Bearthoven

Bearthoven brings their unique brand of investigative new music for piano, percussion, and bass to LPR on April 18th to kick off the release of their debut album, Trios (out on Cantaloupe Music, May 5th). Over three years in the making, the record celebrates a community built around performers who play new music and the composers who write for them.

For this release, Bearthoven will perform three highlighted works from Trios: Adrian Knight’s The Ringing World, Fjóla Evans Shoaling, and Brooks Frederickson’s Undertoad.

The night also includes the premiere of a newly commissioned work, American Dream, from Brooklyn’s timelessly lyrical and occasionally dystopian composer Scott Wollschleger.

The show begins with a solo set by Fjóla Evans performing her original music for solo cello and electronics. Based on her love of Icelandic folk-song and drones, the music explores looping white-noise, archival and field recordings to build twitching minimal soundscapes. She will be performing pieces inspired by her study of Icelandic Rímur, a type of intonement of skaldic poetry.

Adams, J L: Canticles of the Holy Wind

Adams, J L: Canticles of the Holy Wind

Amy Garapic (percussion)

The Crossing, Donald Nally

Lauded by the New York Times as a “...hypnotic and ethereally beautiful invocation of wind, sky and birdsong,” John Luther Adams’ Canticles of the Holy Wind, performed by the renowned chamber choir The Crossing, is his most technically challenging choral work, and yet the music’s mesmerizing aura of stillness encourages listening at its most elemental. The piece is composed for four choirs of eight singers each, and moves through spaces that are as fantastical (“Sky with Four Suns”) as they are serene (“The Hour of the Doves”), always with a connection to our inner world, as well as the world around us.

“John allows us to interrupt our otherwise endlessly forward-tumbling lives,” notes Donald Nally, The Crossing’s conductor, “and experience these sounds as if we were sitting in the woods for an hour. An hour of wind and of sky and of birds. We are drawn to this music, not just for the beauty of its shimmering harmonies and the overwhelming climactic moments, but also for way it inspires a ‘hearing’ of nature, in real time, as we sing it.”

“The sheer sound of the choir is most impressive. The recording is truthful, atmospheric and handles a wide dynamic range very well.” MusicWeb International, September 2017

Walking Song

Conducted by Paul Hillier since 2003, Denmark’s Ars Nova Copenhagen has built an immovable reputation as one of the world’s most versatile and inventive vocal ensembles. First Drop is testament to that spirit; it’s a wide-ranging and ambitious project that interprets the choral work of some of the giants of contemporary classical music, including Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Louis Andriessen, Michael Gordon, David Lang and more.

“Almost all the works on this CD are first recordings,” Hillier explains, referring to one source of inspiration behind the title. “Ideally we wanted the idea of First Drop to remain ambiguous, but the diligent listener will sooner or later notice that it originates with Ralph Waldo Emerson.”

Recorded over a stretch of nearly ten years, in different locations and with different configurations of singers, the performances documented here still come across as parts of a seamless whole. From the haunting strains of Michael Gordon’s He Saw A Skull (composed specifically for the 12 voices of Ars Nova) to Hillier’s vocal arrangement of Steve Reich’s classic Clapping Music, First Drop channels a vernal energy that’s unparalleled in new vocal music

“their works sound remarkably fresh, thanks in no9 small part to Ars Nova’s refined naturalness of delivery…the soundworld is generally post-minimal – and the singing immaculate…the highlight in harmonic terms is Michael Gordon’s Talmud-inspired He saw a skull…a striking piece from a composer who merits wider attention” BBC Music Magazine, August 2017 ****

“Ars Nova Copenhagen is Denmark’s crack vocal group of 12 singers for whom this varied programme of contemporary choral music holds no fears. They rise to every challenge sent their way- and the results are breath-taking in their virtuosity and musicality.” Choir & Organ, September 2017 *****

“Hillier's collection is a true labour of love. It was recorded over the course of ten years and his advocacy and the commitment of this world-class ensemble do the project proud.” Classical Music, August 2017 *****

“As well as being a pleasure in itself, this disc makes an ideal sampler of new music being written for choirs…almost every piece is getting its first recording and there are some striking items among them, not least Howard Skempton’s sensual Rise up my love…performances by the 12-strong Ars Nova Copenhagen are first-rate.” Financial Times, 26th May 2017 ****

“A retrospect of Hillier’s years with his vocal group, this disc presents 11 contemporary works. Most impressive is Jackson’s L’Homme armé, an antiwar meditation deriving from a 15th-century song, and a harmonic triumph.” Sunday Times, 11th June 2017

“The 12 singers of Ars Nova are immaculate throughout.” The Observer, 2nd July 2017 ****

Ted Hearne: Sound from the Bench

Ted Hearne: Sound from the Bench

Hearne, T:

Consent

Sound from the Bench

Ripple

Privilege

Taylor Levine (electric guitar), James Moore (electric guitar), Ron Wiltrout (percussion)

The Crossing, Donald Nally

As one of the most socially conscious and free-thinking young composers in contemporary classical music, Ted Hearne has drawn on a multitude of influences to create Sound from the Bench—his first project for Cantaloupe Music.

Written for the supple, ethereal voices of Philadelphia’s world-renowned chamber choir The Crossing, the four works presented here tap into themes as varied as racial divides (“Privilege”), government secrets (“Ripple”), love and its dark permutations (“Consent”), and corporate personhood in the eyes of the US Supreme Court (“Sound from the Bench”).

