant voices singing familiar carols then you will derive real nostalgic cheer from this album – a festive Christmas journey with the King’s Singers and a cheeky homage in the form of a Mozart medley.

Brahms: Violin Concerto - Vinyl Edition

Brahms: Violin Concerto - Vinyl Edition

Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77

Heroic, dramatic, reflective and joyous, Brahms’s Violin Concerto, written for the great Joseph Joachim, a close friend of the composer, is one of the monuments of the Romantic repertoire. In a performance of epic sweep, Itzhak Perlman and Carlo Maria Giulini do full justice to its ambitions. This record has been regarded at the time it was released as “one of the greatest Brahms recordings of all time” (Guide Diapason). 40 years after its original release, it remains an absolute must-have, and a reference recording of the Brahms Concerto.

It also benefits from the 24-BIT/96kHz remastering done at Abbey Road in 2015.

Vilde Frang (violin), José Gallardo (piano)

Vilde Frang’s Encores is more than a captivating programme of short pieces for violin and piano, it is also a homage to the players of the Golden Age of the Violin, such as Fritz Kreisler, Leopold Auer and Joseph Szigeti. The recital includes music originally conceived not just for the violin, but also for piano, orchestra or voice, and proves once again, as BBC Music Magazine wrote, that “Frang has the knack of breathing life into every note, whether by variations in phrasing, attack, tone or dynamic.”

Vilde Frang has conceived the album as something of a homage to her illustrious predecessors. Born in 1986, she is clearly very much a violinist of today, and – as a Norwegian trained in Germany – she did not grow up in the Central and Eastern-European tradition of Heifetz, Kreisler, Auer and Szigeti. That being said, she brings her own, distinctively captivating magic to her instrument. As Gramophone wrote of her performance of the Korngold concerto, a work that has its roots in the composer’s glorious late-Romantic scores for Hollywood: “Frang has a winning way with the rubato that makes the melodies yearn and smile, but there’s a fragile thread of silver woven through her passagework that bounces off the glinting accompaniment of the Frankfurt RSO as an opalescent gown catches the light in a mirrored ballroom. Fresh thought illuminates each phrase and she has the technique to bring off every idea, from the wild caprice of the first movement’s dash to the double-bar, to a coquettish (or demure?) restraint in the finale’s big tune.”

“I’m thrilled to record my first album for Warner Classics, with the freedom to explore music from Baroque to jazz,” said Lucienne. “It was a great honour and privilege to collaborate with artists I admire; notably Erik Truffaz, who improvises in duet with me for a new orchestral arrangement of Gershwin’s Summertime, and Rolando Villazón who suggested we record a Donizetti aria together.” Lucienne and her guest soloists recorded with the Orchestre National de Lille, conducted by Roberto Rizzi Brignoli.

At just 18, Lucienne has a bright future ahead of her and is the first student at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris to have ever been accepted on both the classical and jazz course at the same time, and notably also the youngest and first female student to do so.
