Coming Soon, St John Passion from the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin

St John Passion from the Akademie für Alte Musik BerlinWe hear that this Easter will bring a new St John Passion from the great Belgian maestro René Jacobs - the first time he has conducted the work on disc (though he can be heard as the alto soloist on Sigiswald Kuijken's 1990 recording with La Petite Bande, still available on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi).

Following acclaimed live performances in Paris and Berlin, Jacobs conducts the RIAS Kammerchor & Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, with several of the same soloists (soprano Sunhae Im, tenor Werner Güra and baritone Johannes Weisser) he used for his St Matthew Passion recording two years ago, a set which was praised for its 'overwhelming sincerity' (***** The Guardian), 'spatial innovations' (The Sunday Times) and 'magnificent vocal presence' (Gramophone). The new recording will use the familar 1739 version of the score, with the 1725 version also included as a bonus hi-res download.

The recording will be released at the end of March on Harmonia Mundi, and will be available to pre-order very soon via our Future Releases section.
