Jonas Kaufmann pays homage to a magnificent era of opera that defined musical splendor and elegance, in his new album of 19th-century French opera arias and duets. His selection of music for tenor spans this momentous period, starting with “Rachel, quand du Seigneur” from Halévy’s La Juive (1835), through two of Bizet’s greatest works, “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” from Carmen (1875) and “Au fond du temple saint” from Les Pêcheurs de perles (1863), by way of Gounod’s “Ah! lève-toi, soleil!” from Roméo et Juliette (1867) and ending with the latest aria “Pourquoi me réveiller” from Massenet’s masterpiece Werther (1892). Plus many more along the way. “The French operatic repertory is very close to my heart,” says Kaufmann. “This fascinating music reflects a unique period in European culture. I didn’t want to choose only highlights for this album but also works and roles that have been key experiences for me. Wilhelm Meister in Mignon, for example, was my first major French role – I sang it in Toulouse in 2001. Carmen and Werther helped to open doors for me. The fact that I sang my first Werther at the Paris Opéra of all places, as a German surrounded by a French ensemble, was undoubtedly rather risky, but I had some excellent guides to help me: répétiteurs, colleagues, conductors and, not least, the recordings of the legendary French tenor Georges Thill.”

“There should be no carping at his finely judged phrasing, his psychological acuity and, when he hits a sweet spot, sheer seductive swagger. His and Tézier’s searing delivery of the famous duet from Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers is as good as any you will hear on record...As the repertoire gets heavier, so the album builds to a terrific climax.” The Times, 8th September 2017 ****

“To my mind, the finest recording he’s made in a decade...it’s the tantalising glimpses of roles which may never feature in Kaufmann’s stage repertoire that are the real plums of this album for me: Berlioz’s Énee, Meyerbeer’s Vasco de Gama and Rodrigue from Massenet’s Le Cid bear testimony to a voice that’s ageing quite spectacularly.” Katherine Cooper, Presto Classical, 15th September 2017

Trio Da Kali & Kronos Quartet

Together the Kronos Quartet and Trio da Kali have created an album that is rich in texture, hauntingly melodic and strikingly inventive as violins, viola and cello combine with balafon, ngoni and the powerful female voice of Hawa ‘Kassé Mady’ Diabaté in transcendental style.

David Harrington, who founded the Kronos Quartet in 1973, describes the album as “one of the most beautiful Kronos has done in forty years.”

All three Da Kali members come from hereditary musical families; Balafon player and musical director Lassana Diabate was a long-time member of Toumani Diabate’s Symmetric Orchestra and has recorded with Salif Keita, Taj Mahal and many others. A musician of great subtlety and invention he has honed a virtuoso two-balafon technique to perfection. Bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté is the eldest son of the instrument’s greatest exponent, Bassekou Kouyaté and he holds down the groove in his father’s band ‘Ngoni Ba’. Singer Hawa ‘Kassé Mady’ Diabate is the daughter of Mali’s greatest traditional singer, Kassé Mady Diabate, and the power, range and phrasing of her voice led David Harrington to compare her to the late queen of American gospel, Mahalia Jackson.

Kronos Quartet have earned an enviable reputation collaborating with contemporary composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Laurie Anderson and with world music icons from Argentinian tango hero Astor Piazzola to Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle. They have worked with a breadth of artists, including Arvo Part, Tom Waits, Big Star, Rhiannon Giddens and Clint Mansell. Their film work includes ‘Heat’, ‘Requiem for a Dream’, ‘The Fountain’ & ‘The Great Beauty’

Verdi 1, Studio Recital

Verdi:

Nel dì della vittoria … Ambizioso spirto … Vieni t'affretta! … Or tutti sorgete (from Macbeth)

La luce langue (from Macbeth)

Una macchia è qui tutt'ora (from Macbeth)

Ben io t'invenni … Anch'io dischiuso … Salgo già (from Nabucco)

Surta è la notte...Ernani! Ernani, involami (from Ernani)

Tu che le vanità (from Don Carlo)

Coinciding with the new Callas Live Remastered Edition, the catalogue’s 2017 priority, Warner Classics re-releases two of Maria Callas’ legendary studio recitals on vinyl, using the state of the art remastering done in 2014.

This recital brings together three operas from the earlier years of Verdi’s career (Nabucco, Ernani and Macbeth) and one of his greatest mature masterpieces (Don Carlo). Callas sang all of them on stage apart from Ernani, and Lady Macbeth proved a triumph for her when she opened La Scala’s season in December 1952.

