Trio for 2 Flutes & Cello in G, Op. 14 No. 2

Hansgeorg Schmeiser (flute), Jan Ostrý (flute) & Othmar Müller (cello)

From the beginning of the century the flute was chief among the instruments preferred by enthusiasts, as well as the highly educated non-professional connoisseurs. The flute, in its late 17th century form, being a relatively ‘modern’ instrument – and a fashionable one - joined with the keyboards in a pivotalrole. The previously dominant violin drifted more and more into the domain of professional musicians and virtuosos. And perhaps the sound of a flute, idiomatic of the human voice, was a more natural partner for the expression of bourgeois sensitivity than that of a violin.

Russia

Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky & Rachmaninov

Mussorgsky:

Pictures at an Exhibition (piano version)

Rachmaninov:

Variations on a theme of Corelli, Op. 42

Tchaikovsky:

Dumka (Russian Rustic Scene), Op. 59

Ilya Yakushev (piano)

Modest Mussorgsky, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninov each had very different attitudes towards piano performance and composition. Mussorgsky studied the instrument under Anton Gerke’s tutelage but established himself principally as a composer, one of ‘The Five’ who strove to achieve a uniquely Russian identity in their music. Tchaikovsky was not a pianist of any remarkable attainment. However, in addition to his three piano concertos, he contributed to the instrument’s repertory two sonatas and over one hundred miniatures, most of them grouped in various collections. He was also an early influence on Rachmaninoff, who became renowned as a conductor and pianist, no less than as a composer, and eventually enjoyed an international reputation and popularity in all three arenas.

Michael Stimpson: Age of Wonders

Michael Stimpson: Age of Wonders

Stimpson:

The Man Who Walked with Henslow

An Entangled Bank

Transmutations

Henslow

Philharmonia Orchestra, Stuart Stratford

Age of Wonders, a voyage in music by Michael Stimpson, was composed to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. Now masterfully recorded by the Philharmonia Orchestra, the full evolution from violin and piano, through string quartet, string orchestra, and to complete as a work for full orchestra can be heard in its entirety under the baton of conductor Stuart Stratford. Violinist Maya Iwabuchi and pianist Tom Poster bring to life Darwin’s early life in The Man Who Walked with Henslow, while Maya, Fiona Cornall, Nicholas Bootiman, and Karen Stephenson of the Philharmonia expertly perform the string quartet (The Beagle). The ‘Englishness' of Darwin’s home, Down House, is expressed in the work for string orchestra, An Entangled Bank, named after the famous quotation by Charles Darwin. Transmutations, for full orchestra, finally brings together the evolving threads, motifs, patterns, and mutations into four variations, closing Age of Wonders with a reflection of the opening work, Henslow. The music is added to on the second CD with the inspirational readings of Darwin by the late Robert Tear, Ruth Padel reading some of her poems also written for the Darwin anniversary, other interviews, and recordings of Darwin’s finches used in the music.

Glorious Quest is this debut album from British baritone Rodney Earl Clarke. Hit after hit, we are invited to experience the Golden Age of the American Musical Theatre focussing on the composers that solidified the modern story-driven, integrated art genre that we now enjoy. The album flows seamlessly as Clarke shows off his versatility as a singer starting the album with Rogers and Hammerstein’s Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, then taking us on a journey featuring all-time favourites like If I Loved You, Some Enchanted Evening and finishing with two of the most well-known powerhouse musical theatre anthems of all time: You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel and The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha. The album is inspirational and uplifting, as Clarke brings us back to the simplicity of the music, staying true to their original musical theatre roots. He is joined by the wonderful and experienced pianist Christopher Gould, and together they produce an album that will lift the spirits of all music lovers.

Le Jour Où La Pluie Viendra (The Day The Rains Came)

Jane Morgan (vocal)

Florence Catherine Currier (born 1924), known the world over as “Jane Morgan” may only have achieved one Top Ten hit either side of the Atlantic (The Day The Rains Came – UK No.1 & Fascination – US No.7), but she was acknowledged as one of the supreme vocal stylists in popular music. With her strong, clear voice, warm and generous, always used with sensitivity to the meaning of a song (she trained as a lyric soprano opera singer), she gave peerless interpretations of so many of the evergreens of the Great American Songbook that her lack of ‘hits’ hardly matters. Retrospective’s survey does include all those she did have, but mostly concentrates on presenting the cream of the many superior albums with which she graced Kapp’s catalogue for eight years from the mid-50s to early 60s – she was the ‘album artist’ par excellence. To these individual songs are added two complete albums covering specific genres: the Latin-American Jane In Spain and the delightfully folksy Ballads Of Lady Jane. The 57 varieties selected here for The Day The Rains Came will, we trust, demonstrate to today’s listeners that, over half a century ago, Jane Morgan was one of the truly great popular vocal artists of her time . . . long may she ‘rain’!
