Violin Sonata, FP 119

Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 80

Violin Sonata in A minor 'Sonate posthume'

Guro Kleven Hagen (violin), Marianna Shirinyan (piano)

Ravel’s unknown, tender sonata fragment, Poulenc’s dramatic, sad violin sonata and Prokofiev’s dark sonata in F Minor. Guro Kleven Hagen and Marianna Shirinyan have chosen profound music for their first release together.

Ravel’s lost sonata

The album’s first piece derives from a sonata written by Ravel in 1897 at the age of 22 – the same age as Hagen – which was discarded and not rediscovered until 1975. In this movement many of the shifts and the poetic expression that became Ravel’s trademark are apparent.

Poulenc and Prokofiev

In 1942/43, while his country suffered from horrible war, Francis Poulenc wrote his only published violin sonata. The piece was dedicated to the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who was killed in the Spanish Civil War. The subtitle of this slow movement, ‘La guitar fait pleurer les songes’ (The guitar makes the dreams cry), a line from one of Lorca’s poems, provides the title for the present release. Premiered by David Oistrakh in 1946, Sergei Prokofiev’s first violin sonata concludes the program. As with Poulenc’s sonata, this piece was written with the 2nd world war as a dramatic backdrop. Oistrakh himself is quoted as saying: ‘nothing written for violin for many years, here or anywhere else, has the beauty or depth to match this piece’.

Guro Kleven Hagen and Marianna Shirinyan

Guro Kleven Hagen, born 1994, hails from the mountainous Norwegian region of Valdres. She plays a C. Bergonzi, that has belonged to, among others, masters Fritz Kreisler and Itzhak Perlman. After her recording debut in 2014 Hagen has been a much-sought after soloist with orchestras in Europe and Asia. Moreover, she is a diligent chamber musician playing festivals both at home and abroad along with artists Janine Jansen, Leif Ove Andsnes, Maxim Rysanov and Shlomo Mintz. Hagen is also the artistic director of the chamber music festival Valdres Sommersymfoni, and has been picked for the prestigious Crescendo-programme.

Armenian-born Marianna Shirinyan is one of the most creative and in demand pianists on the European scene today. As a soloist, she is a mainstay with many of the largest festivals. She has received Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s renowned P2 award for her contribution to Danish music. Shirinyan is professor of the piano at the Norwegian Academy of Music, a Steinway artist and artistic director at the Fejoe Chamber Music Festival in Denmark.

Cello Sonata

Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 65

Cutler, J:

2016 was a Sad Year for Pop Music

Elegy for Cello & Piano op.5

Cello Sonata No. 2

Alexander Baillie (piano), John Thwaites (piano)

This is an arresting collection of music for cello and piano by British composers, ranging from such masterpieces as Britten’s seminal Cello Sonata (written for Rostropovich) to Joe Cutler’s brilliant new showpiece ‘2016 was a Bad Year for Music’, whilst taking in such superb recent works as James MacMillan’s Second Cello Sonata and the Sonata by Richard Rodney Bennett – written for Alexander Baillie and first performed by him – alongside shorter evocative pieces by Frank Bridge, Kenneth Leighton and EJ Moeran.

The CD adds up to a terrific programme of familiar and lesser-known works by a galaxy of British composers, making it the first choice album of British Cello Music for music-lovers and students everywhere.

Richard Rodney Bennett wrote and dedicated his Sonata for Cello and Piano in 1991 to Alexander Baillie, who recalled: ‘The composer had not heard my playing and I suggested he might like to listen in to a broadcast of the Dutilleux Concerto with me as soloist. He told me how much he loved the music. He waited till I had made my first acquaintance with the Sonata and then asked me knowingly “Well?“ He was assuming I had already noticed an exquisite phrase paying homage directly to a memorable moment in the Dutilleux. It is not a direct quote. It is more like one great composer tapping into the same elixir which has nourished another.’

Joe Cutler’s short piece for cello and piano ‘2016 was a sad year for pop music’ was also written for the artists on this CD and is a first recording. The composer explains: This piece was written at the request of Sandy and John, and is dedicated to them. It’s less than five minutes long, and draws upon material from three great artists who very sadly passed away in 2016. David Bowie, Prince and Leonard Cohen. The songs of David Bowie and Prince were constant presences in the listening of my childhood, and I’ve always admired how lyrics and music entwine and coalesce in the songs of Leonard Cohen.

In this small homage, the quiet block-like chords that form the piece’s introduction are loosely taken from Prince’s 1999. Then, in the main body of the piece, the ‘verses’ use the chord sequence of Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne whilst the harmonic material of the ‘choruses’ come from David Bowie’s Space Oddity.Throughout, the cello line floats over these harmonies with free-flowing melodic material.’

Suite variée for Piano: Ostinato

This delightful disc of favourite – and occasionally unfamiliar – piano music played by pianist Philip Martin fulfils several functions: it is, first and foremost, a collection of ‘personal choice’ encore pieces, some of which are amongst the world’s favourite piano music, with others coming into the unjustly neglected genre, all of which have a special affection in Philip’s comprehensive repertoire. Secondly, we encounter the art of this much-admired Irish musician as a composer, whose own music possesses an individuality and immediacy of appeal that confirms his qualities as a musical communicator to his audience. And finally (although it is not ‘final’!), this exceptionally well-filled CD is released

as Philip Martin prepares coincidentally to celebrate his 70th birthday and 50 years in the music profession with a wide-ranging selection that indicates the range and artistry of this truly international musician.

