Szymanowski & Karlowicz: Violin Concertos

Szymanowski & Karlowicz: Violin Concertos

Karlowicz:

Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 8

Szymanowski:

Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 35

Violin Concerto No. 2, Op. 61

This SACD recording brings together some of Chandos’ greatest artists in a spellbinding programme.

It follows performances that The Guardian described as ‘a thrilling show of ferocity and feistiness’, given by the same forces in January at the Barbican. After widely acclaimed recordings of Walton’s and Lutosławski’s violin concertos, Tasmin Little again joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner, in intensely expressive interpretations of the concertos by the Polish composers Karłowicz and Szymanowski.

All were written within the space of a generation (1902, 1916, and 1933), and yet they belong to quite different worlds. One was composed at a time of national occupation, another in the throes of wartime, and yet another at a time of national renewal. The first inhabits the lyrical tradition developed by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, the second escapes towards Debussy and the exoticism of Mediterranean influences, while the third is imbued with the folk culture of the Tatra Mountains.

Mozart: Piano Concertos, Vol. 2

Mozart: Piano Concertos, Vol. 2

Mozart:

Piano Concerto No. 14 in E flat major, K449

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano)

Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major, K459

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano)

Divertimento in D major, K136

Divertimento in F major, K138

The effervescent and communicative energy of Bavouzet and Takács-Nagy is encapsulated again in this second volume of their Mozart series. These exhilarating interpretations of Mozart’s piano concertos of 1784, faultlessly supported by the Manchester Camerata, follow highly praised concerts as well as a first volume which was ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Pianist.

The two concertos presented here are among the six that Mozart composed in Vienna in an extraordinarily productive year. As Bavouzet states in an exclusive personal note, they ‘share their association with operatic and symphonic styles. The contrasts of mood in their first movements and the cantilenas which serve as second movements relate them more closely with music for the operatic stage, while their finales are conceived in purely instrumental terms and make reference to the symphonic domain. On the other hand, these two works are complete opposites as far as their use of wind instruments is concerned. In KV 449 their inclusion is ad libitum, whereas they very often play the principal role in KV 459.’

“Both concertos receive lively, stylish performances here.” Sunday Times, 3rd September 2017

Sonata in F major on a Theme by Mozart

Étude, Op. 97 No. 1

Ivan Ilić (piano)

The Serbian-American Paris-based pianist Ivan Ilić has signed a new multi-album recording contract with Chandos Records, following internationally acclaimed recordings of works by Godowsky and Feldman. His first project on the label is a series devoted to the solo piano works of the Czech composer Antoine Reicha, a contemporary and lifelong friend of Beethoven.

Although best known for his contributions to the repertoire for wind quintet, Reicha wrote vast quantities of solo piano music, most of which has never been recorded. The manuscripts, preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, were published only recently.

Offering premiere recordings of the Grande Sonate in C major, the Sonata in F major, and three excerpts from Practische Beispiele, this first volume confirms Reicha as an authoritative, singular voice, whose piano works complement and enrich our understanding of Haydn and Beethoven. Volume 1 is a coproduction of Chandos, RTS (Swiss Radio), and the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de Musique Romantique Française in Venice.

“Ivan Ilić’s playing exudes technical brilliance and warmth in equal measures; the dominant impression is of a pianist keen to share this extraordinary music with a wider public. The affection is palpable. Chandos’s rich sound is impressive, and further volumes are promised. A winner.” The Arts Desk, September 2017

Irmina Trynkos (violin)

If you will it, it is no dream

The Big Bang and Creation of the Universe

Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, Vladimir Ashkenazy

To celebrate his 80th birthday the legendary conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and the promising young violinist Irmina Trynkos, presents for the first time on record works by Nimrod Borenstein, a composer whom Ashkenazy has admired and supported for many years.

The past few years have seen his compositions premiered and performed at prestigious venues including the Royal Opera House and the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Salle Gaveau in Paris, and Carnegie Hall in New York. Written especially for the occasion, If you will it, it is no dream was premiered by Ashkenazy to great acclaim in 2013 at the Royal Festival Hall.

While Borenstein is a supremely melodic composer, he draws attention in his work to his special use of counterpoint, which he says could be described as ‘multimelodic’, suggesting the eternal but ever-changing flow of time, in which events constantly overlap with one another. This technique is characteristic of both If you will it, it is no dream and The Big Bang and Creation of the Universe.