Gramophone greeted this recital by saying: 'Mme Callas has seldom had such a field day and her dramatic instinct is well-nigh perfect in interpreting these wonderful pages, each characterised convincingly – and differently.'

O nume tutelar (from La Vestale)

Coinciding with the new Callas Live Remastered Edition, the catalogue’s 2017 priority, Warner Classics re-releases two of Maria Callas’ legendary studio recitals on vinyl, using the state of the art remastering done in 2014.

Callas first sang at Milan’s legendary La Scala for the opening of the 1951-52 season (in Verdi’s I vespri siciliani) and she became closely identified with the theatre, notably in productions directed by Luchino Visconti and his protégé Franco Zeffirelli. Spontini’s La vestale was staged for her there in 1954, Bellini’s La sonnambula in 1955, and her final La Scala performances came in 1962 with Cherubini’s Medea.

'Callas at her most spell-binding and enthralling,' wrote Gramophone, 'Callas at La Scala (…) shows the diva at her most exciting and most beautiful.'

Yusuf/Cat Stevens

An album of new recordings and reimagined classics exploring the storytelling of Yusuf ‘Cat Stevens’ in the 50th anniversary year of his recorded music career.

The voice of a generation once again paired with producer Paul Samwell-Smith breathing new life in to the classic ‘Cat Stevens’ sound.

Yusuf / Cat Stevens 50th Anniversary year since release of Matthew & Son on Decca / DERAM.

Loosely based on the journeys of the Tillerman, as he recalls his travels and life lessons to a younger generation.

Like many records in the 60's - half of the songs are covers and half are originals, except that all the covers are his. He is presenting and celebrating some of his earliest recordings as they should have been recorded.

This is the first record Yusuf has produced with Paul Samwell-Smith, who produced all his early Island recordings including seminal Tea for The Tillerman. The unique chemistry they capture is clear in the classic organic sound that is produced.

Alun Davies also plays on the whole album, so it really is a reunion and return to form of the core that helped create that classic Cat Stevens sound.

For the first time since 1972, the album cover also features his illustration - 11 new works of art for each of the songs on the record, examples of which are included in the video to the album stream.

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn’s legendary interpretation of the song Moon River in Breakfast At Tiffany’s, accompanying herself with a guitar, reached the pantheon of film music, as well as her duets with Fred Astaire in Funny Face. But Audrey Hepburn's filmography is also intimately linked to the greatest composers of film music: Henry Mancini, George Gershwin, Georges Auric, Nino Rota, Franz Waxman, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Alex North.

From the groovy rhythms of Hot Paprika to the languorous accents of Fascination (Love in the Afternoon), from the romantic melodies of War and Peace to the bewitching sounds of Green Mansions, from the syncopated accents of Roman Holiday to the intimate and dramatic vibrations of The Children’s Hour, a sumptuous musical journey under the grand eyes of a grand actress.

The brilliant cover art of the album comes from a 1960s fashion poster designed by French artist René Gruau for the BLIZZAND brand.

“Solipsism” is just me talking through my piano. To discover that millions of people are listening is wonderful – and pretty humbling at the same time.” – Joep Beving

“Solipsism” refers to the philosophical idea that reality only exists in one’s mind

Solipsism was recorded at home in the still of night. The album is filled with introspective and often filmic piano compositions. Beving’s sound could be described as the opposite to over-produced and complexly layered music styles. His ambition for Solipsism is to keep the music stripped back to its essence: simple sounds to express complex emotions.

Bach, J S:

Cello Suites Nos. 1-6, BWV1007-1012

Julius Berger (cello) & Immanuel Jun Berger (treble voice)

Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites for cello solo are arguably the purest form of music, works that require no explanation or background knowledge. My colleague and friend, Prof. Peter Langgartner from the Mozarteum University of Salzburg pointed out to me that the Prelude of the first suite contains Luther’s chorale “Vom Himmel hoch, da komm’ ich her” (from Heaven above, from thence I come). I had always presumed so and was grateful for confirmation that the cello suites make allusions to chorales and religious messages. I have therefore found a musical way of opening a spiritual door to the suites and added chorales to Suites 1, 3, and 5 in the mould of sounds from John Cage’s work One 8, chorales that in my opinion are definitely consistent with messages conveyed in the suites. Cage said the purpose of music is “to cleanse the soul and bring it peace, thus making it amenable to divine influences”.