Philip was born in Dublin but soon made his mark internationally, establishing and cementing a reputation notable for his championship of several further unjustly neglected works, amongst them the Samuel Barber Piano Concerto – of which Philip gave both the French and Irish premieres – and Britten’s Diversions on a Theme for piano left hand and orchestra. Philip’s appearances in France have reinforced his knowledge, understanding and love for French piano music; it was with Britten’s masterpiece that Philip made his much-praised Proms debut in 1985 at the Royal Albert Hall with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, being invited back two years later to play Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This enjoyable disc is sure to win many more friends for this well-loved artist.

Alistair McGowan (piano)

Alistair McGowan makes a bigger impression with 'The Piano Album'. Best known for his BAFTA-winning comedy show, ‘Alistair McGowan’s Big Impression’, in which he delighted audiences nationwide with pinpoint-accurate impersonations of celebrities such as David Beckham, Gary Lineker and Jonathan Ross, Alistair McGowan is now preparing for his most demanding role of all – that of pianist - as he releases an album of solo piano works for Sony Classical. This debut album features McGowan performing several short classical pieces, all chosen and learned by the actor/impressionist (who could only ever play two pieces) but who then practised for up to six hours a day over a nine month period in his attempt to finally conquer this beautiful instrument, despite already being in his early fifties. Says McGowan:"By taking on the idea of making an album, I hope to encourage people of any age to play the piano, but perhaps particularly those at an age where it's easy to think that it's all too late”. McGowan had started out playing the piano as a boy, but gave it up after only two years in favour of tennis and football. He went on to train as an actor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and worked for many years on television, on radio and in the theatre (being nominated for an Olivier Award in 2006), as well as successfully performing around the country for almost thirty years as a stand-up comic. Having always yearned for the piano, in 2016, McGowan devised the one-man stage show, ‘Erik Satie's-faction’, based on the French composer’s comedic writings, letters and music, for which he had to learn to play some short piano pieces by Satie and Debussy as an integral part of the show - the first time he had ever played in public. Emboldened by this well-received first public experience, it was not long before he was enthusiastically identifying and learning other short pieces which he felt that he - and others with similarly limited playing experience - could realistically manage. McGowan notes: “I have become so passionate about the piano over the past three years. It has really taken me over and I have made the time to practise (time I never thought I had) with a few simple lifestyle changes. This album contains a wealth of beautiful music that I think anyone can tackle, given time, passion and determination. Learning to play the piano has been an incredible challenge – often frustrating - but, ultimately, hugely enjoyable and emotional. It’s so satisfying when you realise that you are improving daily. I hope this encourages everyone who harbours a secret ambition take up music -it really is never too late!”

Venetia Mundi Splendor

Venetia Mundi Splendor

Musica e Politica a Venezia tra Medioevo e Umanesimo

Oktoechos Ensemble, Lanfranco Menga

The Oktoechos ensemble, a sophisticated female vocal ensemble led by the specialist Lanfranco Menga, in this CD presents a program entirely dedicated to the union of music and politics in the Venice of the early fifteenth century, time of its greatest economic growth and territorial expansion. The naval power of the “Serenissima” and the consequent commercial vitality of the Republic inevitably created the preconditions for a parallel artistic growth, witnessed by the contributions of the greatest artists of the time alternating within the Palatine Basilica of St. Mark at the service of the Dogi and the bishops, composing a great deal of celebratory music that exalted their power and that of the city itself: the city “where the merchants were kings, where Saint Mark was, where the Dogi were used to marry the sea with a ring”.

G B Sammartini: Sonate per clavicembalo

G B Sammartini: Sonate per clavicembalo

Susanna Piolanti (harpsichord)

Giovanni Battista Sammartini, main exponent of the eighteenth century Milanese instrumental school, was not only a reference for local musicians, but also enjoyed international fame; he was “the most European character of the Milanese scene of the time” (G. Pestelli, 1982). A prominent figure in a complex era, witness and advocate of those stylistic and formal metamorphoses that marked the gradual transition from the late Baroque, heavily influenced by the violinistic school, to the mature gallant style anticipating the classicism by reaching an idiomatic accomplishment. The award-winning harpsichordist Susanna Piolanti performs this unpublished collection of sonatas mostly edited in London during the eighteenth century, in which the search for and the consolidation of a new language never ends: “I will, I will, but my harpsichord will kill me”, senior Sammartini answers to his customers’ requests. After all, the work of a composer always starts from the keyboard.

Accademia della Magnifica Comunita

Forgotten as a composer in spite of her remarkable skills and obvious appreciation of her contemporaries - including Amadeus Mozart and JC Bach - Maddalena Lombardini was grown in Venice in a small bourgeois family, and given her exceptional musical talent, at only seven she was admitted at at the school of the Hospital of the Mendicanti (one of the four major music education schools for girls who then served during the political and religious ceremonies of the city). At fourteen Maddalena is sent to study with the greatest master of her time, Giuseppe Tartini, who will remain a point of reference in her entire life: in fact it seems that on his advice Maddalena will marry another of his pupil, Ludovico Sirmen. She will then leave her work at the Mendicanti Hospital and started a lavish concert career in London, Dresden, Petersburg, and Paris, where she will perform and publish the six quartets included in this edition. The execution is entrusted to the splendor of the Academy of the Magnificent Community, under the guidance of Enrico Casazza.
