Robert and Clara Schumann were certainly exceptional parents - not just by the standards of the 19th century. Especially striking was how much time Robert devoted to his daughter Marie, their firstborn. Marie, Elise and Julie were the daughters for whom Schumann composed these little pieces and with whom he also made music; and these are NOT “childish” pieces. This CD is a delightful overview of the pieces and little melodies that Schumann produced with and for his girls and practically brings to life again the spirit of the Schumann household. As might be expected, a number of first recordings are represented on this CD. “This is a fascinating disc to dip into...Uhlig’s playing is sublime – incredibly witty and attentive to detail, though never to the detriment of the music’s flow. Nicely recorded too, with interesting sleeve notes.” The Arts Desk, 18th May 2013 |

“In general Rilling steers a secure middle course between Scylla and Charybdis, between the leaden interpretations that were all too common at one time and the whizz-kid treatment. There are, however, some performances here which don’t quite come off - parts of No.3 are a bit lumpen, for example” MusicWeb International, January 2013 | | | (also available to download from $20.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | A. Mendelssohn: Motetten zur Weinacht & Deutsche Messe
Following on from their critically acclaimed series of a cappella choral works, the SWR Vokalensemble are here joined by the wonderful Frieder Bernius for this recording of Arnold Mendelssohn’s Sacred Choral Works: Christmas Motets and German Mass. Frieder Bernius’ credentials are well established for his kind of repertoire and along with the SWR forces, this release will be a sought-after next edition to Haenssler’s series; stunning music beautifully performed. “Son of a second cousin of Felix Mendelssohn, Arnold (1855-1933) was a respected teacher. His beautiful, masterly choral works are splendidly sung here.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2012 **** “Mendelssohn devoted most of his life to his academic career, writing superbly crafted choral music like the Christmas cantatas on this excellent disc....[Bernius] draws wonderfully varied tone colours and dynamic contrasts from his excellent chorus...It is good to have a disc that gives us a new and virtually unknown Mendelssohn to admire.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012 “it’s a delight – attractive music, constructed with a craftsmanship worthy of Arnold Mendelssohn’s more famous forebear, in excellent performances and well recorded.” MusicWeb International, November 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
