Additionally this BD includes a concert of the piano solo and chamber music pieces, all filmed in Beijing.

The Yellow River Concerto, a large-scale, highly virtuosic piano concerto with colourful sound scales, is juxtaposed with miniature pieces for piano solo and with chamber pieces, each combining the piano with traditional Chinese instruments.

Though all the pieces were written in the early 20th century, most of them are based on much older sources, merging traditional Chinese melodies and idioms with the Western classical music tradition – the result is music of astonishing beauty and ease that will strongly appeal to a broad audience.

Introducing the new album from German composer-producer Sven Helbig, who has worked with Rammstein, Pet Shop Boys, Snoop Dogg, Polarkreis 18 and German rapper Sido. Helbig’s music has been compared to Einaudi, Reich, Richter, Glass, and other accessible contemporary composers.

Pocket Symphonies are twelve symphonic pieces in the form of songs. Short, infectious, beautifully melodic, and yet with the immensity and depth of symphonic-like works, Helbig draws his inspiration from centuries of power and glory. Helbig’s emotional symphonic images for orchestra and piano are closely connected to his life, experiences, aspirations and also the voids between epochs, systems and continents.

This recording is the second in a two-volume series of transcriptions and paraphrases for solo piano of music by Tchaikovsky, most of which are receiving their first recordings; volume one (Divine Art DDA25093) concerns orchestral concert works and operatic music; the second is of his ballets. He himself has long been recognised as a master of piano writing, the most famous example being his Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23, famously pronounced unplayable (and worthless) by the great pianist Nikolai Rubinstein but which has become one of the best loved and most performed of all piano concertos. Tchaikovsky made piano versions of his own works, mostly for four hands, and also commissioned transcriptions by trusted friends and colleagues and approved paraphrases of his works by an admired piano virtuoso such as Paul Pabst, both of which genres are represented on this recording.
