While the fifth and the ninth quartet quite audibly sound like Shostakovich, Weinberg’s fourteenth string quartet seems to set out on a new creative journey. Mieczyslav Weinberg was a pupil of Shostakovich and was highly regarded by the Great Russian as a composer in his own right. Shostakovich missed no opportunity to recommend Weinberg’s music to friends and colleagues. He enjoyed the friendly rivalry with his pupil in the field of the String Quartet.
