Bergamo, D: Musica d’organo per la liturgia e per il concerto

Bergamo, D: Musica d’organo per la liturgia e per il concerto

Marco Ruggeri (organ)

Padre Davide da Bergamo (Felice Moretti) has been the most representative figure of the Italian nineteenth century organ music. Having become a minor friar after studying organ music with Davide Bianchi and Antonio Gonzales, and composition with Simone Mayr, he began a flamboyant career throughout northern Italy as excellent performer and improviser. Soon he became the major reference of his time for consulting, tests and inaugurations of new organs. Lauded by the crowds and by the musicians (in Milan for an inauguration he played almost uninterruptedly for eight days!), he was the greatest and most famous organist of the Italian Risorgimento, the absolute champion of that sound that took the theatrical style to permeate the the organ music and the instrument itself. Marco Ruggeri presents an interesting selection of works for the liturgy and for the concert, performing them on the Serassi organ of the Basilica of Santa Maria di Campagna in Piacenza: the organ designed by Father Davide himself, where he served until his death.

Claudio Ortensi (flute), Anna Pasetti (harp)

During the first half of the nineteenth century, when a successful new opera appeared on the scene, the publishing system promoted initiatives aimed at maximising its diffusion and creating widespread channels for the exploitation of its popularity. This was helped by the production of paraphrases, duets and melodies; all these pieces were near-faithful transcriptions of their models, but were enlarged and personalised through the keyboard of a piano or, as in this case, the strings of a harp or the 'keys' of a flute. We undoubtedly should add to all this that a typically bourgeois taste led proficient 'amateurs' to take pleasure in playing all sorts of musical instruments and performing, among other things, an original repertoire that was not bound to opera music but influenced by it. Claudio Ortensi’s flute and Anna Pasetti’s harp take this world back to us through this premiere recording of the works by Michelangelo Sola, Giovanni Toja, Angelo Bovio and Giuseppe Gariboldi, active protagonists of the European and Italian compositional streams converging chamber music with the political and cultural trends that crossed both Classicism and Romanticism.

Squillante: The Wings of Daedalus

Squillante: The Wings of Daedalus

Emanuela Luchetti (The Fate), Phillip Brown (Apollo), David Haughton (Minos), Pauline Vaillancourt (Daedalus), Alessandro Carmignani (Perdix), Alexia Justine Murray (Daimon), Cara Joan Kavanaugh (Daimon), David Haughton (Cocalus), Fides Krucker (Daughter of Cocalus)

For the first time, a CD of the ZKM electronic series is to be released that uses state-of-the-art technical procedures for sound production as an integral part of the musical staging of an opera.

The Wings of Daedalus similarly uses technology to build the sound substance. Here, not only methods of sound production or editing, but also movements of sound in space are used as a means of dramaturgical articulation. The artful integration of the voice into the quasi-orchestral/concrete musical development is striking. From a mixture of noise and pitched sounds Maurizio Squillante developed a sound libretto which functions as an inner narrator and captures the audience from the very beginning until the final notes fade away.

Brice Pauset: Canons

Brice Pauset: Canons

Pauset:

Canons (3) for piano

Canons (5) for piano

Canons (7) for piano

Canons (9) for piano

Nicolas Hodges (piano), Benjamin Lévy (live electronics)

It took the French composer Brice Pauset more than two decades to finish this monumental cycle that comprises 24 canons for piano. On this CD, the cycle is presented in its entirety for the first time by the British pianist Nicolas Hodges.

It is a mysterious quality of the canon that captivates Pauset: here, technique can change into an aesthetic experience. Masters of vocal polyphony from the Renaissance like Johannes Ockeghem showed how it is done – and Pauset takes up this musical mystery in his multi-part cycle of canons for piano.

During the long composition process, Pauset's split relation to the piano undergoes a change. In Neuf Canons he brings the instrument to its limits, turning the keyboard virtuoso Nicolas Hodges into a pedal virtuoso.

The historical canon technique is most radically applied in Perspectivae Sintagma I for piano and electronics. In this work, Pauset adjusts interpretation and musical text to each other live and then reincludes the differences in the composition.
