Erin Helyard (harpsichord)

Erin Helyard – acclaimed internationally as a leading light in the new generation of baroque music specialists – presents his debut solo album, surveying the keyboard works of George Frideric Handel.

Acclaimed as “Australia’s most engaging soloist” by Limelight Magazine, Helyard is a virtuosic and expressive performer as well as a dedicated scholar of historically informed performance practice. This album was recorded shortly before Helyard was awarded the 2017 Helpmann Award for Best Music Direction, for Handel’s opera Saul, the latest in a long line of accolades for his work.

Whilst Handel is celebrated mostly for his oratorios and operas (such as Saul), in his lifetime he was also known as a brilliant harpsichordist. His music for the instrument – surprisingly little of which survives – is full of virtuosity, dynamism, and supreme lyrical colour.

The Great Suites, as they have become known, were first published in 1720 when Handel was 35. Written over the preceding few years, they are remarkable for their eclectic and wide-ranging idioms: French-style overtures, Italian sonatas and arias, and the dance elements of the Franco-German keyboard suite. As Helyard puts it, “the suites give us the impression of a performer and composer who was highly sophisticated, well-travelled, open-minded, and cosmopolitan.“

The Chaconne which opens the disc is an example of a genre beloved of both music-masters and amateurs. The repetitive form allowed both technical and expressive skills to be showed off: Helyard plays from a 1730s score with handwritten ornamentation that demonstrates how musicians at the time would have risen to the challenge. The album closes with a set of variations on Handel’s opera arias by William Babell, a violinist and harpsichordist in George I’s private band. “Inventive, difficult, showy, and glittering, they are entirely reflective of the grandeur of opera under Handel at its most splendid.“

Helyard plays a harpsichord made by Jacob and Abraham Kirckman in London in 1773, one of very few instruments from the time that have survived unaltered from their original state. This harpsichord is particularly remarkable for its ‘machine stop’, allowing the player to produce diminuendo and crescendo effects without lifting his hands from the keys.

Verdi: Requiem

Verdi: Requiem

Krassimira Stoyanova (soprano). Veronica Simeoni (mezzo-soprano), Francesco Meli (tenor), Georg Zeppenfeld (bass)

Ballett Zürich, Philharmonia Zürich, Chor und Zusatzchor der Oper Zürich, Fabio Luisi, Christian Spuck (direction and choreography)

With the „Messa da Requiem“, Christian Spuck brought one of Verdi’s key works to the stage. In a large-scale co-production by the Ballett and Oper Zürich, the German choreographer and director ventured to portray an unusual interpretation of Verdi’s funeral mass in his scenic-choreographic production.

36 dancers, the choir and supplementary choir of the Opernhaus Zürich as well as four highly acclaimed soloists joined together under the direction of Fabio Luisi for 13 wide-ranging scenes dedicated to one of the most fundamental themes of humanity. Christian Spuck does not seek a mere religious interpretation of the liturgical text. Instead, he is interested in focusing on people who, in their vulnerability and helplessness, are in the search for comfort. In poetic tableaux he deals with basic human emotions and focuses on the feelings of fear, rage, pain, sadness and the search for redemption.

February 1993 in Cardona, Spain

The 'Cantigas de Santa Maria' (Canticles of Holy Mary) are 420 poems with musical notation, written during the reign of Alfonso X The Wise (1221–1284) and often attributed to him. It is one of the largest collections of monophonic songs from the Middle Ages and is characterised by the mention of the Virgin Mary in every song.

The reissue in remastered multichannel sound of this 1993 landmark recording enables us to hear Jordi Savall and his ensembles at their best. Instrumental and vocal pieces alternate and paint a vivid picture of a repertoire, that contributed much to the birth of Western music.

Alexis Kossenko (transverse flute, recorders, direction)

Les Ambassadeurs

For his new album 'Soave e virtuoso', Alexis Kossenko went on the trail of rare scores from the baroque era, reminding us that Italian repertory might give pride of place to the the violin and voice, but doesn’t forget wind instruments. At the head of his ensemble Les Ambassadeurs, the conductor and flautist Alexis Kossenko performs concertos by Tartini, Vivaldi and Sammartini: often voluptuous, sometimes dreadfully acrobatic, these scores require technique and sensitivity from the soloist. With a jubilant virtuosity, at the service of expressiveness, Alexis Kossenko, multi-skilled musician as at ease with flute as with recorder, brings new life to the works of the three Italian masters.

This important set contains the sixteen Beethoven sonatas that Wilhelm Kempff recorded for Grammophon in Germany between 1940 and 1943. Several are reissued here for the first time since their original release on 78rpm discs and none are currently available elsewhere. The sound is excellent for the period and all reveal the young Kempff at his best, in performances that compliment his later thoughts. The release is the companion of two previous APR releases of early Kempff Beethoven recordings the late sonatas (APR6018) and piano concertos 1, 3, 4 & 5 (APR6019), both of which received excellent reviews and were amongst APRs best sellers.
