Peter Gijsbertsen (tenor), Jozef de Beenhouwer (piano)

This is the fourth Phaedra Album featuring the young Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen. Well-known and less well- known songs, an attractive anthology of Richard Strauss’s fascinating lied repertoire. Peter Gijsbertsen is embarking on an international career, which is taking him all over Europe.

His accompanist is Jozef de Beenhouwer, one of Flanders’ most prominent pianists, who was for several years one of the accompanists at the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Together with mezzo soprano Lucienne van Deyck he teaches the lied course at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music of Antwerp (at present part of the Antwerp School of Arts). In 1993 he was awarded the prestigious Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau (Federal Republic of Germany).

Sonya Bach (piano)

Korean pianist Sonya Bach studied with Lazar Berman and Alicia de Larrocha, and is a Steinway artist. For such a great virtuoso of both harpsichord and organ, it is remarkable that J.S Bach composed only one original work for keyboard and orchestra: the 5th Brandenburg Concerto which with its huge 65 bar cadenza in the first movement created the blue print for all piano concertos that followed. However, Bach, the great arranger, turned to his other concertos and created 7 (No.6 omitted here is for keyboard, 2 flutes and strings) concertos that give us an idea of his ability as a player, but also his genius in transcription, often taking great liberties with the original material to create new concertos. Bach performed these concertos at social gatherings of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig, and he directed from the keyboard.

Donizetti: Gemma Di Vergy

Donizetti: Gemma Di Vergy

Montserrat Caballé (Gemma), Natalya Chudy (Ida), Luis Lima (Tamas), Louis Quilico (Conte di Vergy), Paul Plishka (Guido)

Schola Cantorum, New York Opera Orchestra, Eve Queler

Another great coloratura artist, Montserrat Caballé, is heard in another prodigious Donizetti role, Gemma di Vergy, probably the most demanding he ever wrote for the soprano voice. It remained immensely popular in Italy during much of the 19th cen-tury. In Caballé’s 1976 live recording, never before released on CD, the “floated, ethereal tone for which she is renowned” was acclaimed by Gramophone, as was the conducting of the ever-resourceful Eve Queler, who with her Opera Orchestra of New York was responsible for reviving numerous undeservedly forgotten masterpieces.

In 1967, RCA recorded André Previn conducting a spar-kling performance of Mozart’s The Impresario (Der Schauspieldirektor). This slight 1786 “comedy with music” is fitted out with a new English libretto by Previn’s then wife Dory, who transplanted the amusing tale to the 20th century. André Navarra (cello)

When at the age of 15 André Navarra (1911-1988) completed his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, he ceased taking lessons and set out on his own path, honing his skills on, among other things, Ševčík’s virtuoso violin etudes, which he himself arranged for the cello.

He drew inspiration from the finest instrumentalists of his time. Victory in the prestigious competition in Vienna (1937) launched his international career as a soloist. Following his debut at the Prague Spring festival in May 1951, he would pay numerous visits to the city – to appear at the festival, to perform opposite the Czech Philharmonic, as well as to record for Supraphon.

The present 5-CD pack is the first complete release of the 19 studio albums Navarra made for the label between 1953 and 1966.

Includes some remarkable tracks that have not been previously issued digitally.

His collaboration with Karel Ančerl and Josef Suk gave rise to the legendary recording of Brahms’s Double Concerto, with the accounts of pieces by Prokofiev, Bloch, Schumann and Respighi made with the Czech Philharmonic under Ančerl being just as impressive and enthralling. In addition to Josef Suk, Navarra worked with the superlative pianists Alfred Holeček and František Maxián.

The Supraphon set includes six hours of sensitively remastered recordings, a real treat for those loving the enchanting cello timbres.
