| | | Einar Englund: Orchestral Works
Niklas Sivelov (piano) Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Jorma Panula “Einar Englund was the finest Finnish symphonist between Sibelius and Kokkonen, and the Blackbird Symphony is one of his best. You can hear why he so named it from the woodwind writing, particularly the solos for flute, although he grew wary of emphasising the title in later life. One of the most attractive features of all his music is its orchestration. Panula's account is superbly played, with excellent sound. The Fourth (1976), written in memory of Shostakovich, is less epic, though no less inventive. A chamber symphony for strings and percussion, its most effective movement is the sparkling but macabre Scherzo, 'Tempus fugit', haunted by the chiming of bells and the manic ticking of some outlandish clock. Here, as well as in the darkly poetic third span, 'Nostalgia', and concluding 'Epilogue', Panula finds great poetry. Naxos's centrepiece, though, is the first of Englund's two piano concertos. Englund's own recording disappeared from the catalogue long ago, but Niklas Sivelöv proves a fine advocate.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Excellent recordings of three of Englund's finest works, including the Blackbird Symphony, depicting the 'brutality of Man¡K compared with the purity of Nature'. Panula's account is superbly played¡K with an excellent sound. Naxos's centrepiece is the first of Englund's two piano concertos, otherwise unavailable, written for a competition in 1955- which it won. Englund's own recording disappeared from the catalogue long ago, but Niklaus Sivelov proves a fine advocate. Strongly recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2000 | | | (also available to download from $5.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. (Available now to download.) |

| | | Fasch - Passio Jesu Christi
Zoltan Megyesi, Peter Cser & Maria Zadori Capella Savaria baroque Orchestra & Schola Cantorum Budapestiensis, Terey-Smith An important contemporary of J. S. Bach, Fasch studied at Leipzig University. He failed to obtain the position of Cantor at the choir school of St Thomas, for which his friend Telemann was at first preferred and to which Bach was finally appointed, and served from 1722 as Kapellmeister at Zerbst. He enjoyed a considerable reputation in his own time and his music was both admired and transcribed by Bach, whose posthumous fame overshadowed him. “…an assured performance of an intriguing work.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2008 | | | (also available to download from $5.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | FranceCathedrals and Megaliths, Calvaries and Tapestries from Brittany to the Loire
Fauré: | Requiem, Op. 48 Lisa Beckley (soprano), Nicholas Gedge (bass-baritone), Colm Carey (organ) Schola Cantorum of Oxford, Oxford Camerata, Jeremy Summerly Pavane, Op. 50 Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Keith Clark Sicilienne, Op. 78 Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ondrej Lenárd Berceuse, Op. 16 Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Keith Clark |
The Places Starting from the great Cathedral of Chartres, our tour takes us to Brittany and Normandy in Northern France, and to Franche Comté and Burgundy. Many of the scenes chosen match closely the music of Fauré and in particular that of his Requiem, with a wide range of corresponding images, from the calvaries of Brittany to the startling architecture of Le Corbusier in his church of Notre Dame du Haut at Ronchamp, and from The Last Judgement by Roger van der Weyden in Beaune to the tapestries of Jean Lurçat at Angers. The Music The music chosen for this tour of France is by Gabriel Fauré. It includes his Requiem, the evocative Pavane, his Sicilienne, probably originally intended as part of incidental music for Molière’s Le bourgeois gentilhomme, and the Berceuse. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
