Haydn 2032 Volume 4 - Il Distratto - Vinyl Edition

Haydn 2032 Volume 4 - Il Distratto - Vinyl Edition

Cimarosa:

Il maestro di cappella

Haydn:

Symphony No. 60 in C major 'Il distratto'

Symphony No. 70 in D major

Symphony No. 12 in E major

The fourth volume of the Haydn2032 project thrusts into the limelight one of the most important stock characters in the theatre of sounds and words, the Kapellmeister, and explores some glamorous and (in)glorious moments in the career of Maestro Haydn. It features three symphonies by the "Shakespeare of Music" - one of which is even associated with ana ctual play. This bears teh title "Sinfonia in C per la commedia intitolata il distratto" and consists of an overture, four entra'actes, and a finale to be played at the end of the performance. Also on this release is a large-scale buffalo scene by his colleague Cimarosa. Il maestro di cappella is a witty and ironic parody, in which a member of the "old school" of musicians tries to improve the ensemble playing of his orchestra. To his chagrin, the players do react, but in extremely undisciplined fashion: they are distracted, make false entries and disagree musically...

Mozart: Sinfonien - Vinyl Edition

Mozart: Sinfonien - Vinyl Edition

Mozart:

Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K543

Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K550

Most of Suitner’s Mozart recordings with the Dresden Staatskapelle were made after his time as conductor there had come to an end, in the summer of 1964, when he moved to direct the State Opera in Berlin. “I have been in charge of many recordings, and the execution was seldom so smooth. It was all so relaxed and easy-going. We always felt the joy of musicmaking,” producer Heinz Wegner remembers. At the same time, Suitner’s Mozart was stylistically anything but arbitrary: “He naturally had a concept and he knew how to implement it, so that his interpretations – as if influenced by some enigmatic powers – always generated a specially ‘natural’ listening experience. I never experienced that in Mozart with any other conductor.”

Otmar Suitner’s great success as Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden remains a fascinating phenomenon to this day. Seldom has a young conductor fulfilled expectations of him in such a brilliant manner. When, in 1960 at just 38 years of age, he took up his new post, few people would have believed that fifty years later memories would still regularly be re-awakened of his Mozart recordings.

Producer Heinz Wegner explains: “What we hear on this recording seemed to emerge as if by magic. When he conducted Mozart, something seemed to happen to the music to the extent that it just seemed he had captured the quintessence of the composer.”

Ravel:

La Valse

Boléro

Ma Mère l'Oye

Pavane pour une infante défunte

Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester, Günther Herbig

Günther Herbig, Principal Conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, now the Konzerthaus orchestra conducts Ravel.

Solo flautist Richard Waage, an orchestra member from 1961 to 2002, valued the work ethic of his Principal Conductor –. “With Herbig things were ‘more open’, when you had worked your way into a certain context, than with other conductors. He allowed you more freedom. You could offer more as an individual. I liked that a lot.” On one occasion when he had the opportunity to see Herbig’s conducting score, he was impressed by how every harmonic step was marked, so that the score bore traces of a musicological analysis. “This was the mathematical impulse” characteristic, he judged, of Herbig’s way of working.

This architectural, formally structured approach to the music fitted well with the recording technique of those days, which did not allow breakdown into such small steps as today. Arches of tension thus sound more plausible, because there are fewer pieces to put together. “When you have long takes, of course that makes it all more organic,” concludes Richard Waage. It will surely have been these working conditions and the conductor’s specific style that made it possible, even in such an unpretentious piece as the Pavane, “to bring out the character of mourning”, which so moved Jürgen Kögel and other participants.

Stravinsky: The Firebird & Britten: Sinfonia da Requiem - Vinyl Edition

Stravinsky: The Firebird & Britten: Sinfonia da Requiem - Vinyl Edition

Britten:

Sinfonia da Requiem, Op. 20

Stravinsky:

The Firebird Suite

Born in Niederpoyritz near Dresden in 1910, Rudolf Kempe was trained as a pianist and oboist at the orchestral school of the Sächsische Staatskapelle in Dresden between 1924 and 1928.

After posts as an orchestra musician in Dortmund and Leipzig he made his debut as a conductor in Leipzig in 1935. After further conducting posts in Chemnitz and Weimar he was brought to Dresden in 1949 by Joseph Keilberth and made General Music Director of the Dresden Opera and Staatskapelle the following year.

Semper’s famous opera house lay in ruins, like the whole of the city centre, whereas the evacuated Staatskapelle had survived the war and the post-war years largely intact.

Kempe later recalled: “For my career, those were the happiest years of my life – the last glimpse of ‘Paradise’: with opera, concerts and chamber music all year round in the same place.”

