Víkingur Ólafsson (piano)

Siggi String Quartet

Read our exclusive interview with Víkingur Ólafsson here.

This is a tribute to the master of minimal music, legendary Philip Glass, who turned 80 on 31.01.2017

A year ago Philip Glass handpicked some pianists to perform all of his Etudes together at the Barbican in London.

Víkingur Ólafsson was one of them and according to the press he was “the highlight of the evening” (Sean and Heard International).

The Financial Times claimed: “Best of all was Ólafsson in the supersensitive stillness of Etude 5”

Following on in the tradition of their recordings of Philip Glass’ music with Gidon Kremer and Daniel Hope, Deutsche Grammophon has now chosen the music of this founding father of minimal music for the debut album on the label of rising star pianist Víkingur Ólafsson.

While Kremer’s acclaimed recording of the violin concerto was made in 1992 at the peak of the physical CD era, this new recording, presented with the large DG cartouche, speaks both to the core physical audience as well as to the new, young, digital, already strong and fast-growing minimalist streaming audience.

Philip Glass’ top three tracks have clocked up over 15M streams on Spotify so far – EACH!

Víkingur Ólafsson is an up-and-coming visionary pianist not only of technical sublimity but also of remarkable entrepreneurial abilities.

He serves as Artistic Director to both the Vinterfest in Sweden and the Reykjavík Midsummer Music.

Besides his growing career as a traditional concert pianist Víkingur Ólafsson has also collaborated with a range of contemporary composers and artists like Olafur Arnalds and Björk.

In a similarly experimental vein this album includes Reworks besides the originals for solo piano in a captivating string quartet arrangement

Recorded in Reykjavik's Harpa, an impressive, state-of-the-art concert hall with a famous glass exterior, which was designed by Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson and put Iceland on the map of architectural highlights after completion in 2011.

The production was and is followed by Icelandic TV and culminates in a meeting with Philip Glass and Víkingur Ólafsson in New York, resulting in a documentary.

Haydn 2032 Volume 4 - Il Distratto - Vinyl Edition

Haydn 2032 Volume 4 - Il Distratto - Vinyl Edition

Cimarosa:

Il maestro di cappella

Haydn:

Symphony No. 60 in C major 'Il distratto'

Symphony No. 70 in D major

Symphony No. 12 in E major

The fourth volume of the Haydn2032 project thrusts into the limelight one of the most important stock characters in the theatre of sounds and words, the Kapellmeister, and explores some glamorous and (in)glorious moments in the career of Maestro Haydn. It features three symphonies by the "Shakespeare of Music" - one of which is even associated with ana ctual play. This bears teh title "Sinfonia in C per la commedia intitolata il distratto" and consists of an overture, four entra'actes, and a finale to be played at the end of the performance. Also on this release is a large-scale buffalo scene by his colleague Cimarosa. Il maestro di cappella is a witty and ironic parody, in which a member of the "old school" of musicians tries to improve the ensemble playing of his orchestra. To his chagrin, the players do react, but in extremely undisciplined fashion: they are distracted, make false entries and disagree musically...

Bach: Motetten BWV 225-230 - Vinyl Edition

Bach: Motetten BWV 225-230 - Vinyl Edition

Bach, J S:

Motets, BWV225-230

FIRST VINYL RELEASE ON PHI!

To launch Philippe Herreweghe’s birthday year, we turn the spotlight once more on one of his most accomplished recordings: Bach’s Motets BWV 225-230. Recorded in 2011 in the splendid acoustics of the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin, this interpretation is accompanied by period instruments and is the result of intense reflection concerning the performing forces: Philippe Herreweghe sometimes uses a small number of singers per part, sometimes a larger group, according to the needs of the motet in question. He sees these pieces in terms of continuous research, in which ‘several approaches are possible and even necessary if one wishes to make this marvellous music sound its best, and especially for a recording’.

For the greater pleasure of the eyes and ears of turntable lovers, these masterpieces by the Kantor of Leipzig now appear in a novel incarnation, subtly combining the label’s new and modern graphic line with the timeless style of the vinyl format.

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake - Vinyl Edition

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake - Vinyl Edition

Tchaikovsky:

Swan Lake, Op. 20

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, with its story of magical transformations, love and deceit and its irresistibly melodic score, defines Romantic ballet. It is no coincidence that conductor André Previn has described himself as “a complete romantic” and that this recording has become a classic of the catalogue. When it was made in 1976, Previn had spent the best part of a decade as Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. With their combination of show business flair and deep sensitivity, he and the LSO’s players proved to be the ideal team for Tchaikovsky’s glorious ballet music.

Edward Gardner conducts Holst & R. Strauss - Vinyl Edition

Edward Gardner conducts Holst & R. Strauss - Vinyl Edition

Holst:

The Planets, Op. 32

Strauss, R:

Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30

For its very first album on Chandos, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain devotes its characteristic energy and musical mastery to an explosive programme that transcends daily life and earthly experience. It is helped by the enthusiastic, encouraging, and experienced baton of Edward Gardner as well as by the sumptuous yet detailed acoustic of Symphony Hall, Birmingham, all fully revealed in this surround-sound recording.

Their performance of Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra and Holst’s The Planets is already a point of reference in the UK after the immensely successful Prom concert that preceded the recording. The concert’s five-star review in The Daily Telegraph praised in particular the orchestra’s ‘great attack and complete absence of anything routine’, while The Guardian emphasised the great performance of the orchestra in this ‘graceful and evocative programme’, especially the ‘depth and richness of sound that belied their youth’.

This unique album is a first milestone in what promises to be a superb discography for the NYO.

Special notice: this album will also be released on SACD.

Vincent Segal (cello) & Koki Nakano (piano)

Lift' is an album in which Young Japanese pianist/composer KOKI Nakano constructs his own musical world. Piano and cello combine in a selection of beautiful pieces, where Nakano draws on his classical background whilst weaving in other influences, using repetitive and rhythmic elements of jazz and creating layers of sound inspired by pop and electronic music.

Vincent and Koki worked on the album in a tiny studio in the Les Buttes Chaumont neighbourhood of Paris, finding a way to communicate through music, as Vincent describes it: "it's a wonderful thing to spend hours rehearsing the music of Koki Nakano without being able to talk to him in any serious way: no Japanese, no French, no English, no diplomacy, just a territory – the art of Koki Nakano".

Koki Nakano was born in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1988 and studied at the prestigious music school Toho Gakue and at Tokyo's University of Arts where he formed electro-rock band Gas Law whilst also composing classical pieces for fashion shows and ad campaigns. He now lives in Paris and performs all over the world. Vincent Segal is a conservatoire musician with a highly successful career. Born in Reims, he studied at the National Music Academy of Lyon and is well-known for his many outstanding collaborations with artists such as Ballake Sissoko, Elvis Costello, Carlinhos Brown, Sting, Salif Keita and now, Koki Nakano.
