Bellini: Norma

Bellini: Norma

18 November 1952 · London, Royal Opera House

Maria Callas (Norma), Ebe Stignani (Adalgisa), Mirto Picchi (Pollione), Giacomo Vaghi (Oroveso), Joan Sutherland (Clotilde), Paul Asciak (Flavio)

Palacio de las Bellas Artes, Vittorio Gui

'Bellini’s Norma is an epic and multi-faceted role, often considered the ultimate vocal challenge for an operatic soprano. Callas sang it on stage 92 times, more often than any other heroine, and her achievement casts a long shadow: more than 50 years after her last performance in the role (Paris, 1965) she remains the point of reference for any soprano who aspires to it. It was in 1952, as Norma, that she made her debut at London’s Royal Opera House, the theatre that witnessed her final operatic appearance 13 years later. In the famous duets that Norma shares with her fellow druid priestess, Adalgisa, Callas is partnered by another superlative singer, Ebe Stignani, the greatest Italian mezzo-soprano of her era. Taking the small role of Norma’s servant Clotilde is a singer who in 1952 was destined for great things, and for the role of Norma…' Joan Sutherland.

Bellini: La Sonnambula

Bellini: La Sonnambula

5 March 1955 · Milano, Teatro alla Scala

Cesare Valletti (Elvino), Maria Callas (Amina), Giuseppe Modesti (Rodolfo), Gabriella Carturan (Teresa), Eugenia Ratti (Lisa), Pier Luigi Latinucci (Alessio), Giuseppe Nessi (Notaro)

Teatro alla Scala, Leonard Bernstein

The La Scala production of La sonnambula in 1955 united three towering artistic personalities: Callas, Leonard Bernstein and Luchino Visconti. The excitement is palpable in this recording of its first night. Visually, it was of a stylised, Romantic beauty, with Callas presented like a classical ballerina. Aurally, Callas, supported at every turn by Bernstein’s alert and flexible conducting, portrays Bellini’s gentle heroine with exquisite empathy, creating a hushed, other-worldly atmosphere when Amina sings as she sleep-walks, and bursting with joy and relief in a blaze of coloratura in the opera’s final moments.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens

An album of new recordings and reimagined classics exploring the storytelling of Yusuf ‘Cat Stevens’ in the 50th anniversary year of his recorded music career.

The voice of a generation once again paired with producer Paul Samwell-Smith breathing new life in to the classic ‘Cat Stevens’ sound.

Yusuf / Cat Stevens 50th Anniversary year since release of Matthew & Son on Decca / DERAM.

Loosely based on the journeys of the Tillerman, as he recalls his travels and life lessons to a younger generation.

Like many records in the 60's - half of the songs are covers and half are originals, except that all the covers are his. He is presenting and celebrating some of his earliest recordings as they should have been recorded.

This is the first record Yusuf has produced with Paul Samwell-Smith, who produced all his early Island recordings including seminal Tea for The Tillerman. The unique chemistry they capture is clear in the classic organic sound that is produced.

Alun Davies also plays on the whole album, so it really is a reunion and return to form of the core that helped create that classic Cat Stevens sound.

For the first time since 1972, the album cover also features his illustration - 11 new works of art for each of the songs on the record, examples of which are included in the video to the album stream.

Richter, Max: Taboo OST

Taboo is hardly the word that springs to mind when we think of esteemed contemporary composer Max Richter, but his loveliness persists here in a score of stakes-raising tension. The soundtrack was made for the eponymous TV show about the mysterious time of 1814, which was a long time ago.

“Three arts are happily brought together in this programme: those of Bach's musical genius, of deeply accomplished and thoughtful pianism, and of crystalline recording.” Gramophone, 1988

“Argerich’s very sensitive response to pianistic colour and texture is everywhere in evidence on this disc. Her tonal warmth makes the music approachable and aurally pleasant and she instils each piece with an overall appreciation of structure that lends authority to her conceptions.” Records and Recording, 1980
