Denhoff: Bach Variations, Op. 114

Denhoff: Bach Variations, Op. 114

Birgitta Wollenweber (piano)

I believe that great music always has a spiritual context, according to Michael Denhoff. His statement is not a direct reference to Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), though of course he places Bach in the highest echelon. Bach’s music is indisputably “great“, and he himself always confirmed that he composed in order to praise God. In the process he wrote a number of works that rise so far above the repertoire and formal canon of their time that they are rightly regarded as “timeless“ – “timeless“ not in terms of formal and technical details, but rather in their overall appearance. Examples include the Goldberg Variations (BWV 988), the Art of Fugue (BWV 1080) and the Six Suites for Violoncello Solo (BWV 1007–1012).

Michael Denhoff: When I heard the final recording of the Goldberg Variations by Glenn Gould, a wish grew inside me to create something comparably amazing and comprehensive ... someday ... but at the time, in 1981, I was 26 and not yet mature enough for such an ambitious undertaking. Only now, and quite hesitantly – and wracked with self- doubt – have I felt qualified for the task, but with 28 variations I intended to remain “modest“ behind Bach. Even so, it grew to contain 30 variations, since the theme adds a bass line and thus itself becomes a variation; the concluding repeat of the Sarabande, similar to Bach’s Aria in the Goldberg Variations, is a further variation; indeed, Bach’s exact sequence of notes appears, but here with octave leaps.

The pianist Birgitta Wollenweber has worked intensively with Michael Denhoff since 1996 – also as his duo partner. Whether giving solo recitals, collaborating as a chamber-music partner or appearing as a soloist with orchestra, she is active at home and abroad. She is a regular guest at inter national festivals and records for radio and TV. Her repertoire encompasses works from all periods, and her discography, 16 CDs to date, includes solo and chamber music by rediscovered composers. She studied in Detmold as well as with Peter Wallfisch at the Royal College of Music in London. She has received numerous awards and is a professor of piano and chair of the piano department at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. She teaches in Germany and elsewhere, gives courses and directs the concert series Klassik Um Eins (Classics at One) in Berlin and Klassik Um Sechs (Classics at Six) in Brandenburg.

Thomas Adès: String Quartets & Piano Quintet

Adès:

The Four Quarters

Piano Quintet

DoelenKwartet Rotterdam, Dimitri Vassilakis

Thomas Adès, born in London in 1971, he studied piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and read music at King’s College, Cambridge. Adès has won numerous awards, including the Léonie Sonning Music Prize and the Grawemeyer Award, of which he is the youngest ever recipient. His works have been established as a kind of “modern classic“, appearing several times on CD and entering the repertoire of many ensembles.

The range of reference in this and much of Adès’s best-known music has yielded for the composer a reputation as a kind of “postmodern ironist“, whose enormous technical gifts, some have argued, disguise a lack of real imag- ination and an overreliance on the music of others. But Adès’s musical idiom is always recognisably his own! Just as any composer’s musical material is shot through with conventions, habits and devices inherited from a range of traditions and practices, so too are Adès’s musical idioms.

It’s just that he wears his affections in some respects closer to his sleeve.

If in that respect Adès’s is a highly personal music, it is one which by virtue of its charm, skill and rigorous procedures, is capable of drawing us into its world of affections. It is this, above all, which endows his music with every bit the same kind of “just rightness” that one experiences in Chopin or Webern. And yet, unlike these composers, who always feel so fully at home in their material, with Adès one has more the sense of a figure who is constantly travelling. The DoelenKwartet, ranking among the leading quartets in the realm of contemporary classical music – with a repertoire of about 250 mainly contemporary works and compositions from the early 20th century –, enhanced by the exceptional pianist Dimitri Vassilakis from Ensemble Intercontemporain, interprets Adès’ works with passion, history and intensity – attributes that characterize Adès’ unique compository manuscript.

Udiverse

Udiverse

Fabrice Alleman & Chamber Orchestra

From the liner notes :

"This project is an adventure, probably the most important one in my life as a musician: I wanted to know who I am as an artist, a composer, a saxophonist and quite simply as a man. Ten years to think about it, including five years to develop it, and one additional year of recordings, post-production, mixing, design have created UDiverse (Unity in Diversity), a unique musical suite for soprano saxophone and chamber orchestra which brings together my roots, influences and sensitivity. But it is other people who help you to discover who you are.

