Tres Francaix

Chamber Music of Jean Francaix

Françaix:

Françaix par lui-même Variations sur un thème plaisant

Quatuor (1971) for cor anglais, violin, viola and cello

Sextet

L'heure du berger

Anthony Robb (flute), Sandra Skipper (flute/alto flute), Neyire Ashworth (clarinet/bass clarinet), Alan Andrews (clarinet/bass clarinet/basset horn), Philip Gibbon (bassoon), Damian Brasington (bassoon/contra-bassoon), David Juritz (violin), Martin Outram (viola), Rebecca Knight (cello), Jeremy Polmear (oboe/cor anglais), Christopher Hooker (oboe/cor anglais), Susan Dent, Alexia Cammish (horns), Diana Ambache (piano)

"Good humour is indispensable to the well-being of humanity." So wrote Jean Françaix of his Quatuor for cor anglais and strings, and all the music on this CD demonstrates his ability not just to entertain, but to lift the spirits.

Like his models Ravel and Poulenc, Françaix was masterful in his writing for instruments, and his particular delight in writing for winds lasted the sixty years of his compositional life. Wit is ever-present, except in the Elègie, a meditation on what Françaix called the 'catastrophe' of Mozart's early death. In the piano Variations, each of the nine variations illustrates a different aspect of Françaix' style, from American rumbustiousness to beautiful, touching miniatures.

"Jean Françaix's chamber music, whose great charm is difficult to analyse, is delightfully French, with its wit, lightness of touch, quixotic changing of moods, and blending of colours.

"It is most sympathetically played here, helped by a believable balance, with each wind group felicitously blended.

"Altogether a most infectious and enjoyable collection." Ivan March, Gramophone

Gelächter Trio

Why should the composers of Les Six have a monopoly on delightful music for reed trio? The Trios of Cecilia McDowall and Andrew Wilson take their pleasures with subtlety and charm. Timothy Salter‘s Dovetail is more abstract, but with a wink perpetually hovering in the background; and in Dark Gravity, Marc Yeats takes us on a bizarre journey through the cosmos.

The Gelächter Trio takes its name from the German for laughter, and a spirit of fun imbues both these compositions and their performances.

Léon Goossens (oboe)

Among the favourites is the ever-fresh concerto on themes of Cimarosa, and the sinuous and deeplyfelt solo from the Sinfonia of Bach’s Easter Oratorio. There are several pieces in lighter vein, in which Goossens excelled. Lesser-known, but coming back to the attention of present-day oboists is the Concerto by Léon’s brother Eugene, with its exotic orchestration and virtuoso solo part. The album is completed by Léon Goossens’ 1947 interpretation of the Richard Strauss concerto, written just over a year earlier. Accompanying the CD is a16-

page booklet that has an extended interview with Nicholas Daniel. In it he speaks of the Goossens legacy, connections between Goossens' career as a soloist and his own, and on the individual performances on the album. Specifically he considers this first recording of Strauss' Oboe Concerto with his own interpretation, being prepared at the time of the interview for a new recording.

Cuarteto Emispherio

Mozart may have written the best-known Oboe Quartet but it has many equally entertaining companions, as this CD shows. The delightful and inventive classical Quartets by Johann Wanhal and Franz Krommer featured here are by Bohemian composers well-known to oboists, if not to the wider world, who may well wonder why not. Of the more contemporary Quartets featured here, Malcolm Arnold continues with the playfulness that Mozart started, while Spanish composer Ferrer Ferran’s Horus is a gripping and intense work, written especially for this Quartet. The Spanish theme continues with two well-known folk and dance-influenced pieces by Isaac Albéniz.

The Compositions on this CD - concert, solo and chamber pieces – include all the works that Isidora Žebeljan has written for the oboe and similar instruments. They are divided into two groups based on their origin, which are represented equally on this CD – one group includes compositions written for the concert stage, while the other group comprises arrangements of pieces of her various incidental music. In this new form, extracted from the emotional frame of the plot, these miniatures represent little jewels of chamber music for the oboe.
