Coming Soon, Kirill Karabits records Prokofiev

Kirill Karabits records ProkofievAs excellent reviews flood in for their Schubert and Strauss concerts last week, we hear that Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will be heading back to The Lighthouse in Poole on Tuesday to start work on recording the third instalment in their Prokofiev series on Onyx Classics: the Fourth (in its 1930 version) and Fifth Symphonies, plus the comparatively rare early symphonic poem Dreams (1910).

Vol. 3 will be released in June, and the final recording in the cycle - including the later 1947 revision of the Fourth Symphony, the Sixth Symphony, and a 'symphonic movement' (written when the composer was just 11) - is set to follow in November. With previous volumes receiving praise for their 'sensitivity and panache' (The Daily Telegraph on Symphony No. 1) and 'rich, dark “Russian” sound and nimble virtuosity' (The Times on Nos. 3 & 7, which was also a Gramophone Editor's Choice and a Presto Disc of the Year), these two volumes are surely ones to watch!

Previous volumes in the Karabits-Bournemouth Prokofiev series

The inaugural volume in the series was unanimously well-received: The Guardian commended the 'truly terrifying yet detailed performance' of No. 3 and the 'unnervingly bleak' account of No. 7, whilst Gramophone's David Gutman reflected that 'I don't think I have heard this score rendered with greater sophistication'.

Released in November 2014, the second instalment garnered praise for its 'unrivalled clarity and balance' (Gramophone), with The Daily Telegraph observing that Karabits 'refresh[es] a well-known work [The First Symphony] with ear-catching spark'.