“These are no compromise premiere recordings of joyous and seductively perfumed works which never lose touch with the need for movement rather than stasis.” MusicWeb International, September 2017

Elgar: The Black Knight, Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands

Elgar: The Black Knight, Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands

Elgar:

The Black Knight, Op. 25

Scenes (6) from the Bavarian Highlands, Op. 27

Richard Hickox brought these two neglected works into the record catalogue to critical acclaim. In an Editor’s Choice review in 1996 – the year of its release – Gramophone stated: ‘Elgar completed The Black Knight in 1893 and it provided him with his first big success. The text tells of a sinister, unnamed ‘Prince of mighty sway’, whose appearance at the King’s court during the feast of Pentecost has disastrous consequences. Elgar’s score boasts much attractive invention, some of it strikingly eloquent and prescient of greater offerings to come. The choral writing is always effective, the orchestration already vivid and assured.

This 1994 recording is one of the first Holst collections made by Hickox and the City of London Sinfonia. An orchestra he conducted for thirty seven years, until his death. Having brought neglected works by Holst to a more deserved fame in the early 1990s, Hickox returned to Holst in 2007, embarking on a new series with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He was recording what would have been the second volume of this new survey when he was suddenly taken ill. While he was never able to finish that second volume himself, the first instalment was released in January 2009 on SACD (CHSA 5069) and seen as a recording triumph.

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

This reissue is a moving experience in itself, and not only for returning to the catalogue a superlative recording of Brahms’s masterpiece, not the best known at the time of its release in 1991, but also for the exceptional soloists, majestically accompanied by Hickox and his LSO and Chorus. Gramophone praised the ‘fine soloists’, especially the ‘resonance and ease’ of the bass baritone, David Wilson-Johnson. The review also acclaimed the ‘sheer generosity of style and sound’ as well as the choir and orchestra, ‘excellent and wellbalanced, both in themselves and with each other’. Overall, the ‘Hickox gives a remarkably satisfying performance’. Despite its large-scale conception, Brahms’s Requiem remains the product of a very private world, the personal communication of the philosophy of one man, ‘such a great soul – and yet he doesn’t believe in anything’, as Dvorák once remarked.

Walton: The Bear

Walton: The Bear

Sir William Walton wrote two operas, the second – The Bear – far more readily acclaimed than the first, and more often performed. Its premiere took place in Aldeburgh in June 1967 as part of the twentieth Aldeburgh Festival, and followed the disastrous reception of Walton’s first opera, Troilus and Cressida, a piece seen as too traditional for the taste of those austere post-war times. So second time round Walton was taking no chances: everything in The Bear is on a modest scale: a chamber opera in one act, for three singers only, no chorus, and the orchestra is chambersized, with a small number of strings (originally solo players). Not only did this specific recording bring the piece to fame but it also proved a revelatory disc for the soloists, Della Jones, Alan Opie, and John Shirley- Quirk, who would go on to become multi-award-winning soloists and whose achievements in British music would become increasingly successful.

Ferio Saxophone Quartet

Having already won many prizes and awards (The Philharmonia/Martin Musical Ensemble, Royal Over-Seas League’s Ensemble Competition, Tunnell Trust Award) and appointed St John's Smith Square Young Artist of the year for 2016 – 17, the Ferio Saxophone Quartet is Europe's most exciting up-and-coming ensemble of its kind. This, its debut commercial CD, features original works written for saxophone quartet. Composers range from Gabriel Pierné and Jean-Baptiste Singelée to Eugène Bozza and Guillermo Lago (who wrote The Wordsworth Poems specially for the Quartet this year). Through this choice of repertoire, the Ferio Quartet is inviting listeners to experience a number of musical styles and moods, playing works from the time of the saxophone’s invention right up to the present day.

“Ferios certainly have skill on their side, and every emotional hue you could want-smoky, honeyed, shrieking or sad.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2017 ***

“Playing is of the highest level throughout, as is the stunning recorded sound.” Classical Music, September 2017 *****

“Playing and music alike sport an irresistible exuberance.” Financial Times, 4th August 2017 ****

“If anything, these brief comparisons confirm just how gifted the Ferios really are; they also underline the sheer presence and tonal sophistication of this new recording…in short, Flux is the perfect calling card, and it should win the group lots of new friends and followers.” MusicWeb International, 30th June 2017
