Stefan Weglowski's project is a result of a lengthy intellectual process, intense growth and a search for inspiration. The concept of form, the vision of a defined dramaturgical structure, the idea of a powerful, unequivocal, intense and expressive music, accompanied by equally poignant lyrics, emerged gradually. The search for a literary layer led him to the books of the Old Testament, which, rediscovered years later, presents us with a God who is strict and crul. The excerpted material has undergone a long, arduous processing, in order to achieve a clearly defined effect - an idiosyncratic, unique sound, which is an invariant element of a complex musical structure.

Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad (viola)

Oslo Philharmonic

Viola player Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad is the latest talent to emerge from a new, golden generation of Scandinavian musicians. He made his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Eivind Aadland in 2013, and has since been travelling all around the world, performing in prestigious festivals and concert venues; he is a national favourite.

In 2016 he was chosen to join the world’s most prestigious training programme for experienced classical musicians: the BBC’s New Generation Artists Scheme. This has led to performances with BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Orchestra of Wales, BBC Northern Ireland, as well as performances with London Sinfonietta.

Christian Sinding is one of the few Norwegian composers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who gained recognition with their music outside their native country. Unlike Edvard Grieg, Norwegian folk-elements are not prominent in his richly contrapuntal post-Wagnerian orchestral style. Coupled here with William Walton's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, this is a welcome addition to the catalogue and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra's recordings.

Philidor: Six Parisian Quartets - L'art de la Modulation

Philidor: Six Parisian Quartets - L'art de la Modulation

Philidor, F-A:

Sinfonia I in G Minor

Sinfonia II in F Major

Sinfonia III in G Major

Sinfonia IV in B-Flat Major

Sinfonia V in C Major

Sinfonia VI in D Major

Elizabeth Wallfisch (violin)

Ars Antiqua

Philidor’s name for his collection of quartets, L’art de la modulation, might cause one to expect a thorough exploration of all the major and minor keys as in Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier. Philidor’s approach is very different. His use of the term ’modulation’ has less to do with musical theory and more with the exploration of colour in the way an artist might modulate from one tone to another in a painted canvas. Each of the six quartets takes us on a quirky journey filled with unexpected harmonic twists and turns. It can be eloquent and charming, but can also surprise the ear and nudge the very edge of sensibility. With so much playful chromaticism, the quartets must have seemed wildly progressive for adherents of the old régime. Although he remains faithful to the standard Italian sonata movements and French dance forms of the time, there is always a twist. Whether it is a dramatic gesture borrowed from opera, a lilting aria or a complex fugue, he manages to capture the glitter of Rococo stylishness in entirely new ways.

Martin Best Ensemble

Thys Yool is a four-part programme of medieval music in which four images central to the Christmas story are brought together. Beginning with a sometimes melancholy picture of earth-bound humanity (Winter and Wassail), the record moves through nativity songs (A Child Is Born) towards the point at which Christian and pagan traditions come together in an adoration of the Virgin which is often expressed in the passionate language of the courtly lo ver. A sense of human perceptions being profoundly altered by the events of Christmas is evoked in Mary’s Son, Goodwill on Earth and a French 12th century conductus touches on the theme of Rebirth.

Things will be jolly good at the Mörbisch Lake Festival in 2017! With Christel the post mistress and Adam the bird seller, two of the best-known operetta characters will be returning to the lake stage after an absence of nearly twenty years. Petty corruption in positions of authority, comedy of errors and something for the heart – all the classic operetta ingredients come together masterfully in the Vogelhändler. The arias “Grüß’ enk Gott, alle miteinander”, “Ich bin die Christel von der Post” and “Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol” are very well known to lovers of operetta throughout the world.

Read our exclusive interview with Michael Spyres about the recording here.

Hailing from Mansfield, Missouri, Michael Sypres originally set out to pursue a career in musicals before singing opera. He comes from a family of musicians who run an opera company in Springfield MO, and after studying in the US, travelled to Europe to complete his studies in Vienna. He has rapidly established a formidable reputation for his sensitive singing and astonishing vocal range, with leading roles a the Royal Opera House Coven Garden, Lyric Theatre Chicago, Opéra de Paris and Aix-en-Provence Festival. In 2017, he appeared as Don José in Carmen in Paris and sang Enée, opposite Joyce DiDonato in Berlioz's Les Troyens in Strasbourg.

Michael starred on the Opera Rara recording of Donizetti's Les Martyrs, which received a string of awards including Opera Recording of the Year at the International Opera Awards in 2016. He returned to Opera Rara to record Le Duc d'Albe and now we are thrilled to release his debut solo recital album, featuring 19th century repertoire synonymous with the tenor-of-his-day, Gilbert-Louis Duprez. Espoir includes arias in French and Italian by Donizetti, Berlioz, Verdi and Rossini, as well as duets with Joyce El-Khoury, whose debut recital recording will be released alongside Michael's.

“Musical history aside, these discs deserve a place on the shelves due to the extremely high quality of singing...notable highlights [are] the refulgent tone he pours into the Cellini aria, his savouring of text as well as notes in the final scene from Lucia...and his sheer fervour in Gaston's aria from Jérusalem...Rizzi conducts with a blend of security and stylistic authority, while the Hallé plays wonderfully for him.” Opera, September 2017

“Spyres is fearless in the high-lying parts written for Duprez...which sometimes venture above high C. This Spyres accomplishes with his deft voix mixte — a blend of chest and head voice — to thrilling, if not always beautiful, effect.” Sunday Times, 17th September 2017

“Spyres, with elegant support from the Hallé and Carlo Rizzi, demonstrates his ease in top notes, his fluency and his athletic flexibility.” The Observer, 30th July 2017 ****
