Coming Soon, Winter Dreams from Vasily Petrenko on Onyx

We hear that Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra have recently recorded a complete Tchaikovsky Symphonies cycle for Onyx Classics: the first instalment (due out in June) will include Nos. 1 ('Winter Dreams'), 2 (The 'Little Russian') and 5, with a second volume to follow in January 2017. This partnership have serious form when it comes to Tchaikovsky: back in 2008 (two years after Petrenko was appointed Principal Conductor in Liverpool), Gramophone greeted their disc of Tchaikovsky's ballet music on Avie by observing that 'These bonbons…clearly demonstrate the difference Petrenko is already making to the quality of the RLPO playing'. Not long afterwards, their Manfred Symphony on Naxos won the Gramophone Awards Orchestral Category in 2009, and their recording of the first two Piano Concertos (with the Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski, marking the beginning of their relationship with Onyx) won approbation from MusicWeb for its 'gorgeously sensitive orchestral playing'.

Petrenko and the RLPO will be back in the studio in April to continue their Elgar series with the Second Symphony and In the South (their First Symphony, released in February 2015, was praised by The Telegraph for its 'clarity of texture, fullness and glow of tone, well-honed emotion and springy muscle', and by the Sunday Times for Petrenko's 'youthful impetus'), and will also be recording a spring-themed disc in June (featuring Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Rachmaninov's little-recorded Spring Cantata of 1902, and Debussy's Printemps); more details on release-dates for these two when we have them!
