Götterdämmerung: excerpts

Siegfried Idyll

"It will be no surprise to anyone who knows Schuricht's Bruckner that these are flowing, beautifully balanced, serious readings. I don't know any quite like them. As I listen to them, it seems to me that there is no other way to do justice to Wagner's noble genius. Whether it is in the intimate tenderness of the Siegfried Idyll as warm as Walter (but better proportioned) or Solti (but more relaxed), or the sheer luxury of the Tristan Prelude, this is exalted music-making." - American Record Guide

This assemblage of Wagner excerpts from the archives (XVI, the Schuricht Edition) of conductor Carl Schuricht (1880-1967) traverses sixteen years of work with the SouthWest German Radio Stuttgart, the earliest inscriptions being the 29 April 1950 Tristan Prelude; the latest the Parsifal Act I and Act III sequences from 17-19 March 1966. The Twilight of the Gods excerpts from 28 September 1955 are particularly powerful, with Siegfried’s Funeral March in towering motion against the Valhalla motif in the trumpets. The Rhine Journey is no less plastic and arched, with the vocal lines preserved right up to Brunnhilde’s high C from Zu Neuen Thaten.

"From the same day of recording comes the chamber version of A Siegfried Idyll, which permits the flute, oboe, and low horns immediacy of impact on the amblings of our Nibelungen hero. The Parsifal Act I Prelude is cast in the same expansive mold we hear in renditions by Schuricht’s contemporaries Klemperer, Knappertsbusch, Walter, and Furtwaengler. The Good Friday Spell (23 September 1954) from Parsifal projects a deeply burnished, rich ambiance, with the strings and winds in pungent, incisive form, the oboe ravishing. The Act III Finale lacks the chorus, but the alchemical mix of winds, horns, and harp is superbly magical. Schuricht’s is a lustrous Wagner, eminently vocalized in the instrumental renditions, and equally notable for the clarity of orchestral detail. Himmel hoch!" Gary Lemco on www.audaud.com

Orchestral suite from Parsifal

Introducing the “Stuttgart Sound”! Sir Roger Norrington is creating a revolution in orchestral performance practice. From looking into the past, and as a result of his insights regarding the history of performance practice, Norrington has created a unique performance model for the 20th century! Abandoning the thick sonic carpeting of vibrato strings in favor of a cleaner, more defined texture, Norrington and the Stuttgarters perform Wagner and Tchaikovsky as you have never heard them performed before! This is certain to be a disc that will be actively discussed in the international musical press and be sought out by collectors seeking a new vision for the standard Romantic repertoire.

Bruckner:

Symphony No. 7 in E Major

Wagner:

Tristan und Isolde: Prelude & Liebestod

Bruckner's admiration for the music of Richard Wagner was legendary. Beginning with the Third Symphony (the so called "Wagner" Symphony by Bruckner himself), the shadow of the opera composer's significance is felt time and again in Bruckner's works. When news of Wagner's death reached Bruckner, he was inspired to compose the C-sharp minor theme of the Adagio to honor the great musician's passing. The symphony was not only an artistic success but was the composer's greatest public triumph. Schuricht's handling of this massive score is exemplary and essential to anyone interested in a pure interpretation of Bruckner's music.

A very special boxed set documenting the artistry of one of the 20th century’s greatest conductors. Includes a special bonus disc including Schuricht in rehearsal.

“There’s no question that if you admire Schuricht then you will be intrigued to hear those performances that stand as an appendix to his Parisian cycle of the Beethoven symphonies...This may be a specialist box but it continues the fine archival work that Hänssler is carrying out on behalf of the conductor.” MusicWeb International, 1st July 2013

Joseph Schwarz Sings Arias by Verdi, Wagner, Leoncavallo & Meyerbeer

Joseph Schwarz

Joseph Schwarz ideally combined classical Italian "belcanto style" with emotional intensity, he belongs to the greatest baritones of the 20th century.

His is a gloriously vibrant, warm and dark-colored voice of outstanding quality. His legato and resonant mezza voce, his musical expression and flexibility are remarkable. His vast repertoire included all baritone roles in German, Italian and French operas.

This historical recording has been remastered from the original tapes and illustrates Stokowski’s advocacy for “New Music.”

“Adroit advocacy for new music on Disc 1 coupled with performances of 19th-century works that are so elaborately inflected and hyper-glamorous as to leave the German orchestra in near disarray.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2009

Leo Slezak Sings Arias by Wagner, Verdi and Meyerbeer

Leo Slezak Sings Arias by Wagner, Verdi and Meyerbeer

Leo Slezak

Leo Slezak was one of the most celebrated tenors at the Vienna Court Opera. Like many singers of his time, he was not limited to a particular set of roles. Today we would need at least three different singers to cover the range of Slezak's repertoire! Only a few months after his first appearance in Vienna his career as a recording artist began. He recorded more than 450 sides from 1901 until 1937. His voice can be described as a lyric-dramatic tenor, characterized by a remarkable mezza voce and a wonderful head register. His voice was very well suited to the early recording equipment.

Original recordings 1905, 1907, 1909, 1912, 1913, 1923, 1928
