Bach, C P E: Hamburg Symphonies (6) for Strings, Wq. 182 (H567-662)

Bach, C P E: Hamburg Symphonies (6) for Strings, Wq. 182 (H567-662)

In honor of CPE Bach's 300th birthday, hänssler CLASSIC will be releasing an exciting series of recordings dedicated to the music of this well known but hitherto neglected Bach son during the first 3 months of 2014. At the beginning there are the so-called “Hamburg” symphonies Wq 182, interpreted with great sensitivity and bite, when necessary, by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under the renowned conductor and former violist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Wolfram Christ. Maestro Christ sees these works as expressive pieces, open to multiple interpretations that invite the listener to experience them as almost Romantic in their gesture and content. Deciding on a fortepiano continuo instrument is not only a historically informed decision, but contributes to a perfectly balanced overall sound.

Richard Strauss: Tone Poems, Vol. 1

Richard Strauss: Tone Poems, Vol. 1

Strauss, R:

Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40

Tod und Verklärung, Op. 24

South West German Radio Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, Francois-Xavier Roth

This CD marks the beginning of a new recording cycle of the complete symphonic poems of Richard Strauss as performed by the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg and their principal conductor, François-Xavier Roth.

Future volumes will be released during the coming years, at the rate of two CDs per year. Already in his first release with hänssler CLASSIC of Mahler's 1st Symphony, the French conductor has made it clear that he has both the strength as well as the sensitivity to build delicate orchestral colors – exactly what is necessary with Richard Strauss’ works. And with his orchestra, Roth has one of the best ensembles in Germany.

“the combination of his muscly, forward-moving approach, with not an ounce of fat on it, and perhaps most stunning engineering accorded to the master orchestrator yet, mean that both the mock-epic composer hero of Ein Heldenleben and the dying man of Tod und Verklärung make their momentous journeys without sag or stress...these performances pulse with ideal life.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2013 ****

“What I particularly like about this performance is its musical honesty...Roth draws extremely fine playing from his orchestra” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2013

Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra , Stuttgart Southwest Radio Vocal Ensemble, Stuttgart Lehrergesangverein, Carl Schuricht

A very special boxed set documenting the artistry of one of the 20th century’s greatest conductors. Includes a special bonus disc including Schuricht in rehearsal.

“There’s no question that if you admire Schuricht then you will be intrigued to hear those performances that stand as an appendix to his Parisian cycle of the Beethoven symphonies...This may be a specialist box but it continues the fine archival work that Hänssler is carrying out on behalf of the conductor.” MusicWeb International, 1st July 2013

Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor

Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D Minor

Norrington has released a series of acclaimed Bruckner performances on CD. His fresh approach injects a healthy dose of “worldliness” into these works.

“Where Norrington is fearless is in Bruckner’s on-the-spot shifts of tempo or key.” Gramophone

“As might be expected, Sir Roger employs instruments of the day, with a head-count that Bruckner might have expected and an appropriate seating plan. Bowing, phrasing and articulation are all in keeping with the manners of period and there's the usual Norrington embargo on vibrato...Excellent sound and, I suppose, good to have as food for thought, which is invariably what Norrington is all about.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012

Telemann Cantatas: Easter, Ascension & Pentecost

Telemann Cantatas: Easter, Ascension & Pentecost

Telemann:

Ich weiß, daß mein Erlöser lebt, TWV 1:873

Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen. TWV 1:642

Daran ist Erschienen die Liebe Gotte, TVWV 1:165

Stefanie Wust (soprano), Angela Froemer (contralto), Georg Poplutz (tenor) & Jens Hamann (bass)

Collegium vocale Siegen & Hannoversche Hofkapelle, Ulrich Stötzel

The musicians, soloists, choir and conductor featured here have all been involved with the music of Telemann for many years. They have several critically acclaimed recordings in the Hänssler catalogue. Here they perform three festive works. The music is easy-going and tuneful with moments of virtuosity and characteristic tone painting.

Telemann had the great misfortune of being born into an age of geniuses, sharing the spotlight with Bach, Handel, Scarlatti and Vivaldi. In any other generation, his originality, consistent high-quality and prolific output would place him among the greatest musicians of all times. Indeed even today, no complete published edition of Telemann's works exists. Throughout his long and productive life, Telemann drew upon every musical influence at his disposal - North German counterpoint, the easy lyricism of the Italians, the elegant dance forms of the French royal court and even the folk songs of the Gypsies and Slavic peoples. In this way, Telemann may be compared to Haydn - who similarly produced a steady stream of masterworks in every form, drawing upon the widest possible range of musical influences and transformed them into utterly original, and often visionary compositions.

To date, more than 1750 Telemann cantatas have been catalogued - with new discoveries still occurring almost every year! These works range from intimate compositions for a single voice and continuo, to massive works for double choir and large orchestras. The current release from Telemann scholar Ulrich Stötzel features the World Premiere recordings of three of Telemann's choral cantatas.

“This selection of Easter, Ascension and Whitsun cantatas by Telemann is vividly brought to life by Ulrich Stotzel and his well-drilled musicians.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 ***

Symphony No. 92 in G major 'Oxford'

Read Presto's complete review of this disc here.

“Fey has form for his previous heavy-handed telling of Haydn's jokes but, mirabile dictu, he plays this one pretty much straight...just about the best offering yet in this occasionally exasperating but always thought-provoking series.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012

“Fey is rightly more interested in recreating the spirit, drama and character that Haydn would have wanted rather than strictly the sound world...it is clear that he combines that knowledge along with his sound musical instincts in everything he does...This is really exciting playing – bold and daring and invariably seems to somehow feel ‘right’.” Chris O'Reilly, Presto Classical, 19th March 2012
