Sydney Chamber Choir, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus & Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sir Andrew Davis

This disc contains works by Grainger in versions for large choral forces, performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under its new Chief Conductor, Sir Andrew Davis, and featuring the Sydney Chamber Choir and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus. The recording continues on from our nineteen-disc Grainger Edition box and brings our long-running Grainger survey to an end.

Percy Grainger had a lifelong interest in poetry and prose. When he was a young boy, his mother would sing him to sleep with Stephen Foster’s Camptown Races, the memories of which were later recalled in the musical extravaganza Tribute to Foster. In his youth, Grainger was intrigued by the Icelandic sagas, which led to a deep fascination with all things Norse, and ultimately inspired works such as The Wraith of Odin. The books by Kipling were another great inspiration during Grainger’s student days in Frankfurt; Danny Deever, from Kipling’s Barrack-Room Ballads, is a grim depiction of the execution of Deever for the murder of a fellow soldier. From passages of the ‘Song of Solomon’ sprang the mammoth setting King Solomon’s Espousals.

Marching Song of Democracy was inspired by the poetry by Walt Whitman and a chance encounter with a public statue of George Washington at the Paris Exhibition of 1900. Grainger’s original plan was to write the work for voices and whistlers only, and to have it performed by a chorus of men, women, and children singing and whistling to the rhythmic accompaniment of their tramping feet as they marched along in the open air. Later Grainger realised the need for instrumental colour, and this led him to score it for the concert hall – although he did stress that ‘an athletic, out-of-door spirit must be understood to be behind the piece from start to finish’.

The setting of Swinburne’s The Bride’s Tragedy is considered to be one of Grainger’s most intensely personal works. The story tells of a girl who is to be married to a man she detests, and Grainger saw this work as ‘a personal protest against the sex-negation… that our capitalist world offered to young talents like me’.

The Hunter in His Career is a traditional ballad which takes its words from William Chappell’s collection Old English Popular Music (1838 – 40). For his setting of Sir Eglamore, Grainger turned to John Stafford Smith’s 1812 collection Musica Antiqua, in which the knight battles giants and wild boars for his beloved. The Lads of Wamphray is based on a folk-poem from Sir Walter Scott’s Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border; it is an account of the noted feud between the families of Maxwell and Johnstone. Of Thanksgiving Song, Grainger wrote: ‘My Thanksgiving Song is honour-tokened to all my life’s sweethearts – to those I loved long and fully, but also to those I merely looked at but never spoke to.’

“Extrovert Grainger, writ large and in brilliant colours.” MusicWeb International, 19th April 2013

“This new anthology of rarities for chorus and orchestra has the added advantage of having been recorded in Melbourne, and the performances are consistently successful...Grainger’s output could be maddeningly inconsistent. Here, the high spots are magnificent.” The Arts Desk, 11th May 2013

“Performances throughout are pretty much exemplary, these combined Melbourne and Sydney forces straining every sinew under Sir Andrew Davis's lucid lead, and they have been accorded sound of splendiferous realism and at times almost startling physical impact.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2013

“While there nothing 'amateurish' about the performances here, they have a zest and communicative zeal that are sometimes more easily accessed by amateurs than by professionals...This enjoyable disc handily earns its place in one's summer listening fare!” International Record Review, June 2013

The Central Band of the Royal Air Force, Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs

This new recording with The Central Band of the Royal Air Force, conducted by Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs, features some of the greatest British pieces in the repertoire. The first military band to broadcast on BBC Radio, and the most frequently featured on the airwaves nowadays, it is at the forefront of military band and contemporary wind ensemble recording. Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs, the Band’s conductor, comments: ‘In the late 1980s I was a bassoonist in The Central Band, performing on a previous recording of music by Holst, Vaughan Williams, and Grainger. To be the Principal Director of Music and conductor on this new recording marks the culmination of an ambition and a significant high point in my Royal Air Force career. The music represents some of the most iconic wind band repertoire, Holst’s Suites in particular having close links to our military heritage. Including Langford’s Rhapsody also continues our record of ‘firsts’ achieved by a British military band, similar events having been the first radio broadcast and the first LP recording. I am hopeful that this disc will continue the proud tradition of musical excellence that is synonymous with The Central Band of the Royal Air Force, the band that it is my immense privilege to conduct.’

“Holst’s two suites are marvels of concision and inventiveness, and work well alongside Vaughan Williams and Grainger in nostalgic vein” Classical Music, May 2015 ****

“With such brilliant performances recorded vividly, there is no risk of the sequence outstaying its welcome. Pure delight for anyone in love with English folk music” Gramophone Magazine, June 2015

English Dance No. 1

“Here's a recipe guaranteed to delight Grainger acolytes and inquisitive newcomers alike: a liberal sprinkling of old friends, three of the composer's most ambitious creations and no less than four world premiere recordings. Falling into the last two categories comes the giddily inventive English Dance No 1. Bearing the inscription 'For Cyril Scott with long love', this is the work of which Gabriel Fauré exclaimed: 'It's as if the total population were a-dancing.' Hickox and company have already set down this remarkable piece in its final scoring from 1924- 9; the present orchestration dates from 1906-9 and wears an even more exuberantly colourful demeanour than its successor.
Originally conceived in 1907 for 24 winds (in which guise it can be heard on Chandos), the bracing, somewhat Delian Hill Song No 2 is played in its final incarnation from 1948 for symphony orchestra. That same year, Grainger accepted a commission for an even more ambitious wind-band creation, The Power of Rome andthe Christian Heart, based on ideas from as far back as 1918 and given here with the optional string parts. It's an imposing, oddly moreish affair, whose second half borrows material from the 1943 orchestral essay Dreamery (Chandos) as well as the first movement ('The Power of Love') of the marvellous Danish Folksong Suite. From a clutch of indelible favourites, to be singled out are the well-upholstered 1919 orchestration of the supremely touching Colonial Song, GreenBushes and that memorably tangy 1920 harmonisation of the Irish Tune from County Derry.
Hickox secures a set of performances that are simply past praise in their combination of stylish swagger and heartwarming commitment to the cause. Wonderful Chandos sound, too, irrepressibly vivid. Terrific stuff!”
