“As this ensemble's name implies, viols are the start here, and part of the disc's attraction lies in the novelty of hearing these pieces, which are played often enough, in an instrumentation that largely dispenses with the more usual winds. The only touch of non-string colour is provided by the cornetto. The role of the continuo is immeasurably enhanced, becoming not so much a backdrop to the solo lines as their foundation. And the continuo section is rich indeed: harp, claviorganum, theorbo and harpsichord. When everything comes together the result is as colourful and eartickling as anything to be heard on other recordings of this repertoire. The performances rise to the music's challenges with elegance and barely any technical strain. This is a disc that grows on you with repeated listening, and demonstrates that Frescobaldi's canzonas are no less inventive than his keyboard music.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Strummed, plucked bowed or blown - the notes unfailingly enchant, enveloping the listener in a penumbra of subtle textures. Frescobaldi's experiments with non-keyboard instruments have seldom been recorded. Despite a slightly claustrophobic acoustic, this disc imaginatively recreates a neglected moment in Frescobaldi's artistic evolution.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2004 **** | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. Mariana Flores (soprano), Stephanie de Failly (violin), Leonardo García-Alarcón (harpsichord/organ) Ensemble Clematis, Leonardo García-Alarcón Frescobaldi’s renown primarily stems from his keyboard works and from his position as organist at St. Peter’s in Rome, although a certain number of his compositions are nonetheless linked to his connections with Florence and with the Grand Duke of Tuscany. In the city that saw the birth of accompanied monody Frescobaldi published two volumes of Arie musicali; these demonstrate a mastery of dramatic and theatrical expression that could have easily allowed him to become an opera composer. The instrumental Canzoni are dedicated to the same patron and are presented here as a subtle counterpoint to the vocal works. This CD presents the new design of the Ricercar collection, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the label (new layout for the digipak, the booklet and the label!) | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. | | | A tribute to Gustav LeonhardtThe last Recordings
Alpha pays homage to Gustav Leonhardt with this lavish box set, comprising the last five recordings made by the great pioneer: a wonderful musical legacy. Also included are tributes from musicians and collaborators, such as Philippe Herreweghe, Elisabeth Joyé and Gilles Cantagrel, and the booklet also presents a gallery of hitherto unpublished photographs. These recordings take us on a fabulous journey into the world of late Renaissance to late Baroque keyboard works and explore a fascinating diversity of instruments (harpsichords, the hybrid claviorganum, the extraordinary Dom Bedos organ of Sainte-Croix in Bordeaux). The last one, for which Gustav Leonhardt was artistic director and organist, was his final recording and devoted to secular cantatas by J. S. Bach, performed by the ensemble Café Zimmermann. | | | (also available to download from $30.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Il Concerto Delle Viole Barberini
Andrea De Carlo (bass viol & direction) Ensemble Mare Nostrum & Vox Luminis We are inclined to forget that the viol family still enjoyed a certain success in the land of the violin at the beginning of the 17th century; works that were once performed in private concerts given in the palace of Cardinal Francesco Barberini now form part of this Concerto di viole. One of the Roman composers represented here is the enigmatic Cherubino Waesich, the author of the most important volume of canzoni and madrigals intended for these ensembles. “Mare Nostrum imagines a concert for the viol-loving Cardinal Barberini. Revelatory rarities by Waesich, choice blooms from Frescobaldi's Fiori musicale, and a compelling Scarlatti surprise.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 *** | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days.