The title piece also features the edgy electric guitars of Dither’s Taylor Levine and James Moore, as well as the rhythmic flourishes of percussionist Ron Wiltrout. Taken as a whole, this is some of Hearne’s most wide-ranging and adventurous work—a siren call that resonates with unusual passion in these politically charged times

Alarm Will Sound

Conceived and realized in partnership with Q2 Music’s Peabody award-winning podcast Meet the Composer, Splitting Adams is Alarm Will Sound’s tribute to American composer John Adams, and in particular to his works Chamber Symphony (1992) and Son of Chamber Symphony (2007).

Presented with commentary tracks from MTC’s host Nadia Sirota, Alarm Will Sound’s artistic director Alan Pierson, and the composer himself, the podcast-plus-performance conveys a rare sense of interaction for the listener; not only does the music, rendered in all its lush detail by the 17 musicians in AWS, capture and connect the long trajectory between the two works, but the commentary also shines a revealing light on the story behind the music.

Meet the Composer with host Nadia Sirota takes listeners into the minds and creative processes of the composers making some of the most innovative, compelling and breathtakingly beautiful music today. At the convergence of interview, music and sound design, Meet the Composer aims to show the listener who the composer is as a person, as a thinker and as an artist.

Gordon, M: Timber Remixed

Gordon, M: Timber Remixed

Mantra Percussion (Joe Bergen, Al Cerulo, Chris Graham, Mike McCurdy, Jude Traxler and Nick Woodbury)

When Michael Gordon’s Timber, scored for six amplified wooden 2-by-4s, premiered in 2009, it brought the physicality and endurance of percussion performance to a new level. In the liner notes for Slagwerk Den Haag’s recording of the piece, released on Cantaloupe Music in 2011, Gordon described a connection to the work of shamanist author Carlos Castaneda, whose self-imposed spirit journey in the desert could wipe the brain clean and “bring on visions.”

Newly recorded by Mantra Percussion and reworked by an A-list of producers and DJs, Gordon’s deep exploration into the extreme possibilities of rhythm gets the full electronic treatment on Timber Remixed. Featuring the studio touches of Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Hauschka, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Ikue Mori, and many more, the double-CD set also includes Mantra’s live performance of Timber from the 2014 Bang on a Can Marathon.

Vrebalov: The Sea Ranch Songs

Vrebalov: The Sea Ranch Songs

Commissioned for the Kronos Quartet by the community of The Sea Ranch in celebration of the famed California seaside retreat’s 50th birthday, composer Aleksandra Vrebalov’s The Sea Ranch Songs connects with the spirit, nature, and architecture of this magical place — a grand experiment in environmental stewardship, land development and intentional community planning.

Featuring rare documented sounds from the Northern California coastal community and its wild surroundings, this sumptuous multimedia work is paired with a dreamlike cinematic exploration on bonus DVD by videographer Andrew Lyndon. Meditative, majestic and inspirational, The Sea Ranch Songs delves into the stunning panoramas and metaphysical geography of a unique place where people and nature are harmoniously intertwined.

“The Sea Ranch idea on a global scale might be utopian,” Vrebalov writes in her liner notes, “but through music, we praise its beauty and affirm its urgent relevance in our wounded world, so much in need of healing.”

“Incredibly appealing stuff, immaculately performed by San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet and well recorded.” The Arts Desk, 8th October 2016

The Little Match Girl Passion

The National Anthems

Zanaida Robles (soprano), Adriana Manfredi (mezzo-soprano), Matthew Brown (tenor), Michael Blanchard (bass drum), Claire Fedoruk (drum brake)

Los Angeles Master Chorale, Calder Quartet, Grant Gershon

The Los Angeles Master Chorale's recording of David Lang's 'the national anthems' is paired with a new recording of his 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning work 'the little match girl passion,' transforming this hour-long program into a unique panorama of Lang's writing process as it has evolved in recent years. But taken as a whole, the two works also make a lasting statement about our place in the world we share with each other. As Lang himself describes it: "Both pieces try to use music to show us how we could be or should be better people. 'the national anthems' scours the anthems of all the countries in the world, hoping to find common ground that might allow us to understand each other, across all our artificial boundaries. And 'the little match girl passion' is an attempt to ennoble the idea that it's important for us to notice the suffering of people around us." Also featuring the Calder Quartet, lauded by the New York Times as living proof that "...the time-honored string quartet still provides fertile ground for innovation and surprise.”

Alarm Will Sound, Alan Pierson

As scary a prospect as it might seem, postmodern classical music has always been a breeding ground for some of the most thrilling creative leaps in recorded sound — which is probably why composers like Cage, Oliveros, Reich, Riley, Subotnick, Varèse and many more are known just as widely for their genre-busting experiments in the studio as they are for their written scores.

Alarm Will Sound tests the limits of the canon with an adventurous foray into the outer reaches of propriety on the ensemble’s long-awaited Modernists project. Negotiating the perilous extremes between Edgard Varèse’s Poème électronique and the Beatles’ Revolution 9, conductor Alan Pierson leads AWS on a lively, loopy journey into the incidental, the grandiose and the unexpected.

Besides the acknowledged staples by the Beatles and Varèse, the 23-piece ensemble tackles more recent work by Wolfgang Rihm, Charles Wuorinen, AWS pianist John Orfe, and Augusta Read Thomas (whose Final Soliloquy of the Interior Paramour features guest vocal performances by Kirsten Sollek and Caleb Burhans). As the Chicago Reader noted ahead of a 2014 performance, Alarm Will Sound “hasn’t just blurred the lines between neoclassical polyphony and contemporary pop; it’s obliterated them.” The Modernists recording, in all its otherworldly and unwieldy glory, only adds to the mystique.
