After The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky took an eclectic approach in his ballet scores: reinventing Baroque pieces by Pergolesi for the commedia dell’arte antics of Pulcinella; concocting Le Baiser de la fée, based on Hans Christian Andersen, from piano and vocal music by Tchaikovsky, and adopting a rigorous, neo-Classical voice for Perséphone. The Symphony in Three movements was choreographed by George Balanchine in 1972m the year after the composer’s death.

This collection of music from 20th-century ballets features such master conductors of British repertoire as Boult, Previn, Handley and Mackerras – who also, drawing on the works of Sir Arthur Sullivan, wrote Pineapple Poll for John Cranko. Dame Ninette de Valois choreographed the chessboard machinations of Bliss’s Checkmate, here complemented by Elgar’s much-loved Enigma Variations, Walton’s witty Façade, elemental dances from Holst’s opera The Perfect Fool, and colourful pieces by Berners, Lambert and Gordon.

Composer, conductor, arranger and orchestrator, John Lanchbery (1923-2003) achieved his greatest triumph with Sir Frederick Ashton’s comic ballet La Fille mal gardée, for which he adapted a 19th-century score by the French composer Hérold. Also with Ashton, Lanchbery brought Beatrix Potter’s animal characters to cinematic life in 1971 with transformations of music by Sullivan, Balfe and other Victorian composers. The complete film soundtrack in stereo can be heard here for the first time.

Chopin’s piano works - poetic, compact, varied in mood and often dance-inspired – have proved a rich source for ballet scores, whether orchestrated or in their original form. Serving abstract scenarios in Les Sylphides, produced by Fokine for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, and Dances at a Gathering and The Concert, both conceived by Jerome Robbins for the New York City Ballet, in Frederick Ashton’s A Month in the Country they flesh out Turgenev’s comic drama of emotional upheaval.

Britten and Bartók: Ballets

Britten and Bartók: Ballets

Bartók:

The Miraculous Mandarin, Op. 19, Sz. 73 (suite)

London Philharmonic Choir & London Philharmonic Orchestra, Jeremy Jackman

Britten:

The Prince of the Pagodas, Op. 57 - Suite

London Sinfonietta, Oliver Knussen

The Prince of the Pagodas and The Miraculous Mandarin: both titles suggest Oriental fairy tales, but while Britten set a fantastic scenario for choreographer John Cranko, Bartók controversially evoked and expressionist urban nightmare. In his variation-based score, Britten salutes Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and the Javanese gamelan. Bartók, with atonality, complex textures and rhythms, and daring orchestration, illustrates vice and violence as a Chinese mandarin miraculously survives repeated murder attempts, only dying when his lust is assuaged.

Great 20th century choreographers draw on diverse musical sources in this collection: Sir Frederick Ashton appropriates Mendelssohn’s exquisite incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Satie’s haunting Gymnopédies; John Cranko, ably abetted by Sir Charles Mackerras, cherry-picks from the early operas of Verdi, while Bellini’s operas inspire George Balanchine; Jerome Robbins dreams on Chopin’s Nocturnes, and Michel Fokine, accepting Weber’s Invitation to the Dance, also finds pathos in Saint-Saën’s Carnival of the Animals.

The splendour of Russia’s ballet tradition is evoked in spectacular scores by Rimsky-Korsakov, Khachaturian and Glazunov, while Shostakovich espouses modernism – and ‘Tea for Two’. The exotic Scheherazade, which inspired a steamy harem scenario from Diaghilev and Fokine, is here entrusted to Riccardo Muti. Aram Khachaturian himself conducts excerpts from Spartacus – including the sweepingly romantic and justly celebrated Adagio; another, contracting highlight comes with the fiery Sabre Dance from the same composer’s Gayaneh.

Symphony in C - City of London Sinfonia/Richard Hickox

23. IV. Final : Allegro vivace - Richard Hickox/City of London Sinfonia

Following the huge success of the previous release of outstanding ballet product, including the magnificent 50 CD box set A FESTIVAL OF BALLET, the ten BALLET EDITION albums and I LOVE BALLET, EMI Classics presents a further eight albums of ballet music.

These 2CD mid-price sets, drawn from the catalogues of EMI Classics and Virgin Classics, present a selection of the best-loved and most popular ballet music by the great composers, performed by the world’s leading artists.

This a collection of many of the best-known and most familiar items from across the whole spectrum of classical ballet. It starts with the swan theme from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and encompasses other famous ‘white’ ballets like Adam’s Giselle and Chopin’s Les Sylphides as well as Prokofiev’s two favourites love stories: Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella. Lively and colourful music is heard from Coppélia, La Fille mal gardée and Gayaneh, and witty sophistication is represented by Poulenc’s Les Biches and Satie’s Monotones. Stravinsky unique musical style is heard in extracts from Petrushka and Apollo and pure dance is not neglected in Franck’s Symphonic Variations, the waltz from Tchaikovsky’s Serenade and the glorious finale from Bizet’s Symphony in C that ends the programme.

These 2CD mid-price sets, drawn from the catalogues of EMI Classics and Virgin Classics, present a selection of the best-loved and most popular ballet music by the great composers, performed by the world’s leading artists.

Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein were two outstanding American composers who both contributed hugely to the musical scene in the USA. Both wrote ballets that broke new ground: Copland on themes that echoed the vast and lonely expanses of the American prairies, and Bernstein on the hectic life in New York in the middle of the 20th century. This album presents complete performances of Copland’s Billy the Kid and Appalachian Spring and Bernstein’s Fancy Free and Facsimile, as well as extracts from other works including Bernstein’s powerful Symphonic Dances from his smash hit musical West Side Story.

These 2CD mid-price sets, drawn from the catalogues of EMI Classics and Virgin Classics, present a selection of the best-loved and most popular ballet music by the great composers, performed by the world’s leading artists.

This album brings together four delightful ballets that sum up all the qualities that people associate with France and particularly Paris, namely gaiety, sophistication, romantic love and joi-de-vivre. Gaiety abounds in Offenbach’s frothy music that the conductor Manuel Rosenthal arranged for Leonide Massine’s ballet Gaîté Parisienne. Poulenc’s score for Les Biches perfectly encapsulates the mood and spirit of the madcap 1920s in France, and Messager’s charming music for The Two Pigeons paints a glowing picture of young love in the studio of a Parisian artist. The final ballet, Les Patineurs uses music by the French operatic composer Meyerbeer as a vehicle for Frederick Ashton’s light-hearted evocation of fun and games on the ice of a frozen pond in winter.
