Boccherini - Symphonies

Boccherini - Symphonies

Boccherini:

Symphony No. 3 in D, G 503

Symphony No. 8 Op. 15 No. 6 G508

Symphony No. 21 in C, G515 (Op 37 No. 1)

Luigi Boccherini was born in 1743 in Lucca. He was to become one of the greatest cellists of his time, and travelled all over Europe giving virtuoso performances. His compositional genius only fully emerged when he took up permanent residence at the court of the Infante Don Luis in Spain. He is most associated with chamber music, especially the string quintet. But his output also included about thirty symphonies. Three have been recorded here. Nos 3 and 8 were composed for Don Luis in 1771, whereas No. 21 was written for King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1786. None of the symphonies is well known and they are seldom recorded.

The Contemporaries of Mozart series is one of the longest-running on Chandos and offers performances of rarely recorded works, played by an orchestra which understands this repertoire completely.

“Unlike many modern chamber orchestras, the London Mozart Players make small attempt to sound like a period band, being content to be what they are and concentrate on playing this music with the warm affection it needs...the essential Boccherinian spirit is there.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2010

“The London Mozart Players's strings are outstanding.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2010 *****

Vogler:

Overture and Entr’acte to Hamlet

Overture to Athalie

Symphony in G

Overture to Erwin and Elmire

Symphony in D minor

Komische Ballette am Churpfälzischen Hofe – Ballett Suites I and II

The celebrated Contemporaries of Mozart series continues apace with the compositions of German composer George Joseph Vogler. The London Mozart Players which celebrates their 60th anniversary in 2009 perform under the direction of Matthias Bamert.

Also known as Abbé Vogler, Vogler was idealized in Robert Browning’s poem ‘Abt Vogler’, with its subtitle ‘After he has been extemporizing upon the musical instrument of his invention.’ In his own day, Vogler was indeed famous for his improvisations. He was also a celebrated teacher, whose pupils included Weber and Meyerbeer; but he seems to have had little renown as a composer, that is, until now.

Vogler was born near Würzburg in 1749, the son of a violinist and instrument maker. After studying at Würzburg University, he moved to Bamberg for three years of religious instruction: hence the references to Abbé. In the early 1770s he was appointed almoner, then chaplain, to the court at Mannheim. By 1775 he was appointed the vice-Kapellmeister. Mannheim was the home of a flourishing musical establishment, and the court orchestra had an international reputation: Vogler’s colleagues included Christian Cannabich. He would later hold the position of court music director at Stockholm (1786-89) and at Darmstadt (1807-14).

The scope of Vogler’s musical accomplishment, encompassing sacred vocal works, operas, instrumental ensemble pieces and solo keyboard music, challenges generalization. The surviving symphonies and concertos by Vogler reveal polished craftsmanship and a flair for orchestral colour. He was fond of highlighting wind instruments, and the use of two pairs of horns in complementary keys is a trademark. All the works which here receive their first recording reflect this approach.

Although relatively few of Vogler’s works achieved wide public recognition, various works were performed in concerts well into the 19th century, and Robert Schumann praised Vogler’s music as late as 1838.

“Atmospheric and colourful works by a composer dismissed by Mozart.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009

“Matthias Bamert and the London Mozart Players perform all these pieces with their customary care and polish…” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 *****

Leopold Mozart - Symphonies

Leopold Mozart - Symphonies

Mozart, L:

Sinfonia in D major, Eisen D25

Sinfonia in C major, Eisen C1

Sinfonia in D major, Eisen D17

Sinfonia in G major, Eisen G14

Sinfonia in C major, Eisen C4 'Partia'

Sinfonia di Camera in C-Dur (D1)

The best-selling Contemporaries of Mozart series is one of Chandos’ longest-running recording projects and we are delighted to add a selection of symphonies by the Salzburg composer Leopold Mozart to the collection. Conducted by Matthias Bamert and the London Mozart Players, the broad range of Leopold’s symphonic style is on clear display in the charming symphonies recorded here. All the works are recorded for the first time.

Although Leopold Mozart‘s reputation as a violinist, teacher and composer was eclipsed early on by his renown as the father of Wolfgang Amadeus, prior to Wolfgang’s birth Leopold held a respected position at the Salzburg court and had achieved European fame not only for his highly-regarded teaching, but also his compositions.

Among the chief works by which Leopold established his compositional popularity, his symphonies take pride of place: they far outstrip in quality, to say nothing of quantity, the symphonies of his Salzburg contemporaries or, for that matter, most other early composers in Europe. His oeuvre was extensive and it is clear from his letters that Leopold considered himself a modern, fashionable composer, a claim borne out not only by the works themselves but by later musicologists. His style was that of a generation younger and shows a clear progress toward sonata form.

Under the guidance of Matthias Bamert this beautiful music is sure to flourish amongst the Contemporaries of Mozart series and will no doubt guarantee Leopold Mozart the recognition he deserves, as a composer in his own right.

“Matthius Bamert and the London Mozart Players's programme of Leopold Mozart symphonies reveals a deft musical craftsman whose works are graced by genial melodies, animated by an exuberant espirit de coeur and imbued with the intimacy of chamber music. The orchestra gives polished, suavely proficient performances, and the virtuoso horn playing deserves mention, notably in two C major symphonies - C1, with its dramatic opening movement, and D1, with its rousing finale.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2009 ****

“…Bamert and the LMP (stunning horns) generate more excitement, though textures can blur in the bright, resonant church acoustic.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009

Conversation Symphony in E flat major

“As always in this series, the London Mozart Players under Matthias Bamert provide impeccably stylish performances.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2008 ****

“Limited invention, but this English gentleman's music is certainly agreeable. Though Marsh's invention can be banal and short-breathed, there is an indefinable quality of robust Englishness to many of his melodies. Several movements have a distinct whiff of Handel, especially the catchy country-dance finale of No 8, with its piquant changes of instrumental colouring (shades here of the Water Music). There are rollicking Handelian fanfares, too, in the first movement and minuet of the most ambitious and massively scored symphony, No 6, though Marsh's acknowledged inspiration here was Haydn's late symphonies.
The 'London Bach', Johann Christian, is another unmissable influence, above all in the ConversationSymphony, an original take on Bach's symphonies for double orchestra.
As ever in their 'Contemporaries of Mozart' series, Matthias Bamert and the LMP give carefully prepared, well-paced performances, rhythmically lively without falling into autopilot, and balancing polish with a down-to-earth directness crucial to Marsh's music. Among a clutch of expert soloists, the horns deserve a tip of the hat for their brave braying in the brief 'hunting' symphony, No 7. The recording has an attractive bloom. A modestly pleasing curio, recommended to anyone who likes to venture down 18th-century symphonic byways.”
