Barokksolistene, Bjarte Eike

'The Alehouse Sessions', curated and devised by Bjarte Eike, is an evolving insight into the music of the English 17th Century tavern. It shines light onto this tumultuous period through Purcell overtures, English sea shanties and Scandinavian folk songs, thrown in for good measure, brilliantly evoking the atmosphere of a raucous port pub in the 1690s. These sessions have already been hailed as "irresistible" [The Times], "superb" [The Scotsman] and "fabulously unrestrained" by The Guardian, "creating the effect of a late night jamming session", said BBC Music Magazine. "The signature of this project is the interaction on stage between the players and the audience...drawing its inspiration from the Shakespearian theatre where there was a direct communication between stage and hall", says Bjarte Eike. 'The 'Alehouse Sessions' will be on tour throughout 2017.

The soundtrack to Mel Gibson's 1995 multi-Oscar winning tale about 13th century Scottish knight Sir William Wallace, was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe. Braveheart is one of James Horner's most critically acclaimed film scores and contains some of his most haunting melodies. Horner's stirring score transports us back to the 13th century, drawing heavily on Celtic/Scottish influences to create a melancholic and emotional soundtrack, featuring bagpipes, atmospheric flutes, bodhran drums, orchestra and a spine-tingling boys’ choir.

Max Richter (piano & electronics) & Louisa Fuller / Natalia Bonner (violins)

After Songs from Before and The Blue Notebooks, DG is releasing the third in a row of Max Richter’s Retrospective catalogue – Infra, now on Vinyl and CD!

Scored for piano, electronics, and string quartet, Infra is an expansion of a 25-minute piece Richter wrote for a collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor and visual artist Julian Opie.

The original ballet was a response to the London bombings on 7/7. Richter explains: “The piece is about traveling, and in a way, [the songs] are quite existential, a meditation on the political state of London at that time and the tragedy of those events. We all knew people who had been affected by it or killed. Music is a social activity, and by definition, making any kind of statement is a political act.”

The release follows Max Richter’s latest album “Three Worlds: music from Woolf Works”, which likewise features music from his score to Wayne McGregor’s ballet Woolf Works.

With Infra Max Richter also responded to, amongst other things, Winterreise, Schubert’s masterful, mournful gothic era song cycle based on Wilhelm Muller’s bleak monodramatic poems set in a brutal winter about a questing, misunderstood wanderer whose heart, and memory, is frozen in grief.

Kate Lindsey (mezzo), Baptiste Trotignon (piano)

Closing the distance between classical music and Broadway, between the old world and the new, this album is born out of a stunning encounter between two performers. Kate Lindsey is an opera star whose career is skyrocketing. She has stunned audiences with her performances of Mozart and Purcell, but grew up steeped in the music of Broadway, from Gershwin to Cole Porter. Baptiste Trotignon is a multie award-winning jazz pianist who plays with big names like Brad Mehldau or Tom Harrell, but who has a long-held interest in classical music, even composing a piano concerto for Nicholas Angelich. Together, they have produced a rich and varied programme around the songs of Kurt Weill, from Nanna's Lied to trouble Man, as well as the classics from The Threepenny Opera and Lost in the Stars. This journey through three European languages brings the listener to the very beginnings of jazz, and features all-new arrangements and deft improvisations by pianist Baptiste Trotignon. Lindsey and Trotignon also pay homage to three composers who, like Weill, all emigrated to the United States: Alma Mahler, Zemlinsky and Korngold. London-based American mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey joins Alpha Classics for several recordings over the coming years.

“Lindsey never sounds as if she’s dragging her voice anywhere it doesn’t want to go. She is incisive with text, in German and English alike...All told, Lindsey finds a lot more to Weill than just rasping dames in fishnet tights.” The Times, 19th May 2017 ****

Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Arnold Kasar: Einfluss - Vinyl Edition

Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Arnold Kasar: Einfluss - Vinyl Edition

Hans-Joachim Roedelius is one of the forefathers of cosmic music and “Krautrock”. He is a pioneer and luminary in the history of 20th-century ambient and electronic music, and has been named as an influencer on their musical output by stars like David Bowie and Brian Eno. With his bands Cluster and Harmonica, Roedelius played a major role in the development of these movements in the 1960s and 70s.

Roedelius was formed by the political and social uprising of the late sixties and the seventies. Today, he is able to look back on more than a hundred releases and collaborations ranging from his longtime companion Dieter Moebius to acclaimed international artists such as Brian Eno or younger musicians like Tim Story. Roedelius released his autobiography in 2016: see http://bio.roedelius.com/

Arnold Kasar is almost thirty years younger than Roedelius, he is a child of Berlin´s crossover scene of the 1990s. He broke the line between electronic dance music and jazz, he played with Micatone, Nylon and Friedrich Lichtenstein. As a session musician, arranger and producer, he contributed to many releases of the influential Berlin label Sonar Kollektiv.

Kasar is a classically trained pianist, Roedelius did not even learn to read music. Their approach is as different as it can be, yet they share an openness to musical forms and their collaborative partners.

About the Album:

In October 2016 Arnold Kasar set out for Baden in Lower Austria, where Joachim Roedelius is living with his family, to record their collaboration.

Within three days more than thirty pieces were produced. For the two artists the recording was not about technology, not about precession, not about structure, but about flow.

Thus the title “Einfluss” is a combination of Ein (One) and Fluss (Flux/Flow), meaning both the influence both artists had on each other in the recording sessions as well as that the pieces were recorded in one steady flow.

With delicate piano themes and atmospheric electronic sounds, they developed a unique chemistry.

In their joint sessions, both played the piano and Kasar the electronic instruments.

About this Austrian live recording from June 1980 GRAMOPHONE said: “This is a performance of high quality.
