Coming Soon, Brahms Inspired - Orli Shaham

Brahms Inspired - Orli ShahamWe hear that the American pianist Orli Shaham has an intriguing new recital-disc in the pipeline, centring on Brahms's 4 Klavierstücke, Op. 119 and featuring world premiere recordings of new works by Brett Dean (b.1961), Bruce Adolphe (b.1955) and Avner Dorman (b.1975), all of which take their inspiration from the Brahms.

Both Adolphe’s My Inner Brahms: an intermezzo (first performed in June 2013) and Dorman’s After Brahms – 3 Intermezzos for Piano (which received its premiere just two months ago) were commissioned by Ms. Shaham, whilst Dean’s Hommage à Brahms (which is quite literally interleaved with the Brahms Intermezzi on the recording) was written for Shaham's friend and frequent collaborator Emanuel Ax - after its New York premiere last spring, the New York Times observed that 'Dean evokes the Brahms sound and style through a hazy, elusive contemporary sensibility' and argued that the work 'came across like a good guess at where Brahms would have ventured in his music had he kept going'. The Adolphe work was also well received at its first performance, with the South Florida Classical Review describing it as 'a densely post-Romantic work, with lyrical chromatic lines sequentially developed into powerful outbursts'.

Recorded in Mechanical Hall Massachusetts in May and December of last year, the two-disc recital also includes works by JS Bach, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin and Schoenberg, and will be released in June on Canary Classics.
