Late in the nineteenth century, Henry May, New York's golden child, has reached the end of a long road to self-destruction. In debt and drug addicted, he is simply marking time until his eventual exile into poverty and oblivion. On the other side of the city Henry Long carefully observes May's decline, devoting his brilliant mind to the constant surveillance of his former school friend. May and Long finally meet and begin a complicated and dangerous odyssey that leads them to the sea and beyond. The houses and families of New York's golden age as well as the timeless underworld of the city are vividly brought to life as May and Long journey to the possible resolution of both their troubled lives. Both men discover what they have lost to get where they are, what they are willing to risk to get what they want and what they are willing to lose to live. (IMDB)

Brahms & Dvorak: Piano Trios

Brahms:

Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, Op. 8

Dvorak:

Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90 (B166) 'Dumky'

The Z.E.N. Trio

The Z.E.N. Trio – pianist Zhang Zuo, violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan – met on the BBC New Generation Artists’ scheme in 2015 and have since performed concerts together for BBC radio as well as across the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

While the trio’s name, “Z.E.N.” is an acronym for the three artists’ initials, it also represents the philosophy with which they approach chamber music making - the forgoing of the self for total togetherness.

An imaginative and electrifying performer, Zhang Zuo (“Zee Zee”) began her musical training in Germany at the age of five.

Upon returning to her native China, she became one of the most sought after young artists in the nation, collaborating with leading Chinese orchestras with whom she retains a close link.

Esther Yoo first came to international attention in 2010 when, aged 16, she became the youngest prize winner of the 10th International Sibelius Violin Competition.

From 2014 to 2016 she was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, culminating in her BBC Proms debut.

Esther plays regular return engagements with Philharmonia Orchestra at London’s Royal Festival Hall as well as with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed in tours across Asia and South America.

Since winning the Cello First Prize and Gold Medal at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011 at the age of 22, Narek Hakhnazaryan has performed with most major orchestras across the globe and has established himself internationally as one of the finest cellists of his generation.

EXPO 1 is a well-balanced selection of tracks by Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Chilly Gonzales, Joep Beving, Lambert, Luke Howard, Ólafur Arnalds, with interpretations by Víkingur Ólafsson, Hilary Hahn and Francesco Tristano

EXPO 1 presents the most popular music from the today’s leading ‘neo-classical’ composers, that is, the most influential voices in the current wave of post-minimalist composition where contemporary classical and alternative popular musical styles collide. The result is a fascinating kaleidoscope of individual musical approaches and styles, both in composition and interpretation.

At the heart of this music lies a question: does new and revolutionary music have to be aggressive, or can it be experimental, thought-provoking, challenging yet gentle at the same time? A new striking simplicity, occasionally mixed with edgier sounds is what connects the multifaceted approaches featured on EXPO 1.

Alexandre Tharaud (piano), with Juliette Binoche, Vanessa Paradis, Jane Birkin, Radio Elvis, Bénabar, Juliette, Dominique A, Tim Dup, Jean-Louis Aubert, Albin de la Simone, Camélia Jordana, Rokia Traoré, Hindi Zahra, Luz Casal, Guillaume Gallienne, Renaud Capuçon, Michel Porta, Modigliani string quartet

For this double album, pianist Alexandre Tharaud invited a spectacular array of guest performers to join him in paying tribute to the singer-songwriter Barbara, who died 20 years ago, in November 1997. She shares a place of honour in French song with two other ‘B’s’, Jacques Brel and Georges Brassens. Among the featured artists are three world-famous actress-singers Juliette Binoche, Vanessa Paradis and Jane Birkin.

It is 20 years since Barbara died, aged 67, on November 24th 1997. Alexandre Tharaud’s idea for this album dates back to the day of her funeral. He, like many other fans, went to the cemetery in Bagneux on the outskirts of Paris. After the crowds and TV cameras had departed, a group of devotees remained at her grave and joined in an impromptu rendition of her songs. “I realised then that Barbara would live on through our voices,” says Tharaud. “I was young, but the recording studio was already central to my life. That morning, at Bagneux Cemetery, I vowed to make an album dedicated entirely to the music of Barbara. I needed time, and singers … The guests on this album are not those anonymous mourners, but dear friends I have invited to lend their own unique voices to this tribute.”

For Barbara, Tharaud has assembled a rich and imaginative line-up of performers from a variety of generations and diverse artistic and cultural backgrounds. While there is inevitably a Gallic bias among them, many of their names are well known around the globe. Among them are: actress-singers Juliette Binoche, Vanessa Paradis and Jane Birkin; rock star Radio Elvis; singer-songwriters Bénabar, Juliette, Dominique A, Tim Dup, Jean-Louis Aubert and Albin de la Simone; singers Camélia Jordana, Rokia Traoré, Hindi Zahra and Luz Casal; actor-director Guillaume Gallienne; Erato violinist Renaud Capuçon, clarinettist Michel Portal and the Modigliani string quartet. Alexandre Tharaud himself plays on nearly all the tracks – not just piano, but also electronic organ and keyboards, celesta and bells.

Tears of a Lover - Monteverdi and Reflections

Tears of a Lover - Monteverdi and Reflections

Fieri Consort

Fieri Consort has launched its debut album, Tears of a Lover, featuring madrigals by Marenzio and Monteverdi and a new work by contemporary composer Ben Rowarth.

Founded in 2012, Fieri Consort has evolved into one of the United Kingdom’s most exciting young vocal groups, offering a unique blend of technical precision and theatrical innovation.

Performing without a conductor, Fieri presents innovative and engaging programmes, and specialises in the rich and varied tradition of 16th and 17th century Italian repertoire. Performing a cappella, accompanied by early instruments, with guests and even, memorably, with members of their audiences, Fieri’s interpretations are always ingenious and informed by the collective experience and knowledge of the group.
