Obituary, John Scott (1956-2015)

John Scott (1956-2015)We were shocked to hear of the untimely death of organist and choir director John Scott yesterday. John had been the director of music at St Thomas' Church, New York since 2004, having previously spent more than two decades at the helm of St Paul's Cathedral, with whom he produced a great number of acclaimed choral recordings.

At St Paul's he oversaw a complete recording of the Anglican Psalter, as well as an extensive series showcasing the English anthem (both released on Hyperion); his organ recordings included cycles by Buxtehude, Vierne and Messiaen, to name just three.

His move to New York saw him apply the same principles of choir leadership there, with the result that the choir's standard improved markedly and it, too, has produced several high-quality recordings.

He is survived by his wife Lily.
