Tide is a composite of pieces for three solo instruments (clarinet, oboe d'amore and cello), newly composed by James Weeks. It is given here on CD1, and the three solo works are on CD2. Each is in its own right a virtuoso piece and played by leading instrumentalists Andrew Sparling (clarinet), Christopher Redgate (oboe d'amore) and Anton Lukoszevieze (cello). Both individually and together these compositions create a fascinating sound world which seem to be born of nature. The works are split onto two discs at the composer's request but, given the total playing time, the set is sold at the price of 1 CD. |

| | | Joseph Phibbs: The Canticle of The Rose and other works
Joseph Phibbs studied at The Purcell School, King's College London, and Cornell University, and his teachers have included Param Vir, Harrison Birtwistle and Steven Stucky. His works have been performed by leading ensembles including the London Sinfonietta, Britten Sinfonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, and National Symphony Orchestra (Washington). Since 2003 Phibbs has combined his composing career with the editing and promoting of Britten's music, and he is a director of the Britten Estate. He was appointed to teach composition at Wells Cathedral School in 2008 and is currently a visiting member of staff at The Purcell School and King's College London. The Canticle of the Rose, the centrepiece of this recording, sets a series of poems by Edith Sitwell for soprano and string quartet (including one which also appeared in Walton's Facade) ranging from the foreboding (We are the darkness) to the frivolous (Through gilded trellises). It is one of a series for voice with string quartet commissioned by Sir Nicholas Goodison. From Shore to Shore combines the countertenor voice of Michael Chance with guitar, and was commissioned by guitarist James Boyd with funding from the Arts Council England’s National Lottery scheme to broaden the contemporary repertoire for voice and guitar. Premiered at Aldeburgh in 2012, it sets a series of old and new poems on the subject of the sea. Contrasting with these vocal works are Flex - a vivid work for piano, flute, viola and cello - and the short string quartet Agea, dedicated to George Vass of Presteigne Festival. |

| | | A Parry Collection
A new release featuring a selection of Hubert Parry’s organ music, played on the historic 19th-century William Hill organ in the Chapel of Eton College – the school where Parry was educated as a boy. The works are played by David Goode, current organist of Eton College, in his first recording for Regent. The recording contains all of the large-scale works Parry wrote for the organ, together with a selection of smaller-scale Chorale Preludes on well-known hymn tunes. The wonderful Romantic Hill organ at Eton (recently restored to its original tonal specification) is the ideal vehicle for Parry’s organ works, and is set in a glorious acoustic. David Goode was a music scholar at Eton College, and then organ scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. From 1996 to 2001 he was Sub-Organist at Christ Church, Oxford. He won the top prizes awarded at the 1997 St Alban’s Interpretation Competition, and the Recital Gold Medal at the 1998 Calgary Competition. |

In the course of his career, which began on 25 January 1945 with Enzo in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda and ended on 3 December 1974 with Canio in Pagliacci, American Tenor Richard Tucker appeared in 344 performances at the old Met, 160 in the new house and 230 on tour. The only other tenors to have had longer careers were his predecessor Giovanni Martinelli and, later, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. In an affectionate foreword that he contributed to James Drake’s biography of the greatest American tenor, Pavarotti asked: “What made Richard Tucker such a phenomenon? First and foremost were his voice and technique. His voice was not only beautiful – shimmering, silvery, and very powerful – but also incredibly enduring. For thirty years his voice remained youthful and vibrant, and his technique as close to perfect as one can get.” The consistency with which he sang over a period of more than three decades is little short of miraculous, a point underscored by the recordings assembled here, which date from 1947 to 1967. |

| | | Bruckner: The Mature Symphonies (Symphony No. 5)
Recorded live at Philharmonie Berlin on 21 June 2010. The Süddeutsche Zeitung summed up this highly acclaimed performance of Bruckner's monumental Fifth Symphony by saying: “Both Bruckner’s belief in God, as it majestically wells up out of the chorale of the Fifth, and his deeply tragic world view, collide with one another in Barenboim’s interpretation”. The operatic experience of the conductor was almost tangible, revealing the “sheer dramatic instrumental battle between Bruckner’s God and the Devil – between heaven and hell – without betraying Bruckner’s unerring sense of striking proportions.” The release of this “contrapuntal masterpiece” (as Bruckner, not without pride, referred to this work) is part of Daniel Barenboim’s Bruckner cycle with the renowned Staatskapelle Berlin.
