Europakonzert 2017 from Cyprus

Europakonzert 2017 from Cyprus

Brahms:

Hungarian Dance No. 5

Dvorak:

Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88

Koncz:

Hungarian Fantasy on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber

Weber:

Oberon Overture

Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73

Andreas Ottensamer (clarinet)

The Europakonzert 2017 brought the Berliner Philharmoniker to one of the most mythical places in history: Paphos, birthplace of Aphrodite. Andreas Ottensamer was the soloist with his interpretation of Weber‘s highly elaborate Clarinet Concerto. The Berliner Philharmoniker, under the baton of Mariss Jansons, also played Dvořák’s 8th Symphony, an unusually optimistic and light-hearted composition.

The Berliner Philharmoniker celebrate their founding day (May 1st, 1892) in a European city of cultural significance every year.

This year’s concert takes the orchestra to one of the most mythical places in its history: Paphos, birthplace of Aphrodite.

Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons returns to the Berliner Philharmoniker’s rostrum once again, while the orchestra’s principal clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer is the solo clarinettist for the 2017 Europakonzert.

In front of the city’s Byzantine castle, the Berliner Philharmoniker play works by Carl Maria von Weber and Antonín Dvořák , which impress with their lyrical zest and warm colours.

Andreas Ottensamer performs his interpretation of von Weber‘s Clarinet Concerto, which is known as a much more elaborate composition than Mozart‘s clarinet concertos owing to the cooperation between the composer and clarinettist Joseph Heinrich Bärmann.

The concert concludes with Dvořák‘s 8th Symphony, an unusually optimistic and light-hearted composition.

Words and Space (Jiří Pokorny)

Jiří Pokorny's “Words and Space” is a metaphor of an intrapersonal speech, a book full of floating stories. It is personal, intimate and very poetic.

“Phoenix” is inspired by the idea of the infinite circular motion of life: Birth, growth, immobility, death and finally birth again. Choreographer Philippe Kratz tries to understand who we were and what we are capable of becoming.

In “Narcissus” Giuseppe Spota takes a look at the youth of today. Are they ready to come out of their virtual frames and face the mirror of everyday life? Or will they all end up like Narcissus, alone to admire and cherish themselves?

The word kaleidoscope comes from the Greek: Kalós (beautiful), éidos (image) and scopéo (observe). This recording was made with a view to bringing together a repertoire of a markedly Spanish character. It begins with a work be- longing to Spain’s “painteresque” music move- ment, in vogue at the end of the 19th century, with Memories of Andalusia by Eduardo Ocón; includes the Generation of ‘51 through two of its representatives, Manuel Castillo and Amando Blanquer; and also incorporates the nationalism of Falla and Turina. Original works for the flute and piano by Ocón, Blanquer and Castillo were selected, while compositions by Turina and Fal- la were adapted, respecting the original scores with the utmost care, through a sonorous kalei- doscope in which the music’s colour changes, without shedding its original beauty.

This recording from the award-winning viol consort focuses on an important 16th century composer and radical thinker Christopher Tye.

The English composer is especially bold in his metrical and harmonic experiments embraced within his mystical but surprisingly approachable instrumental works.

There are pieces depicting the biblical Rachel weeping for her children, an In Nomine counted in lengths of five beats (unheard of before the nineteenth century) and obsessional works such as Sit Fast which test the rhythmic skills of musicians with passages of dizzyingly modernist metrical complexity.

Phantasm take a radically different approach to previous recordings, delivering a performance that brings out the music's ceaseless energy, rhythmic articulation, and provocative harmonies in short, one that highlights Tye's insights as music for today.

Phantasm will perform works by Christopher Tye at Austria's Trigonale Festival and London's Wigmore Hall in September and October 2017 respectively.

“This collection of [Tye’]s complete consort music throws up surprise after surprise – a revelation of a recording that offers a startling perspective on a familiar musical landscape…Discovering the unexpected sensuality of the In nomine ‘Round’, the yelping, insistent plaints of the In nomine ‘Cry’ and the provocative dramatics of the In nomine ‘Re la re’, Phantasm are skilled musical tour guides to Tye’s challenging terrain.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2017

“What strikes me about this recording is its suaveness, its evenness, its consistent beauty. Phantasm ride the impish contours of Tye’s imagination with unbending calm...The playing is remarkable, and technically flawless, but in music so full of surprises I would love to hear some surprise.” The Guardian, 31st August 2017 ****