Eterna producer Dieter-Gerhardt Worm considers Rudolf Kempe to be one of the most significant conductors of the twentieth century and regards the recordings he made with the Dresden Staatskapelle as ideal: “There have surely been very few conductors who have fathomed the nature of the Staatskapelle so deeply and so widely exploited this orchestra’s potential as Rudolf Kempe. In the studio, he was a highly effective ‘worker’.

Kempe was the only conductor I have known who did not explain to the musicians what he wanted of the orchestra but simply showed them.” Rudolf Kempe’s early death prevented the implementation of numerous planned projects with the Staatskapelle. When the present recording of Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet suite and Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem was made in January 1976 none of the participants had an inkling that it would be Kempe’s last.

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition & Night on Bald Mountain - Vinyl Edition

Mussorgsky:

Pictures at an Exhibition

A Night on the Bare Mountain

Igor Markevitch enjoys a legendary reputation. He was successful both as a conductor of leading orchestras and as a composer and (university) lecturer. His pupils include Daniel Barenboim, Herbert Blomstedt and Wolfgang Sawallisch. In his autobiography Die Musik – mein Leben (music, my life) Barenboim recalls that Igor Markevitch had taught him “a personal, highly individual style of conducting”. In his Salzburg course he was “completely preoccupied with the clarity of the sound, the clarity of the rhythm and the clarity of the gesture”.

In many ways it was these characteristics that Markevitch introduced to the collective consciousness of the orphaned late-60s Gewandhaus orchestra. 1968 had seen Václav Neumann resign his position as conductor in protest at the suppression of the “Prague Spring” and its echo in the publications of East Germany’s ruling Socialist Unity Party. Despite his short term of office, Neumann was able to advance from the Konwitschny era with a new approach to programming and a new style – by means of new or additional core repertoire and a leaner, more highly articulated sound. Markevitch was the ideal person to continue this task.

Markevitch laid down his understanding of maintaining tradition through renewal with his 1973 Eterna recording of a work that is one of the world’s best known: Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in Maurice Ravel’s orchestration. Ravel’s version has clearly acquired more of a patina than the original piano version written half a century earlier, as even a first hearing of Markevitch’s recording proves. His interpretation suggest an imagined reorchestration of Mussorgsky’s work – rough and angular rather than polished and elegant. Without any patina. There is another work which was recorded for this production – Mussorgsky‘s symphonic poem Night on Bald Mountain.

Max Richter (piano & electronics) & Louisa Fuller / Natalia Bonner (violins)

After Songs from Before and The Blue Notebooks, DG is releasing the third in a row of Max Richter’s Retrospective catalogue – Infra, now on Vinyl and CD!

Scored for piano, electronics, and string quartet, Infra is an expansion of a 25-minute piece Richter wrote for a collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor and visual artist Julian Opie.

The original ballet was a response to the London bombings on 7/7. Richter explains: “The piece is about traveling, and in a way, [the songs] are quite existential, a meditation on the political state of London at that time and the tragedy of those events. We all knew people who had been affected by it or killed. Music is a social activity, and by definition, making any kind of statement is a political act.”

The release follows Max Richter’s latest album “Three Worlds: music from Woolf Works”, which likewise features music from his score to Wayne McGregor’s ballet Woolf Works.

With Infra Max Richter also responded to, amongst other things, Winterreise, Schubert’s masterful, mournful gothic era song cycle based on Wilhelm Muller’s bleak monodramatic poems set in a brutal winter about a questing, misunderstood wanderer whose heart, and memory, is frozen in grief.

Bach: Motetten BWV 225-230 - Vinyl Edition

Bach: Motetten BWV 225-230 - Vinyl Edition

Bach, J S:

Motets, BWV225-230

FIRST VINYL RELEASE ON PHI!

To launch Philippe Herreweghe’s birthday year, we turn the spotlight once more on one of his most accomplished recordings: Bach’s Motets BWV 225-230. Recorded in 2011 in the splendid acoustics of the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin, this interpretation is accompanied by period instruments and is the result of intense reflection concerning the performing forces: Philippe Herreweghe sometimes uses a small number of singers per part, sometimes a larger group, according to the needs of the motet in question. He sees these pieces in terms of continuous research, in which ‘several approaches are possible and even necessary if one wishes to make this marvellous music sound its best, and especially for a recording’.

For the greater pleasure of the eyes and ears of turntable lovers, these masterpieces by the Kantor of Leipzig now appear in a novel incarnation, subtly combining the label’s new and modern graphic line with the timeless style of the vinyl format.
