Ned Bigham: Staffa

Ned Bigham: Staffa

& other works

Bigham:

Staffa

Tegua

Halmahera

Archipelago Dance Suites

Lynda Cochrane (piano), Judith Keaney (piano) & Pippa Tunnell (harp)

Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Jean-Claude Picard

‘…his natural melodic writing immediately communicates and frequently moves the listener.’ Gramophone, Ivan March

Staffa is the much anticipated collection of new orchestral works by acclaimed composer Ned Bigham. Building on the success of his first album of orchestral works Culebra, which reached no. 11 in the Specialist Classical Charts in 2014, Staffa looks set to solidify Bigham’s reputation as an artist whose tuneful music is accessible to a wide audience whilst having real compositional depth.

The title piece, for orchestra and three large screens, was created in collaboration with BAFTA and Grierson award-winning visual artist Gerry Fox, and will be premiered by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Martyn Brabbins, at the 70th Anniversary Celebration Concert of the Edinburgh International Festival.

Scored for full symphony orchestra, celeste and two harps, Staffa dramatically evokes the fleeting moods of the Inner Hebridean island’s elemental location, with the marriage between sound and image unique and magical. Gerry Fox’s visuals pay homage to Mendelssohn's famous 1829 visit to its haunting Fingal's Cave by exploring the unique hexagonal, basalt column formations of the interior and its surroundings.

Whilst inspired by Mendelssohn’s journey, Ned’s music is new and ground-breaking.

The other works on the disc complement Staffa (in its stereo version) and demonstrate Bigham’s playful way with existing forms. The two sets of Archipelago Dance Suites whisk the listener off to Bigham’s imagined islands in these vivid orchestral tone poems. Halmahera is scored for two pianos and orchestra, with the canonic piano parts delightfully performed by Lynda Cochrane and Judith Keaney. The irresistable Tegua takes the polka form as its starting point. The nocturnes are mysterious and haunting, with the glorious harp writing in Serenade performed by Pippa Tunnell.

Monteverdi: Madrigali Libro IX

Monteverdi: Madrigali Libro IX

Monteverdi:

Il nono libro de madrigali, 1651

Le Nuove Musiche, Krijn Koetsveld

A new instalment of the Monteverdi XL project, the recording of the complete Madrigals by Le Nuove Musiche conducted by Krijn Koetsveld.

The preface suggests that Monteverdi himself compiled the 9th Book of Madrigals. He called it “Madrigali e canzonette a due e tre voci”. It is a mixture of the olden time madrigals with their equality of voices and the Canzonettas, with their predominance of one solo voice (like an opera aria), and which were all the rage by then.

The vocal ensemble Le Nuove Musiche consists of the elite of Dutch Early Music vocalists, led by eminent conductor and scholar Krijn Koetsveld. Their first Monteverdi recording, the Books 5 & 6 (BC93799) received excellent reviews in the international press, among which a “5 star” in the French Diapason and a “10” in Dutch classical magazine Luister.

The complete songs texts and their English translation are included in the booklet.

Filippo Farinelli (piano)

André Jolivet (1905‐1974) is considered one of the most interesting French composers of the 20th century. His vast oeuvre includes nearly all musical genres. Actively open to all musical genres (he never had a proper conservatory education) he developed a personal style that was distinctly avant‐garde.

This new recording spans Jolivet’s entire lifetime, and presents his complete chamber music with piano in combination with violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, double‐bass and Ondes Martenot. Fascinating, vibrant and colourful music! Excellent performances by Italian soloists and pianist Filippo Farinelli, the driving force behind several Brilliant Classics projects: complete songs by Ravel, Jolivet and Dallapiccola, Koechlin Saxophone Music and others.

The extensive liner notes are written by a musicologist.

Verdi: I Due Foscari

Verdi: I Due Foscari

Plácido Domingo (Francesco Foscari), Francesco Meli (Jacopo Foscari), Anna Pirozzi (Lucrezia Contarini), Chiara Isotton (Pisana), Andrea Concetti (Jacopo Loredano), Edoardo Milletti (Barbarigo)

Coro e Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, Michele Mariotti, Alvis Hermanis (dir.)

In his ‘new life’ as a baritone Plácido Domingo has triumphed in the role of Francesco Foscari in Los Angeles, London and Vienna. Now he takes to the role in La Scala, Milan, the theatre that is the symbol of Italian opera. I due Foscari, premiered in 1844, famously one of Verdi’s darkest operas, is staged by Alvis Hermanis, who made such an impact at the Salzburg Festival with Die Soldaten and Il trovatore. Domingo is joined by two of Italy’s most exciting singers, the soprano Anna Pirozzi and the tenor Francesco Meli, and the acclaimed Italian conductor Michele Mariotti. The Financial Times was deeply moved by Domingo’s performance, calling his interpretation of the role ‘sublime’.

