Quatuor Danel

Vol. 6 marks the completion of the Mieczyslaw Weinberg String Quartet series on cpo. The interpretation of the Belgian Danel Quartet can only be described as a true windfall. This volume featuring the early Quartet No. 2 of 1939 and the last Quartet No. 17 from 1986 offers an overview of Weinberg’s entire oeuvre.

“the Danel Quartet deliver strongly committed performances employing a hugely varied and imaginative tonal palette that always serves the music to its best advantage.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 ****

“this disc is the final volume in a complete survey of [Weinberg's] string quartets. It is, therefore, a particular joy that they play with such insight, as well as accuracy and homogeneity of tone and ensemble. There is no hint of the victim in this music...Instead, it is imbued with a sense of pride in how greatness manages to flourish above all.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012

Quatuor Danel

Volume 5 of CPO’s complete edition of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s string quartets with the Quatuor Danel continues with the world première recordings of Quartets Nos. 1, 3 and 10. Also included are the Capriccio Op. 11 and Aria Op. 9.

The series has been highly acclaimed with volume 1 awarded Chamber Music Choice and volumes 2&3 receiving 5 star reviews in BBC Music Magazine. The series has also been reviewed favourably in Gramophone.

“The Quatuor Danel is particularly eloquent [in the Tenth], delivering powerfully impassioned playing in the opening declamatory movement and the short third-movement Adagio while projecting a deep sense of unease in the eerie scherzo.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ****

“The sound is beautifully balanced, close without being overbearing, the playing a model for any aspiring quartet...These five pieces offer a fascinating, rarely viewed glimpse into [Weinberg's] early output and - in the extensively revised First Quartet - how he might have developed had the Second World War not forced him from his native Poland...Another excellent disc.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

Quatuor Danel

While the fifth and the ninth quartet quite audibly sound like Shostakovich, Weinberg’s fourteenth string quartet seems to set out on a new creative journey. Its five movements continue without a break, but each of them has a completely different thematic character.

“in the first movement [of the Ninth] Weinberg eschews lyricism and projects an almost relentless density of sound...[the 14th] is dominated by long impassioned monologues for solo instruments and by a seeming inability to achieve resolution between passages of violence and those of a more consoling nature...committed playing makes this release worthwhile.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2011 ****

Quatuor Danel

“Mieczyslaw Weinberg's Sixth Quartet has to wait over 60 years before receiving what is believed to have been its world premiere performance by the Quatuor Danel in January 2007. …on the evidence of this extraordinary compelling and beautifully recorded performance, it's an extremely powerful and deeply affecting work. Outstandingly dedicated performances.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2010 *****

Quatuor Danel

Mieczyslav Weinberg was a pupil of Shostakovich and was highly regarded by the Great Russian as a composer in his own right. Shostakovich missed no opportunity to recommend Weinberg’s music to friends and colleagues. He enjoyed the friendly rivalry with his pupil in the field of the String Quartet.

After the dazzling reviews volume one received, CPO are proud to present the second eagerly anticipated volume in the Quatuor Danel’s complete recordings of the sixteen String Quartets, of which Nos. 7, 11 and 13 are presented here. Gramophone wrote that “The Danel Quartet play both works with commendable facility and understanding” whilst BBC Music Magazine awarded it a BBC Music Choice.

“With a wonderfully clear recording and superbly committed playing from the Quatuor Danel, extracting the maximum amount of colour and variety of gesture from the music, this release deserves the strongest recommendation.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2009 *****

“…the Danel Quartet play these works splendidly, really at home with the idiom and captured in splendid sound by Arnd Coppers.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2009

“Having previously recorded a highly praised Shostakovich cycle, it's hardly surprising that the Quatuor Danel demonstrate such an instinctive understanding of Weinberg's idiom.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2008 *****
