Great Recordings of the 1980s - up to 30% off

Our occasional series of Top Recordings returns, this time focusing on the 1980s - the era of Jessye Norman and Willard White; of Vladimir Horowitz and Glenn Gould; and of Levine, Bernstein and Karajan, to name just a few.

Once again, we've forced ourselves to narrow things down to just 25 recordings (which saw many marvellous performances reluctantly discarded...).

Discounts of up to 30% are available on this select group of legendary recordings until 13th March.

Gershwin: Porgy and Bess

Gershwin: Porgy and Bess

Willard White (Porgy), Cynthia Haymon (Bess), Gregg Baker (Crown), Harolyn Blackwell (Clara), Cynthia Clarey (Serena), Marietta Simpson (Maria), Damon Evans (Sportin' Life), Bruce Hubbard (Jake)

London Philharmonic Orchestra, Glyndebourne Chorus, Sir Simon Rattle

“One of the most important opera recordings of recent years” was Opera magazine’s verdict on this Porgy and Bess, which immortalised Glyndebourne Festival Opera’s first-ever production of Gershwin’s masterpiece. “Simon Rattle treats Porgy as one of the great opera scores of the 20th century… the entire performance bristles with a theatrical immediacy… The cast is a great one, led by Willard White, a dark-voiced, dignified, ultimately noble Porgy… and Cynthia Haymon’s lustrous Bess... This is a great souvenir of a great Glyndebourne event.”

“The cast is close to ideal: Willard White, an old hand as Porgy, is at his best, sympathetic, high-spirited, manly, sensitive; Gregg Baker’s Crown leaps out of the speakers; Cynthia Haymon, who avoids the hard edge that has befallen many Besses, sounds as if she means every word..this recording is worth its grand reputation.” Classics Today

“In an ideal world, operatic recordings would always evolve in this way...We've a real sense here of Gershwin's community, a feeling of oneness with the piece from singers who've not only lived with, but through, their characters. I doubt we'll ever hear the score in a better light. And what a score it is.” Gramophone Magazine, June 1989

Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin

Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin

Thomas Allen (Eugene Onegin), Mirella Freni (Tatyana), Anne Sofie von Otter (Olga), Neil Shicoff (Lensky), Rosemary Lang (Larina), Ruthild Engert (Filipyevna), Paata Burchuladze (Gremin), Michel Sénéchal (Triquet), Gunther Emmerlich (Zaretzky), Jürgen Hartfiel (Captain)

Rundfunkchor Leipzig & Staatskapelle Dresden, James Levine

James Levine at the helm of the incomparable Staatskapelle Dresden conducts a distinguished reading of Tchaikovsky’s most famous opera with an outstanding international cast including Mirella Freni and Thomas Allen. First release at mid-price, including a booklet libretto in Russian and English.

“The new Onegin merits an almost unreserved recommendation […] the central performances by Mirella Freni and Thomas Allen are compellingly vivid.” Financial Times, 11th March 1989 (Andrew Clements)

“What Freni does is sensitive, intelligent and often touching. She can still sound vulnerable—as Tatyana must...Allen responds to her...Levine draws fine playing from the Staatskapelle Dresden, though he seems to find the opera more conventional than it is.” Gramophone Magazine

“this is a big performance: slowish, with the beautiful melodies drawn out in an almost Italian fashion but with Tchaikovsky’s Russian coloring intact, with big climaxes and great tension, and the Dresden forces play stunningly for Levine.” Classics Today

“a magnificent Onegin in Thomas Allen, the most satisfying account of the title-role ever recorded. It is matched by the Tatiana of Mirella Freni, even at a late stage in her career readily conveying girlish freshness in her voice. The other parts are also strongly taken...What welds all these fine components into a rich and exciting whole is the conducting of James Levine” Penguin Guide, 2010

Mahler:

Symphony No. 5

“Bernstein was never one to underplay the emotion of any piece that he conducted, and that intensity leads to a thrilling performance of the Fifth Symphony with the Vienna Phiharmonic. He wrings every last drop of emotion from the Adagietto, and some excellent brass playing leads to an extremely exciting climax” James Longstaffe, Presto Classical, June 2014

Elgar: Violin Concerto & Introduction and Allegro

Elgar: Violin Concerto & Introduction and Allegro

Elgar:

Introduction & Allegro for strings, Op. 47

Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61

Nigel Kennedy (violin)

“This remains Nigel Kennedy’s finest achievement on record, arguably even finer than the long line of versions with star international soloists from either outside or within Britain. With Vernon Handley as guide it is a truly inspired and inspiring performance and the recording is outstandingly faithful and atmospheric.” Penguin Guide

“Listening to this recording again after a number of years, and following the reading with a score, makes one realise again just how much in this performance is exactly right...Kennedy’s first thoughts are admirably demonstrated in a recording and performance that belong in the collection of every Elgarian who loves this concerto.” MusicWeb International, 29th May 2013

“Kennedy's first recording of the Elgar Concerto is aflame with a young man's passionate inspiration, though never lacking subtler nuance, while Handley simply breathed Elgar like no-one else.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2013 *****

Albéniz: Iberia

Albéniz: Iberia

Navarra

Suite española No. 1, Op. 47

The name of Alicia de Larrocha is synonymous with Spanish music and her substantial and wide-ranging discography for Decca includes several recordings of music by Albéniz and Granados which are regarded as definitive. Larrocha first recorded Iberia for Decca in 1972 and revisited the work in 1986. It is this second, multi award-winning recording which now appears in Decca "Originals", and for the first time at mid-price.

“A real meeting of minds, these CDs capture perfectly the insight and poetry that de Larrocha brings to this quintessentially Hispanic music, and Decca's warm but not oppressively close recording is ideal.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 *****

“In her digital Decca version, Alicia de Larrocha brings an altogether beguiling charm and character to these rewarding miniature tone-poems and makes light of their sometimes fiendish technical difficulties. The recording is among the most successful of piano sounds Decca has achieved” Penguin Guide

Wiener Philharmoniker, Charles Mackerras

“The first in the original astringent but atmospheric scoring. Mackerras is slightly less warmly idiomatic than his Czech rivals, but it's better sung.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2008 *****

“With a fine cast of native Czech-speakers headed by Lucia Popp's adorable Vixen and Eva Randová's assertively sung Fox, Sir Charles Mackerras's 1981 studio recording of the original Brno version remains my top choice for Janáček's magical celebration of nature and renewal.” Katherine Cooper, Presto Classical, May 2014
