One of the leading baritones and dramatic interpreters of his generation, Gerald Finley is an artist who sets alight the stage and delights the ear in whatever the role he portrays.

On this (his first arias disc, and first for Opera in English) he explores a broad range of repertory: old favourites, hidden treasures, and roles which he himself has created, among them J.Robert Oppenheimer in John Adams’s Doctor Atomic and Harry Heegan in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie.

Gerald has won accolades across the globe including Gramophone Editor’s Choice Award at the 2006 Gramophone Awards for Stanford: Songs of the Sea (CHSA5043).

English National Opera director Edward Gardner offers a great understanding of Opera in English, and here conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in his debut on Chandos.

“All essentials for a recital are present here: the featured artist in good voice, imagination capable of bringing 13 different characters to life..., apt recording decisions and on-the-pace accompaniment...Both Gerald Finley and Edward Gardner are natural time-travellers in lyric theatre” Gramophone Magazine, April 2010

“As this recital of operatic arias in English handsomely demonstrates, Finley has it all: a rich-toned and smoothly produced voice, crisp diction, sterling technique, immaculate legato, a keen sense of musical style and unfailing sensitivity to drama and character.” The Telegraph, 9th April 2010 ****

“Opera recital discs too often play safe with repertoire. Not here. This intelligent compilation...satisfyingly mixes popular with unfamiliar. Finley, a versatile stage presence, brings integrity to every dark, burnished note he sings. All these arias come alive, even robbed of their original context.” The Observer, 2nd May 2010

Harmonielehre

Doctor Atomic Symphony

Short Ride in a Fast Machine

In this new release Peter Oundjian and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra tackle two seminal works by the American composer John Adams. Harmonielehre, a symphony in all but name, is an expansive, richly expressive, and often breathtaking work. It takes its title from a 1911 text by Arnold Schoenberg on harmonic theory and evokes the lush soundworld of that composer’s early tonal period. Also heard throughout the score are echoes of Mahler, Wagner, Strauss, Sibelius, Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. The piece also takes inspiration from some of Adams’s own strange and surreal dreams. The Doctor Atomic Symphony, based on Adams’s controversial opera Doctor Atomic, focuses on the character of the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer as preparations are made for the first test of the atomic bomb.

Although played without a break, the symphony falls into three distinct sections: ‘The Laboratory’, ‘Panic’, and ‘Trinity’. The symphony’s concluding section takes its title from the name given to the bomb test site by Oppenheimer himself, with reference to a deeply spiritual John Donne sonnet. This poem is set to music at the end of Act I of the opera and here in the symphony the aria’s intense vocal line is performed by solo trumpet. Also featured on the disc is John Adams’s energetic fanfare Short Ride in a Fast Machine.

“The music is played with huge élan by the RSNO...The results are highly charged and exciting performances of three works that place Adams at the very forefront of American contemporary classical music and deservedly so.” MusicWeb International, 18th December 2013

“the RSNO under Peter Oundjian manage very effectively to project this single sweep of sound from beginning to end. Brass and percussion stand out for all the right reasons...but it's really a sense of collective unity imparted by the orchestra during the loud sections that is most impressive.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2014

The Admirable Crichton - Suite

The Flame Tango from 'Out of the Clouds'

“None of the modern versions of the WarsawConcerto seems to have the freshness, urgency and lack of self-indulgence of this very fine version.
That's a pointer to the high level of playing and interpretation to be found throughout this ever fascinating and altogether quite delightful selection of Addinsell's film music.
Though Rachmaninov comes so immediately and vividly to mind in the most celebrated of Addinsell's creations, that was strictly for the purposes of its film context. Elsewhere you're more likely to be reminded of Vaughan Williams, Ravel or Eric Coates. Pastiche was an inevitable part of a film composer's armoury, but the very real inventive gifts displayed in the Warsaw Concerto are also evident throughout this collection. About half the music has already been recorded in other Addinsell collections, but not with the chorus that's especially effective here in the 'School Song' from Goodbye MrChips. Of the new items the sumptuously lyrical finale to the music for The Black Rose is particularly fine (expertly reconstructed, like much else here, by Philip Lane), as are the dances from the 1957 film The Admirable Crichton.
It's by no means just nostalgia that makes Addinsell's film music well worth exploring, and this generously filled CD is undoubtedly the best single-CD selection available.”

Suite española

The Magic Opal: Suite

Piano Concerto No. 1 (Concerto fantastico), Op. 78

Martin Roscoe (piano)

Rapsodia Española

Martin Roscoe (piano)

Our Spanish Music series (La Música de España) with the BBC Philharmonic and Juanjo Mena, its Spanish chief conductor and a specialist in the repertoire, now reaches the music of Isaac Albéniz, one of the greatest Spanish composers of any era.

Highly colourful and subtly contrasted, the Suite española is perhaps the most interesting early anticipation of the great piano collection Iberia, composed about twenty years later, in which, as Debussy remarked, Albéniz ‘put the best of himself’. Brilliantly successful though he was as a pianist and composer of piano music, Albeniz also composed operas, having his first success with The Magic Opal, in London, three orchestral movements from which feature here. The soloist in the Concierto fantástico is the British pianist Martin Roscoe, already highly praised for his many past recordings for Chandos, on which he features with artists such as Tasmin Little and Jennifer Pike. Written at the same time as the Piano Concerto yet very different in style, Rapsodia española positively celebrates the Spanish idiom – all the more vividly in the orchestration by George Enescu, chosen for this recording. The piano soloist, again, is Martin Roscoe.

“Mena’s BBC Phil is on exemplary form.” Sunday Times, 15th May 2016

“Martin Roscoe’s performances are of exceptional skill and affection while the BBC Philharmonic under Juanjo Mena, finely recorded, play with a suitably heated, open-hearted commitment.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2016

“The Rapsodia espanola, which also features Roscoe as soloist, is dreamily seductive before spiritedly bouncing along. The Suite espanola is equally fun…’Castilla’ and ‘Sevilla’ have great flair, ‘Granada’ is sublime and ‘Aragon’ rounds off an enjoyable disc with élan.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2016 ****

Albinoni: 12 Concerti a cinque, Op. 5

Albinoni: 12 Concerti a cinque, Op. 5

“The concertos are beautifully played here, with plenty of energy. This is the obvious choice for period-instrument fans who want them. The sound is very good, both crisp and warm” American Record Guide

“Albinoni might be described as a specialist in the medium of the Concerto a cinque, of which he composed 54, published at intervals during almost half his productive life. The first six appeared in his Op 2 (1700), together with six sonatas from which they inherited some structural features, and were followed in 1707 by the 12 of Op 5. They were 'halfway houses' on the road to the violin concerto per se as we know it – and as Vivaldi established it four years later.
Virtuoso passages for a solo violin appear only en passant in flanking movements and 'symmetrically' in the Adagios of Nos 3, 6, 9 and 12. Each Concerto is in three-movement form and all the finales are fugal, as they are in the Op 2, though in their simplicity they sound rather like rondos.
There was little by way of innovation in Albinoni's concertos, which leant on past examples and stressed some of their most durable features, but the lyricism of the Adagios of Nos 2, 5, 8 and 11 (again symmetrically placed) was indeed new. Their strength is in his gift of melodic invention, their clearly defined form and thematic material, their conciseness – a virtue that didn't survive in some of his later concertos – and their vitality and freshness.
The recording and annotation are of the highest standard, and of the performances it might be said that if they're ever bettered in any respect, we and Albinoni will indeed be fortunate.”