The Sound of The King’s Singers

The Sound of The King’s Singers

CD 1: The King’s Singers’ Madrigal History Tour

The Consort of Musicke. Anthony Rooley

CD 2: A Tribute to the Comedian Harmonists

Emil Gerhardt (piano)

CD 3: America

English Chamber Orchestra. Carl Davis

With an unmistakable sound and repertoire that ranges from classical to pop, Renaissance to the Beatles, and from folksongs to pop songs through to the avant-garde, the fantastic vocal sextet the King’s Singers have enjoyed a unique global career. Formed in 1968, this exceptional group of English vocalists will be celebrating its 50th birthday in the coming year. The Sound of The King’s Singers combines three of the group’s most famous albums.

Whatever music finds its way to the Singers’ six stands, the product is always fresh and sung with a bright and full yet transparent vocal sound. This includes the lively madrigals from Italy, France, England, and Germany that they recorded in 1984 during their Madrigal History Tour, which, due to the collaboration with the instrumental ensemble Consort of Musicke led by Anthony Rooley, is considered a gem of early music. This is in contrast to a further great achievement of the sextet - the King’s Singers’ 1985 interpretations of the cheeky musical and film hits of the Comedian Harmonists, which stand as a tribute to the legendary German vocal sextet from the 1930s. In further contrast, the 1989 album America is a homage to the great US pop songs by Paul Simon, Randy Newman and Jimmy Web, with refined arrangements by David Cullen which were specially written for the King’s Singers and the English Chamber Orchestra under Carl Davis.

“Solipsism” is just me talking through my piano. To discover that millions of people are listening is wonderful – and pretty humbling at the same time.” – Joep Beving

“Solipsism” refers to the philosophical idea that reality only exists in one’s mind

Solipsism was recorded at home in the still of night. The album is filled with introspective and often filmic piano compositions. Beving’s sound could be described as the opposite to over-produced and complexly layered music styles. His ambition for Solipsism is to keep the music stripped back to its essence: simple sounds to express complex emotions.

Schubert: Piano Sonatas D959 and D960

Schubert: Piano Sonatas D959 and D960

Schubert:

Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major, D959

Piano Sonata No. 21 in B flat major, D960

Read Presto's complete review of this recording here.

Legendary Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman in his first solo album for DG for over twenty-five years. Revelatory readings of Piano Sonatas D959 & D960, Schubert’s last major compositions for the piano before his death aged thirty-one. Recorded at the Kashiwazaki City Performing Arts Centre in Japan in January 2016.

Krystian performed these last two eternal masterworks intensely over the last few years to highest critical acclaim. This album is set to take its place among the great Schubert recordings.

“The second movement of D959, a kind of melancholy Valse triste, sounds otherworldly and hauntingly mesmerising in Zimerman's hands. His voicing of chords is exquisite, and by bringing out the accents and other dynamic markings, he highlights some of the more unexpected harmonies, making it sound eerily modern in places...The way he shapes a phrase is a joy to listen to, and he knows exactly how to pace the longer movements.” James Longstaffe, Presto Classical, 8th September 2017

Vinci, Leonardo: Didone abbandonata

Vinci, Leonardo: Didone abbandonata

Roberta Mameli (Didone), Carlo Allemano (Enea), Raffaele Pé (Iarba), Gabriella Costa (Selene), Marta Pluda (Araspe), Giada Frasconi (Osmida), Alessandra Artifoni (harpsichord), Giovanni Bellini (theorbo)

Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Carlo Ipata

Didone abbandonata was one of the greatest successes in the rather brief operatic career of Leonardo Vinci, a musician who had an adventurous life about which we still know very little. Written for Rome’s Teatro delle Dame, the opera was premiered during the 1726 Carnival season and marked the first collaboration between Vinci and Pietro Metastasio, a teamwork destined to produce abundant fruits, for in the four following years Metastasio would write as many as five new librettos for Vinci. It was immediately very successful, as was the Florentine production here presented, which was the first modern performance of Didone abbandonata, finally reviving one of the great masterpieces of early 18th-century opera. This production was recorded live at Teatro di Firenze and features a cast of Baroque specialists including Roberta Mameli, Carlo Allemano, and Raffaele Pe.
