André Mathieu: Concerto No. 3

André Mathieu: Concerto No. 3

Gershwin:

An American in Paris, tone poem

Mathieu, A:

Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 25

Alain Lefèvre (piano)

This new album by the great pianist and composer Alain Lefevre unveils the results of three years of hard work by Jacques Marchand, George Nicholson and Alain Lefevre aimed at restoring Andre Mathieu’s famous Concerto No. 3. Presented as a world premiere in February 2017 in Buffalo, where it was performed by Alain Lefevre and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the renowned JoAnn Falletta, the reconstituted Concerto No. 3 was enthusiastically received by the audience. Recorded at those performances, the album Andre Mathieu: Concerto No. 3 accurately conveys the brilliance of Alain Lefevre and the enthusiasm of the musicians, aware as they were of sharing a highly emotional and one-of-a-kind moment. JoAnn Falletta had previously collaborated with Alain Lefevre in presenting works by Mathieu – in New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2013, among other settings. It was in the fall of 1942, 75 years ago, that young Quebec prodigy Andre Mathieu, just 13 years old and at the peak of his glory, began writing his Concerto No. 3, which he would finish the following summer. In 2008, George Nicholson discovered the original score of Andre Mathieu’s Concerto No. 3 written in the Quebec composer’s own hand. The differences, which were noteworthy, between this original score and the Concerto de Quebec, the well-known, modified, version of the work, were the starting point for an enormous undertaking aimed at restoring this masterwork of Mathieu’s. The new album also contains George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and premiered in 1928, the work translates into music the vivid impressions of an American visiting Paris, strolling the city streets and soaking up the exuberant atmosphere of the French capital.

Trios For Harp

Trios For Harp

Valérie Milot (harp), Stéphane Tétreault (cello) & Antoine Bareil (violin)

Valérie Milot, Stéphane Tétrault and Antoine Bareil, three young and well established musicians, are collaborating for the first time to carry out a major recording project. Focused primarily on French music from the first half of the 20th century, this CD reveals the subtle blend of sonorities formed by the harp, cello, and violin through the major works by Jacques Ibert and Henriette Renié. The trio also performs a dazzling, encore-worthy Passacaglia for violin and cello by Handel/Halvorsen and a sweet, introspective finale in the form of a transcription of a Schubert lied.

Croce: Motetti & Cantiones Sacrae

Croce: Motetti & Cantiones Sacrae

VOCES Suaves, Francesco Saverio Pedrini

Venice, July 1603: Giovanni Croce, known as ‘il Chiozzotto’, a priest at the church of Santa Maria Formosa, was appointed maestro di cappella of St Mark’s basilica, one of the most prestigious posts in the musical world of the time.

A controversial biography, many aspects of which have not yet been elucidated, and a musical output of excellent quality constitute the appeal of this composer born in Chioggia, who is still overshadowed today by his famous successors. Yet Giovanni Croce proves to be an extraordinary figure, halfway between the conservative Venetian school of Gioseffo Zarlino and the modernism of Claudio Monteverdi. He makes masterly use of double chorus and of such special devices as echo effects, while maintaining a fine transparency in his counterpoint that links him with classical polyphony.

Two exceptional young Swiss ensembles, the vocal group Voces Suaves (which has won several prizes for its first two recordings) and the instrumental ensemble Concerto Scirocco, combine here in the magnificent surroundings of the palatine basilica of Santa Barbara in Mantua, where they have the advantage of the outstanding Antegnati organ built in 1565, to honour Giovanni Croce and his contemporaries and introduce us to other aspects of the glorious musical activity at St Mark’s.

Monteverdi Madrigals Vols. 1-3

Monteverdi Madrigals Vols. 1-3

Cremona, Mantova & Venezia

A revolution of the senses!

A noble genre inherited from the Renaissance, the madrigal became with Monteverdi a veritable experimental laboratory. It accompanied the composer throughout his long life, as is demonstrated by this three-disc anthology of his finest madrigali. From Cremona to Venice by way of Mantua, Paul Agnew and Les Arts Florissants invite us to relive with them this major revolution in musical thought, the heir to a lofty humanism, which found its natural culmination in the nascent Baroque movement of the early seventeenth century.

The City Musick, William Lyons

“Why these are the city waits, who play every winter’s night through the streets to rouse each lazy drone to family duty. These are the topping tooters of the town, and have gowns, silver chains, and salaries, for playing “Lilliburlero” to my Lord Mayor’s horse through the city.” This 1709 reference to a professional band of musicians conjures the thriving city of London in the 16th and 17th centuries. The band’s sound is replicated on this release by the modern-day namesake The City Musick directed by foremost expert in the field William Lyons (who is also director of the Grammy-nominated Dufay Collective). The drones of dulcians and cornetts, sackbuts and shawms, evoke the era’s civic events, theatrical productions and liturgal service, paying homage to the unsung talents of the Waits from the period when their reputation was at its zenith.

The City Musick was formed to explore the diverse repertoire of civic and court wind players in 16th and 17th century Europe and is now firmly established as the premier renaissance wind band in the UK. After its debut USA tour in 2009, including a performance at the reconstructed Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia, the ensemble has performed for traditional feasts and ceremonies in the City of London, at the York Early Music Festival, and in Florence and Antwerp. The City Musick made their BBC Proms debut in 2012 with a performance of Venetian music in collaboration with I Fagiolini. The resulting Decca recording and that of the Striggio Mass, also involving the ensemble, have both met with great critical acclaim.

Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen

Most of the pieces on this CD was written before Prokofiev became vexed by ideological discussions, and they reflect his quest among different cultures. With the exception of the solo sonata, they were composed in the West. Only after he settled in Moscow in 1936 did he experience the tragic fate of the great composers and writers under the Stalinist system, revered one day and maligned the next. Rosanne: “There is something special about Prokofiev's music. You realise that each and every note is painstakingly put into place, which could appear to be almost distanced and mathematical, but nothing could be further from the truth, for his music touches the soul. The perfect balance between wonderful melodies and catching rhythmic passages is also something I find really fascinating.”
