Gramophone Classical Music Guide

“For lovers of organ sound this disc is an absolute treasure. Perpignan's sumptuous Cavaillé- Coll isn't an organ of memorable solo stops but of deliciously blended, exquisitely balanced choruses. Full organ is warm and robust while its plentiful soft-stops have a subtlety and charm which, even in the face of the omnipresent action clatter, this recording captures with almost magical delicacy. The fourth of the Suite de six pièces, an Andantino in E minor, is lent distinction by the utter charm of the contrasting soft flute and string choruses, while the first of the Trois pièces dances across the manuals revealing tantalising glimpses of colour richly enhanced by the atmospheric acoustic of Perpignan's cathedral.
All this is superbly captured in Priory's rich, mellow recording.
In his deft handling of the instrument and his keen sense of colour, Brooks proves that there's much more to organ playing than big virtuoso gestures. Which may be as well since there's little scope for such things here. Not only do all 10 pieces on this disc completely avoid the virtuoso and emotional excesses of Liszt, Widor and Vierne, but none stretches much over 10 minutes in duration. With the exception of the captivating Rhapsodie sur des airs catalans, all are relatively youthful works revealing a composer with a keen sense of structure and a penchant for contrapuntal argument. A most attractive release.”
