Steinbacher records Strauss
Following their successful partnership on the Brahms Sonatas in 2011, it's been confirmed that Arabella Steinbacher and American-Latvian pianist Robert Kulek are set for another collaboration on Pentatone: in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss's birth, they will record his Violin Sonata in E flat Op. 18 (written in 1887/8 and inspired by the composer's new love for Paulina de Ahna, who would shortly become his wife) alongside César Franck's evergreen Sonata in A.
The daughter of a vocal coach and a soprano, Steinbacher has a special affinity with Strauss (her parents even named her after one of his operas!), and she and Kulek have been performing the Sonata in recital together for several years now, so this promises to be a very special contribution to the composer's birthday celebrations.
Due for release in September.

Before she turns to Strauss, Steinbacher has another disc in the pipeline: the last three Mozart concertos, with the Lucerne Festival Strings under Daniel Dodd. She's been performing these works since the tender age of eight, so we can't wait to hear her mature thoughts! Out 19th May.

Steinbacher and Kulek's recording of the complete Brahms sonatas and FAE Sonata was praised by Classic FM Magazine for its 'velvet-gloved tenderness and affection' and by BBC Music Magazine for the 'richness and clarity of texture' of Kulek's playing.

Recorded with Marek Janowski and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin when she was 27, Steinbacher's debut disc on Pentatone won her a Building a Library recommendation and a Gramophone Editor's Choice, with The Guardian hailing her playing as 'supremely accomplished and refined'.
