Brahms: Symphony No. 2 & Haydn-Variations

Brahms:

Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73

Variations on a theme by Haydn for orchestra, Op. 56a 'St Anthony Variations'

Jukka-Pekka Saraste became principal conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra at the beginning of the 2010/11 season. This release features Brahmss Second Symphony, which is often called his 'Pastoral'. It was written during a happy holiday in Pörtschach in 1877. Brahms wrote to his friend in Vienna, the critic Eduard Hanslick: 'The Wörthersee is virgin ground. Melodies fly around there, so that you have to take care not to step on them'. The work was premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Hans Richter in December 1877, where it was a great success.

Two Solos for Archtop Guitar

In the world of new music where ‘anything goes’ it is a very special composer who can create a sound and style so individual that it stands out as exceptional; such a composer is David Braid, whose writing is truly ‘art-music’ but has resonances with tone colours found in other genres which make its appeal almost universal, as seen by his recent album on Toccata Classics.

The key to his sound is first a choice of awesomely good performers, including the most perfect mezzo-soprano voice of today, owned by Emily Gray; and also to Braid’s use of the resonant archtop (electric) guitar which is a perfect accompaniment to the vocal tracks and a nicely matched partner for the piano.

Certainly one of the most distinctive and beautiful new-music albums of recent times.

Die Wunderinsel: excerpts

'Dies Bildnis is bezaubernd schön', Taminos famous aria from Mozart's Zauberflöte, has become the signature piece of Fritz Wunderlichs 13-year career. It was his first stage role as a student on 21 July 1954, and it was the last piece he sang on 5 September 1966 during a guest performance at the Stuttgart State Opera in Edinburg. The recording on this album is from 17 April 1959. Most interesting are the excerpts from Schubert operas, including previously unreleased arias from Fierrabras, and excerpts from the generally unknown opera Die Wunderinsel. Music journalist Kurt Honolka combined pieces by Schubert, mostly from Alfonso und Estrella, with parts of Shakespeares The Tempest. The resulting pastiche was first performed in January 1958 at the Stuttgart Opera and recorded later that year. Arias by Beethoven and from Haydns Die Jahreszeiten complete this collection of classical arias. Of course, Wunderlich had a much wider repertoire, which is duly reflected in the SWR Edition 'Fritz Wunderlich The SWR Recordings'. This series contains all the recordings that the young singer, opera performer and later world star recorded for the SWR. Fritz Wunderlichs voice is simply incomparable, perfect in emotional expression.

Hans Werner Henze: Lieder Von Einer Insel and other works

Hans Werner Henze: Lieder Von Einer Insel and other works

Henze, H:

Lieder von einer Insel

Orpheus behind the wire

Fünf Madrigale

Hans Werner Henzes choral works are not central to his oeuvre, but are in many respects fundamentally reflective of his artistic philosophy. The three choral works on this album date from 1947 (Fünf Madrigale), 1963 (Lieder von einer Insel) and 1978: Orpheus, Henzes first a cappella choral composition. In recording these pieces, the outstanding SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart and the Ensemble Modern again make a key contribution to the music of an important German composer.

Svjatoslav Richter plays Grieg, Franck and Ravel

Ravel:

Valses nobles et sentimentales

Miroirs, 5 pieces for piano

While there is no disputing Richter's extraordinary technique, what set his interpretations apart was his ability to immerse himself completely into the music he performed, allowing the purity of the composer's original vision to dominate his musical choices. Richter himself said: 'The interpreter is really an executor, carrying out the composer's intentions to the letter. He doesn't add anything that isn't already in the work. If he is talented, he allows us to glimpse the essence of the work that is in itself a thing of genius and that is reflected through him. He shouldn't dominate the music, but should dissolve into it'. This extraordinary approach is on full display in this programme. Collectors have long regarded Richter's performances of Grieg's Lyric Pieces as definitive, while his Ravel emphasises the inherent neo-classical structure underlying the virtuosic display.

Bach in Black

Bach in Black

violin concertos in minor keys & selected works for alto voice

Dmitry Sinkovsky

La Voce Strumentale

The melancholy genius of Bach, as told by the voice and violin of Dmitry Sinkovsky.

The charismatic and atypical musician, Dmitry Sinkovsky, expresses his artistry through three different musical means: as violinist, conductor and countertenor. A rare combination that Sinkovsky presents at the highest musical level on musical stages across the globe.

In his playing of multiple musical roles, Sinkovsky neatly reflects one of the main ide-as of the Baroque era: using the instrument as a singer’s voice, and, conversely, the human voice as the perfect instrument.

After virtuosic contributions as a violinist to the Vivaldi Edition, as well as a 2015 recording dedicated to the Prete rosso himself – with everything from the passion of the Four Seasons to opera arias and sacred music - Dmitry Sinkovsky now turns his hand to the ultimate musical reference: Bach.

The programme is carved around the spiritual, melancholic, oratorical and sometimes sombre force of the music of the master of Leipzig. Interspersed between the three concertos for violin and their famous adagios (in which the expressiveness of Sinkovsky’s playing is nothing short of a miracle), Sinkov-sky as countertenor sheds a new and very personal light on three of the purest jewels in the whole of music: ‘Erbarme Dich’ (St. Matthew Passion), ‘Es Ist Volbracht’ (Saint John Passion) and ‘Agnus Dei’ (Mass in B Minor).