I'm so grateful to Michel Herr for his total commitment, his humanity, his friendship and his talents as composer and arranger. Without him UDiverse would probably not exist. "

Pierre-Adrien Charpy

THE MUSIC BEHIND THE MUSIC / Monographic double album - Pierre-Adrien Charpy's music is an organic multifaceted music, through which run visible strata and unsuspected crevices, enlivened by surface currents and subterranean flows. His way of composing is characterized by stratification, working the depths, renewing formal milestones, employing the resources of creative constraint. The pieces presented in the first volume of this album belong to the composer’s collection of jewellery, his etchings, his small-scale works with the delicate wash of the watercolour or the precise impasto of the paintbrush. The second volume unfurls in one breath a concert-work which is nothing less than a panorama painted on fresh plaster, depicting an almost hallucinatory voyage in which the listener is invited to dance just as much as to meditate. This hour of music, a sequence of baroque, contemporary and traditional music, forms an innovative opening to the music of our time, into which some will venture who would otherwise never have dared. Didier Lamare

Collection AVEC on the record label is the fruit of the meeting of the creative worlds of the composer Pierre-Adrien Charpy, the soprano Raphaële Kennedy and the photographer and video artist Isabelle Françaix; it develops a collaboration in which music and image express themselves in a common space that encourages metamorphosis. It enables new creations to live alongside Early Music and folk music: interlacing textures, stratifying memory, dialoguing between different artistic disciplines.

Christ aux oliviers

Musiques Nouvelles & Choeur de Chambre Ishango

Pierre Bartholomée is a composer rooted in his time, inventive and keen to champion the responsibility of cultural figures (composers, performers, programmers, publishers, producers, etc.) towards music, our music, at the very heart of society.

A man-orchestra, Pierre strives to bring together the multiple actors of a single project. His discography with Cypres reveals the intensity of his production as both conductor and composer.

It is now sixty years that Pierre Bartholomée has been twenty: this birthday album gives me the opportunity of thanking this transmitter of memory, this man so keen to promote the creation of a peer. We have an indispensable archive, and there is homage to be paid.

The Marian Consort, Rory McCleery

The Marian Consort originally made its name with the music of the Renaissance. But the group has also worked regularly with living composers for a number of years. This programme of contemporary Marian anthems – many of them commissioned by the ensemble – celebrates a living, developing tradition where the new is always informed by the old, casting fresh, vital light on these ancient words.

Under its founder and director, Rory McCleery, the Marian Consort has given concerts throughout the UK and Europe, features regularly on BBC Radio 3, and is a former ‘Young Artist’ of The Brighton Early Music Festival. This is the their eighth recording for Delphian.

Choir of Merton College, Oxford & Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Benjamin Nicholas

The Choir of Merton College joins forces with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra for a recording of director Benjamin Nicholas’s favourite popular carols. Two of John Rutter’s most exquisite works are complemented by orchestral versions of wellloved traditional fare. From the ecstatic brass fanfares that introduce O come, all ye faithful and Hark! the herald angels sing to the intimate performances of Elizabeth Poston’s beautiful Jesus Christ the apple tree and Morten Lauridsen’s O magnum mysterium, Christmas old and new is celebrated with a fresh sense of all its magic and glory. The choir and orchestra loved making this recording, and it shows.

Boston Symphony Orchestra

The BSO’s 1969-70 season was a landmark year for the orchestra with the arrival of distinguished conductor William Steinberg and the start of their recording legacy with DG. The label immediately reinforced its commitment to the BSO, spearheading the build of a dedicated control room in the basement of Symphony Hall. DG’s Boston strategy also saw them bring the company’s top conductors to the BSO.

From the start, Deutsche Grammophon also committed to recording a wide repertoire with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players (founded in 1964 and the first chamber ensemble made up of a major orchestra’s principal players).

The marriage between DG and the BSO saw recordings made under Steinberg, Thomas, Abbado, Kubelik, and also under DG stalwart Eugen Jochum, and Boston’s own Leonard Bernstein under his new exclusive contract with DG. Steinberg’s dynamic young successor Seiji Ozawa further reinforced their dominance as the leading orchestra in America through a number of critically acclaimed recordings. DG’s current collaboration with Andris Nelsons and the BSO continues this remarkable recording legacy with Shostakovich’ complete symphonies.
