Quattro Mani: Steven Beck and Susan Grace (pianos)

The duo piano team Quattro Mani has had a distinguished history, consistently generating audience enthusiasm and rave notices for their concerts and recordings. Formed in 1989, Quattro Mani’s intense involvement with modern repertoire has led to dedications and collaborations with leading composers, including George Crumb, Joan Tower, Paul Lansky, Poul Ruders, and Frederic Rzewski. Both Susan Grace and Steven Beck have earned recognition as soloists and chamber musicians and have formed one of the most dynamic piano duos before the concert-going public. This outstanding recording features the recently publish Carl Fischer edition of Debussy's immortal Sonata. The edition, for the first time, honors all of Debussy's original indications, many of which were omitted during the work's previous editions. Hat Trick also performs the rarely heard Dubois Terzettino, a composition which preceded Debussy's by a decade, and which is the earliest known piece for flute, viola and harp. In addition, Hat Trick plays works by Toru Takemitsu, Sofia Gubaidulina, and gives the world premiere recording of Miguel del Aguila's "Submerged", composed for Hat Trick.

Vázquez, H: Cuatro Corridos - a chamber opera

Vázquez, H: Cuatro Corridos - a chamber opera

Arlene Sierra (Azucena), Lei Lang (Dalia), Hilda Paredes (Rose), Susan Narucki (Violeta)

This remarkable chamber opera, set to a libretto by Jorge Volpi, was written by four composers-- two Mexican and two from the United States. Legend has it that, since pre-Hispanic times, the inhabitants of Tenancingo, have devoted themselves–as other villages to ceramics or pottery–to a singular profession: prostitution. In 2001 the criminal network of the Salazar Juárez brothers was discovered. For years the brothers had been forcing young Mexican women into prostitution in Tijuana and in the “fields of love” near the strawberry farms of San Ysidro, California. Librettist Volpi writes that "the stories told in the opera help us to hear and see precisely what we prefer to ignore and pass over in silence."

“Susan Narucki [is] the moving soloist here…this committed performance [is] strikingly effective; even better, I imagine, heard and seen live” BBC Music Magazine, January 2017 ****

Charles Wuorinen: Eighth Symphony & Fourth Piano Concerto

Charles Wuorinen: Eighth Symphony & Fourth Piano Concerto

Wuorinen:

Piano Concerto No. 4

Peter Serkin (piano)

Symphony No. 8 (Theologoumena)

In 2004, James Levine became music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Levine immediately began to commission major new works from leading American composers, including the two works recorded here. Wuorinen's Fourth Piano Concerto, written for the BSO, James Levine, and longtime Wuorinen collaborator Peter Serkin, was one of the first of the BSO commissions Levine conducted with the orchestra, in 2005. This was followed two years later by the Eighth Symphony (Theologoumena), a BSO 125th anniversary commission premiered under Levine's direction in 2007. These spectacular recordings document the premiere performances of both of these works.

“Wuorinen is the daunting doyen of American serialist composers: prolific, uncompromising, intellectual...the Eighth Symphony is marked by explosive virtuosity, while the Fourth Piano Concerto, written for Serkin, ventures in its thorny fashion a lyric solo line.” Sunday Times, 23rd October 2016

“Serkin’s playing is consummately authoritative.” The Guardian, 27th October 2016 ***

“Wuorinen’s rugged atonality is challenging, yet the more I listen to these splendid scores, the more I’m won over by the richness of the music.” MusicWeb International, 25th November 2016

“The symphony is marked by explosive virtuosity, the concerto by thorny lyricism.” The Times, December 2016

“[the Eighth Symphony] teems with an often combustible energy in its quest to find accommodation between ancient classical belief systems and Christian monotheism. Wuorinen is helped enormously by the strident advocacy of the Boston players under his long-time champion James Levine…[the Fourth Piano Concerto] displays its kinship with the symphony in music that is, by turns, concrete-hard and severe and magically poetic with an edge of fantasy” Classical Ear, January 2017 ****

Donald Berman (piano)

Composer Scott Wheeler writes that he has “always used the piano as a sketch pad, a place to explore ideas in two-minute pieces that might turn up in other forms in larger works. Bach, Chopin, Shostakovich and others organized their small keyboard works systematically. Mine have just accumulated over the years, as I suspect is true for Grieg, Scarlatti, and my teacher Virgil Thomson. In fact, Virgil’s particular version of the 'sketchbook' method of writing short pieces was to write musical portraits 'from life,' in the manner of his visual artist friends. I was myself a subject of one of Virgil’s portraits, in 1981”. Portraits and Tributes presents 27 of Wheeler's short works, performed by Donald Berman, a pianist much admired for championing new and little-known music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Musicians of Spectrum Concerts Berlin

At the age of 92, Ursula Mamlok, who spent many decades living in New York, has returned to her native Germany, where she has been heralded as a master composer. German musicians and concert organizations have taken up her scores, performing numerous concerts and making recordings of compositions from throughout her long career. Bridge Records has been honored to issue dozens of Mamlok's compositions, with the present Volume 5 being, perhaps, the most far reaching to date, containing nine compositions spanning the years 1942-2015. Mamlok's superbly crafted music is economical, dramatic and highly expressive, with unexpected change being the norm.
