Rachmaninov: Aleko

Rachmaninov: Aleko

Sergey Murzaev (Aleko), Evgeny Akimov (Young Gypsy), Gennady Bezzubenkov (Old Man), Svetla Vassileva (Zemfira)

BBC Philharmonic & Coro del Teatro Regio di Torino, Gianandrea Noseda

Opera is one of the great musical passions of Gianandrea Noseda, who has explored it to stunning effect with the BBC Philharmonic. In September 2009 he became Music Director at Teatro Regio in Turin, one of Europe’s leading opera houses. Here he presents Aleko, recorded following a highly acclaimed performance at the Stresa Festival with the Coro del Teatro Regio di Torino and the BBC Philharmonic. The ‘all-Russian’ cast of soloists are Sergey Murzaev (soloist with the Bolshoy Theatre), Evgeny Akimov and Nadezhda Vasilieva (both soloists with the Mariinsky Theatre Company), Gennady Bezzubenkov and the world-renowned soprano Svetla Vassileva. Chandos has previously released The Miserly Knight and Francesca da Rimini.

Sometimes referred to as Rachmaninoff’s answer to Carmen, Aleko (adapted from The Gypsies by Alexander Pushkin) was written in 1892 as a graduation work at the Moscow Conservatory and won the highest prizes from the judges that year. The rhapsodic Orientalism and effortless melodies in particular appeal. As a companion to his two later operas, Aleko illustrates Rachmaninoff early finding his own individual style.

“Gennady Bezzubenkov declaims powerfully as the Old Gypsy, and Evgeny Akimov is elegant in his short cavatina. The chorus, from Turin's Teatro Regio, supplies suitably languid tone.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2010 ***

“Noseda’s no shrinking violet, and this studio recording with the BBC Philharmonic, five impassioned Russian voices, and the choir of Turin’s Teatro Regio pulsates with passion...Sergey Murzaev barrels forth as the outsider hero Aleko; Svetlana Vassileva is succulent as the Gypsy with two lovers.” The Times, 17th April 2010 ***

“[Noseda] conducts with his usual mix of passion and intellectual rigour, and there's some startlingly effective playing.” The Guardian, 13th May 2010 ***

“Noseda’s skill here is to maintain control of pacing and to keep the drama both tense and fluid...Turin’s Teatro Regio chorus adeptly assumes its role as a band of Bessarabian gipsies and the BBC Philharmonic plays superbly.” The Telegraph, 14th May 2010 ****

“Aleko is sometimes described as Russia's answer to Carmen - the tale of a Russian living among gypsies whose much younger wife takes a new lover, with predictably grim consequences, certainly bears a resemblance to the Iberian passions of Bizet's opera. But Aleko is a smaller affair, at just over an hour long, and perhaps for this reason has never really entered the operatic repertoire. This is a shame, since as this recording with Sergey Murzaev and Svetla Vassileva demonstrates, it's a melodious and captivating work.” David Smith, Presto Classical

Rachmaninov - Etudes tableaux, Op. 33 & Op. 39

Rachmaninov:

Études-Tableaux, Op. 33

Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 39

“These are meticulously prepared and observed readings – if Rachmaninov asks for ppp legatissimo or sharply contrasted dynamics from one bar to the next, then Hayroudinoff takes the composer at his word, a courtesy to Rachmaninov not granted by every pianist.
But Hayroudinoff goes much further than mere accuracy. If he cannot quite equal the composer's breathtaking nonchalance in the three he recorded (Op 33 Nos 2 and 7 in 1940, and Op 39 No 6 in 1925), he comes close. His rich tone and beefy attack serve him well in such passages as the ecstatic climax to the Op 39 E flat minor study (superbly paced and structured) and the pealing bells of Op 39 No 9; he sings with a touching simplicity in the C major and first of the A minor Op 39 studies.
Temperamentally he is right inside the music.
This is powerful Rachmaninov playing that transcends the artificial constraints of the recording studio.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“A meticulous and endlessly varied account of the two sets of Etudes-Tableaux, which explores the full range of dynamics and moods called for by the composer. Pianist Rustem Hayroudinoff is in his element.” David Smith, Presto Classical

“This is an excellent way of coming to know a flawed but interesting piece of Rachmaninov, and it is much helped by excellent presentation from Chandos.” Gramophone Magazine, Janurary 2008

“The recording quality is magnificent, the sound opening up thrillingly at climactic moments and capturing the voices in what seems like a completely natural acoustic. Excellent notes and a complete libretto (in Russian, English, German and French) complete an altogether impressive package. Very strongly recommended” International Record Review

Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-4 (complete), etc.

Rachmaninov:

Piano Concertos Nos. 1-4 (complete)

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43

“Such is the luxuriance of sound revealed in these remasterings, it's difficult to believe the recording date; and such is the quality of the piano playing that it's easy to understand why Chandos should have wanted to go to such trouble. There aren't so many Rachmaninov pianists who dare to throw caution to the wind to the extent that Earl Wild does in the outer movements of the First Concerto, fewer still who can keep their technical poise in the process. The improvisatory feel to the lyricism of the slow movement is no less remarkable.
Wild's panache is every bit as seductive in No 4, and the Paganini Rhapsody is a rare example of a performance faster than the composer's own – devilishly driven in the early variations and with tension maintained through the following slower ones so that the famous eighteenth can register as a release from a suffocating grip, rather than an overblown, out-of-context exercise in grandiosity.
Because of his lightness and touch Wild's tempos never seem excessive. Undoubtedly he shifts the balance from languishing pathos and overwhelming grandeur towards straightforward exuberance; but that may be no bad thing for refreshing our view of the composer. It keeps us in touch with an earlier tradition. The RPO appears to be revelling in the whole affair, in a way one wouldn't have immediately associated with Horenstein. To pick on the very few weaknesses, the very relaxed clarinet tone in the slow movement of Concerto No 2 rather misses the character, and elsewhere in this work the balance engineers rather crudely stick a microphone under the cello section's nostrils. But then the solo playing in this concerto is generally a little disappointing too, as though Wild had actually played the piece rather too often. In No 3 there are the hateful cuts to contend with, and one senses that the performance has been rather thoughtlessly modelled on the composer's own, idiosyncrasies and all. None the less, for the sake of the outstanding performances of Nos 1 and 4 and the Rhapsody, and for the unique combination of oldstyle bravura and modern sound, this issue earns a strong recommendation.”
